Premise decomposition: Naur's rule-inexpressibility argument does not by itself bind program theory to humans

Premises and counterexamples

  1. Naur's statement that program theory is “inextricably bound to human beings” asserts species exclusivity, rather than only the narrower claim that an unexpressed theory remains embodied in the programmer team that possesses it. — DOUBTFUL — Section 6 immediately cashes out the binding claim through program life, death, and revival: a program lives while a programmer team possessing its theory remains in control, dies when that team dissolves, and revives when another programmer team rebuilds the theory. That concrete use establishes dependence on embodied possessors but does not test a nonhuman possessor, so it leaves room for “human beings” to name the available possessors in Naur's setting rather than a defended taxonomic boundary. The phrase itself still supports the note's stronger reading, so the contextual instance dents but does not defeat the premise. — GLOBAL — instance
  2. Rule-inexpressibility and human exclusivity classify different things: the former constrains how a capacity can be represented or determined, while the latter constrains what kinds of bearer can exercise it. — HOLDS — A countermodel can contain a nonhuman biological programmer that maps a program to the world, justifies its parts, and extends it through similarity judgments that remain inexpressible as complete rules. Nothing in rule-inexpressibility alone makes that situation contradictory; attempts to rule it out had to add a fact about the bearer's species, mentality, or mode of operation.
  3. The capabilities used to identify possession of a program theory—world/program mapping, justification, and coherent modification—do not themselves stipulate human species membership. — HOLDS — The active hunt considered Naur's repeated language of persons, programmers, and mental possession. A nonhuman person or mind can still satisfy those descriptions without contradiction; stipulating that “person,” “mind,” or “programmer” means human would itself supply the human-exclusive boundary whose independent status the note identifies.
  4. Neither the regress against rule-complete intelligence nor the conclusion that similarity criteria cannot be formulated entails that every eligible nonhuman is a rule-follower. — HOLDS — The regress applies to an account of intelligence by further rules, not to a taxonomy of all possible agents. Naur's contrast between human judgment and machine execution can exclude machines only after adding that the machine's relevant operation is exhausted by rules, and it cannot exclude a nonhuman biological or otherwise non-machine agent without another classification premise.
  5. Establishing human exclusivity requires the supporting argument, whether through one premise or several jointly, to exclude every eligible nonhuman bearer rather than only designer-written rule lists or currently formalized machines. — HOLDS — Excluding a finite rule table leaves learned systems, nonhuman organisms, and other possible bearers untouched; excluding formal machines still leaves non-machine nonhumans. Every attempted counterexample to this requirement succeeded only by narrowing the eligible domain or adding a premise that all remaining nonhumans fall into an excluded class.
  6. The compiler-transfer case does not itself provide the exhaustive nonhuman exclusion missing from the rule-inexpressibility argument. — HOLDS — The case concerns one motivated human successor group given one artifact and support package. It can show that this package did not convey enough program-specific understanding to that group, but a single human-to-human transfer failure supplies no instance involving a nonhuman interpreter and no universal result about all rationale packages or acquisition routes.

For the human

Look first at premise 1: decide whether Naur's “human beings” is meant as a defended species boundary or as the essay's name for embodied programmer-theory possessors, because the latter reading would require rescoping the note's Naur-specific central commitment.
