Critique: Irreducibility to rules bounds text alone, not text plus an interpreter

Strongest case against it
A Naurian theory-building opponent would say that “text alone” is not the alternative Naur rejects. Text never interprets or decides; the live question is whether code, specifications, and documentation let a new interpreter acquire the program-specific theory. Naur's transfer case already includes world-knowing human interpreters: successor programmers can read the artifacts, yet on his account they still lack the situated ability to map this program to its world, justify its particular design, and perceive which similarities govern a novel modification. Guided work with an existing theory-holder is his proposed transfer route. The relevant candidate set in 1985 was therefore not empty. What was missing was not an interpreter in general but an interpreter already possessing, or able to acquire, this program's theory.
That produces a dilemma for the proposed composite. If the LLM's general world knowledge plus retained premises does not supply the project-specific similarity dispositions, then adding it to the text has not escaped Naur's objection; it recreates the successor-programmer case. If it does supply those dispositions, then the interpreter is already the theory-holder in Naur's functional sense. Calling the result a property of the “text-plus-interpreter” composite changes the system boundary but does not show that retained text carries or transfers the irreducible part. The note assumes the decisive competence in its phrase “a separate interpreter, competent over the relevant world” and then uses that assumed competence to conclude that the composite can have it.
The same problem appears at the word “rules.” A fixed LLM and its inference procedure are themselves a finite machine-realized mechanism. The note does not say whether Naur's “limited set of criteria or rules” means only an explicit domain checklist or every finite computational decision process. On the broader reading, the irreducibility objection reaches text plus LLM as one rule-governed artifact. On the narrower reading, modern statistical interpretation may evade an explicit checklist, but that narrower meaning has to be argued rather than obtained by relabeling one part of the mechanism an interpreter.
The attack does not defeat the note's narrow modal point: Naur's quoted requirement selects a bearer with the relevant understanding and does not, by itself, prove that such a bearer must be biologically human. It does defeat the stronger claim that the irreducibility argument therefore bounds only text alone or that adding a generic semantic interpreter clears Naur's transfer objection. That conclusion still needs an account of how the interpreter acquires the program-specific theory without presupposing the capacity at issue.
How the note engages it
Partially engaged. The two failure modes concede that an LLM may lack organizational, embodied, and participation-acquired facts and may fail dispositional continuity. The Scope section also labels the composite claim a conjecture rather than a finding, and the Open Questions ask whether participation-acquired facts are unwritable and how to distinguish coherent extension from plausible post-hoc justification. Those qualifications correctly prevent the note from claiming that a current system has already demonstrated program theory.
They do not answer the conceptual and historical objection. The note still says the 1985 candidate set was empty by restricting candidates to non-human interpreters “inside a software system,” although Naur's transfer problem already concerns artifacts consumed by fresh human interpreters. It also does not distinguish general semantic competence from possession of the program-specific theory, identify a non-circular acquisition route, or explain why moving the interpreter across the technical-system boundary changes what the irreducibility claim reaches. The conjecture label records the missing evidence but does not repair the inference used to clear the classical objection.
Constructive findings
- Reframe the issue as artifact-mediated transfer from an incumbent theory-holder to a fresh interpreter, not literal text-as-decider versus text-plus-interpreter. State what an LLM contributes that a successor human reader of code and documentation did not.
- Separate general world knowledge, retained project premises, and the program-specific disposition to extend the design coherently. Give independent success conditions for the third so that “competent over the relevant world” does not assume the conclusion.
- Replace or qualify the empty-1985-candidate-set claim. The historically defensible claim is narrower: no non-human semantic interpreter could be placed inside the technical boundary, while human artifact readers were available but allegedly could not reconstruct the theory from artifacts alone.
- Define the intended scope of “criteria or rules.” If it excludes only explicit, enumerated decision criteria, explain why a learned interpreter is not such a reduction; if it includes finite machine procedures, acknowledge that text plus a fixed LLM remains within the target and that a stronger response is required.
- Promote the proposed cohort of novel modification demands from an open question into the condition that would make the substrate claim substantive: compare a fresh interpreter with and without retained rationale, using an oracle that scores coherent extension independently of the interpreter's own justifications.
Secondary objections (optional)
- The claim that justification is “largely premise-shaped” is too quick. Naur's capability is an open-ended ability to answer why each part is as it is; recording some reasons does not establish that a fresh interpreter can select, compose, and apply them under novel questioning.
- The contrast between resampled model judgment and a human theory-holder's continuity treats human continuity as a baseline without support. Human theory possession is also fallible and drifting; the relevant comparison needs an operational reliability threshold for both substrates.
