Exact human inputs
After the source was ingested, the human wrote:
I am wondering about the author stance that theories with explanatory reach need mathematical representation
They then supplied the counterexample:
For example kb/notes/agent-context-is-constrained-by-soft-degradation-not-hard-token-limits.md I think contains a theory with explanatory reach despite having no math notation. A strict formulation would probably require lots of variables.
They challenged the confidence and transfer scope:
I think there is something interesting in this - for example you are probably right that this will be probably model and task specific - so how can we state it so confidently? There will be many exceptions.
They commissioned the durable artifact and set its quality bar:
OK - I think this is worth a note. But I am not sure about the title - 'you can have explanatory reach in theories formulated in natural language' - this would be too trivial. The note should state that and also establish the epistemologic validity of such theories - the boundaries. I think this is very important - because this is the main work in this KB.
The current workshop was commissioned with:

At workshop creation, the content following the snapshot's two-line provenance preamble was verified byte-for-byte against the then-live 71-line note. After the later restructuring, the live note contained 43 lines and differed from the frozen copy. The preserved original content has SHA-256 16651a290489c95a3e720441dd96d5f4193aa3ce988c47ccd57855ef85644b80; the restructured live note observed on 2026-08-18 had SHA-256 2eec9489340a5bcc68135b1124eaddb9da08a08b881b690dcd8d15bd7f8c71b2.
Agent interpretive pivots
The following substantive moves were made in agent responses before the writing workflow. They are normalized summaries of the session, not verbatim quotations:
- Defazio's operative contrast was reconstructed as predictive constraint versus post-hoc accommodation, not mathematical notation versus natural language. His rejection of fragile scaling-law fits also made mathematics insufficient by itself.
- The discussion separated three axes that had been conflated: explanatory-reach, representational form, and predictive precision.
- The soft-degradation note was treated as a qualitative theory because it proposes a mechanism, counterfactual consequences, transfer conditions, and a falsifier without assigning a strict quantitative surface.
- The user's exceptions objection exposed an overclaim in that note: a hard admission boundary and a task-dependent reliability boundary should be represented separately, with whichever is encountered first constraining a particular task.
- Formalization was narrowed from a universal condition of theory to a requirement for operations or guarantees that depend on assigned symbolic consequences. Exact quantitative claims still require quantitative support, but not necessarily symbolic notation in their statement.
Multistage commission
The writing workflow used this governing question:
On what epistemic basis can a theory formulated in natural language have explanatory-reach, and what bounds the warrant carried by that theory?
The commission preserved four exclusions inferred from the human request and preceding exchange:
- It would not claim that every natural-language theory is warranted.
- It would not treat semantic criticism by humans or language models as mechanically reliable.
- It would not claim that formalization is unnecessary.
- It would not let qualitative theories inherit exact quantitative predictions without further evidence or representation.
The initial provisional title was Natural-language theories earn explanatory-reach claim by claim. An agent audit later identified that title as a category error: explanatory-reach is a property of an account, while warrant is what can be earned for a claim and scope. The accepted title became Natural-language theories carry warrant claim by claim and scope by scope.
Agent-generated theory structure
The reconstruction and drafting stages introduced the following structure, now visible in the frozen note:
- Natural language can expose criticizable dependencies and therefore make an account a candidate bearer of explanatory-reach, but form alone does not establish truth or scope.
- Assessment has a structural threshold (dependencies and possible failure are exposed) and an epistemic threshold (evidence, proof, or justified transfer supports reliance over a scope).
- Warrant is local to a claim and supported domain; a claim–scope pair is bookkeeping that prevents support from spreading silently across a document.
- Support may arrive through derivation, constrained inheritance, discriminating tests, interventions, held-out comparisons, risky predictions, or a justified relation between observed and unobserved classes.
- Interpretation is a form-specific boundary. Formalization moves some judgment into assigned consequences and mechanical checks, while leaving the translation and model–world bridge open to criticism.
- The soft-degradation note is a mixed-warrant case: it crosses the structural threshold while its mechanism and transfer scope remain unevenly supported.
- The reliability of human or language-model reach-assessment remains an explicit unresolved gap.
These are the clearest evidence that agents did more than phrase a human-supplied thesis. The two-threshold structure, claim–scope bookkeeping, and translation-boundary account organize the retained argument and were not stated in the human prompts.
Agent audit and corrections
The audit stage materially changed the draft. Its main findings were:
- The original title conflated explanatory-reach with earned warrant.
- Reach needed to be described as graded and potentially narrow.
- “Interpretation is the natural-language boundary” was too exclusive; interpretation is a form-specific boundary.
- Causal and invariance checks should not be presented as having the exhaustive force of proof or model checking.
- Exact numerical consequences do not by themselves require formalization; the trigger is an operation or guarantee that depends on assigned symbolic consequences.
- “Warranted bridge” was circular. The text needed discriminating source tests and preservation of the constraints that made the source claim work.
- Claim–scope pairs are bookkeeping, not a new ontology or a redefinition of explanatory-reach.
- Transfer from finite evidence to an unobserved class needed an explicit, domain-dependent bridge rather than case count or surface variety alone.
The final acceptance stage returned PASS with no blocking findings after these corrections were integrated.
Retained outputs and checks
The episode produced:
- the source snapshot and ingest report copied in this directory;
- the note frozen here as
natural-language-theories-carry-warrant-claim-by-claim.snapshot.md; - one discovery-index entry because the discovery tag index declares complete coverage;
- clean deterministic validation for the target note and the affected learning-theory and discovery navigation artifacts.
No human review of the final wording is recorded before this workshop. The workflow's agent acceptance verdict is evidence of an internal check, not a substitute for human acceptance or evidence that the theory is true.
