Evidence packet — RUN AGS-20260821-sequentialthinking

Logical records 1–4 of the result. Frozen at step 2; canonical records finalized after step 4. Lens workers consume this file plus read-only access to the frozen boundary. No lens may reacquire, refresh, or widen sources, or mint a canonical ID.

2. System boundary, revision, and overall evidence tier

Subject and scope route

Subject: the sequentialthinking MCP server — subtree src/sequentialthinking of github.com/modelcontextprotocol/servers, distributed as npm package @modelcontextprotocol/server-sequential-thinking.

Scope decision: in scope, via the narrower-system route of step 1.2, not via the named kinds. The server is not an agent runtime, harness, orchestration framework, or agent operating layer. It is deterministic machinery whose deployed behavior exists only in service of a model call that runs outside its own boundary: every input it processes is a tool call authored by a host LLM, and its sole output paths return material toward that model or toward a human log reader. Step 1.2 admits exactly this case ("deterministic machinery driven by a model that lives elsewhere").

Boundary declaration (by function)

Included — components whose scheduling, context selection, retained state, action execution, checking, acceptance, or authority decisions produce or constrain the behavior under review:

  • the server process entrypoint and its stdio transport binding (CMP-1);
  • the MCP Server instance and its declared capabilities (CMP-2);
  • the tool-listing handler that places the tool descriptor into the host's reach (CMP-3);
  • the call dispatch handler (CMP-4);
  • the SequentialThinkingServer singleton holding all retained state (CMP-5);
  • the validation gate (CMP-6);
  • the stderr renderer (CMP-7);
  • the thought-processing and response-construction facility (CMP-8);
  • the packaging/build facility that determines the deployed artifact (CMP-9);
  • the shipped tool descriptor prose and input schema (OBJ-1, OBJ-2), because they are the server's only context-selection surface toward the model.

Excluded — named, with the conclusions the exclusion prevents:

Excluded Prevents
The MCP host (Claude Desktop or other client) Any claim about how, when, or whether the tool descriptor reaches model context; any claim about host-side schema enforcement or retry
The host LLM that authors thought values and decides when to call Any claim about what reasoning actually occurs, whether hypotheses are generated or verified, or whether tool availability changes model behavior
@modelcontextprotocol/sdk 0.5.0 internals (SRC-6, not present in the checkout) Any claim about wire framing, request concurrency/ordering, error propagation, or schema pre-validation performed by the SDK before the handler runs
chalk 5.x None material — used only for stderr color
The remaining servers monorepo siblings None material — no cross-import exists from the target subtree

Boundary kind: whole-artifact for the distributed server; not whole-system for the "sequential thinking" reasoning loop, whose model and host halves are external dependencies above. Conclusions in this run are about the server as a deployed unit. No conclusion about the reasoning loop as a whole is licensed.

Checkout /home/zby/llm/servers (read-only inspection; not mutated, not fetched)
Revision 2ecb382a02d7921511180dfbadcef24eb66a052f
Commit date 2024-12-06T13:33:21+00:00
Working tree clean (git status --porcelain empty)
Subtree HEAD change 94a3628 typescript servers 0.6.2

Age limitation (published): the frozen revision predates the analysis cutoff by ~20 months. This is a stable but old boundary, permitted by step 2.2 with explicit limitation. It prevents any claim about the current upstream state of this server.

Overall evidence tier

code-grounded.

Justification: every material loop recorded in the step-4 runtime baseline (RTE-1RTE-13) rests on inspected implementation material — index.ts read in full, plus the manifest and build config. The uninspected SDK and the external host/model loop are declared external dependencies of the boundary; per step 3 they neither raise nor lower the tier, and their prevented conclusions are recorded above and in RESULT.md §10. One tier is reported; the mixed inspection gaps stay claim-local limitations.

3. Source register

ID Kind Identity / location Revision / capture Evidence layer Inspected scope Citation anchors Access gaps
SRC-1 file in checkout src/sequentialthinking/index.ts 2ecb382 implementation full file, 278 lines line numbers none
SRC-1a region of SRC-1 index.ts:135-188 — tool description string 2ecb382 implementation (as shipped text) / doctrine/design (as to its content about model behavior) full string line numbers its assertions about model behavior are doctrine, not observed
SRC-2 file in checkout src/sequentialthinking/README.md 2ecb382 doctrine/design full file, 63 lines line numbers, headings none
SRC-3 file in checkout src/sequentialthinking/package.json 2ecb382 implementation (packaging/build config) full file keys none
SRC-4 file in checkout src/sequentialthinking/tsconfig.json + root tsconfig.json 2ecb382 implementation (build config) full files keys none
SRC-5 file in checkout repo-root package.json 2ecb382 implementation (workspace/packaging) workspaces, version, scripts only keys rest of monorepo not inspected (not material)
SRC-6 declared dependency @modelcontextprotocol/sdk 0.5.0 pinned exact in SRC-3 (none assigned — uninspected) none node_modules/ absent from the checkout; source never inspected. Prevents all claims about transport framing, dispatch ordering, and pre-handler validation
SRC-7 git metadata git log, git status, git ls-files over the subtree as of 2026-08-21 implementation (provenance) subtree history, 8 commits commit hashes none

Per step 2.3, SRC-1 carries different layers in different parts; SRC-1a records the region whose content is doctrine addressed to the model, rather than flattening the whole file to one layer.

4. Shared canonical records

Only the orchestrator allocates these IDs. Lenses extend by ID and propose new records under lens-local tags (MEM-n, EPI-n).

4a. Components CMP-*

ID Component Anchor Notes
CMP-1 runServer() + StdioServerTransport binding; fatal-error exit SRC-1:269-278 process entrypoint; bin target after build
CMP-2 MCP Server instance, declared name: "sequential-thinking-server", version: "0.2.0", capabilities: {tools:{}} SRC-1:237-247 declares tools capability only — no resources, prompts, sampling
CMP-3 ListToolsRequestSchema handler SRC-1:251-253 returns the single static descriptor
CMP-4 CallToolRequestSchema handler; tool-name equality dispatch SRC-1:255-267 single known name; all else → error payload
CMP-5 SequentialThinkingServer class, module-scope singleton thinkingServer SRC-1:25-131, 249 holds OBJ-4, OBJ-5; one instance per process
CMP-6 validateThoughtData SRC-1:29-56 envelope type/presence check; throws on failure
CMP-7 formatThought chalk box renderer SRC-1:58-84 human-facing only
CMP-8 processThought — orchestration, state writes, response build, error capture SRC-1:86-130 the whole material call path
CMP-9 packaging/build: tscdist/index.js, bin: mcp-server-sequential-thinking, files: ["dist"] SRC-3:10-20, SRC-4 determines the deployed artifact

4b. Operative objects OBJ-*

ID Object Form Substrate Anchor
OBJ-1 Tool description prose (54 lines: purpose, "When to use", "Key features", "Parameters explained", an 11-item "You should:" list) natural-language string literal in shipped JS SRC-1a:135-188
OBJ-2 Tool input JSON Schema (9 properties, 4 required, minimum bounds) symbolic object literal in shipped JS SRC-1:189-234
OBJ-3 Validated ThoughtData record (one per accepted call) structured record process memory, per call SRC-1:13-23, 45-55
OBJ-4 thoughtHistory: ThoughtData[] — append-only ordered array structured record array process heap SRC-1:26, 94
OBJ-5 branches: Record<string, ThoughtData[]> — keyed buckets keyed structured records process heap SRC-1:27, 96-101
OBJ-6 Success response payload: {thoughtNumber, totalThoughts, nextThoughtNeeded, branches: string[], thoughtHistoryLength}, JSON-serialized into one text content block structured record → natural-language-channel text MCP response over stdio SRC-1:106-117
OBJ-7 Error response payload: {error, status:'failed'} with isError: true structured record → text block MCP response over stdio SRC-1:118-129
OBJ-8 Rendered thought box (chalk-colored, unicode-boxed, includes full thought text) natural-language display process stderr SRC-1:58-84, 104
OBJ-9 README doctrine text (Features, Tool, Usage, Configuration) natural-language repo file SRC-2
OBJ-10 Distribution manifest / package identity (version: 0.6.2, deps, bin) symbolic config repo file SRC-3

OBJ-1 and OBJ-2 are split from the single SEQUENTIAL_THINKING_TOOL literal because they differ in representational form, consumer, and authority path (see BAP-1 vs BAP-4).

4c. Routes RTE-*

Runtime owns endpoints and progression; lenses annotate, never re-inventory.

ID Route Endpoints Anchor
RTE-1 process launch → stdio transport connect → ready log host process spawn → CMP-1/CMP-2 SRC-1:269-273
RTE-2 tools/list → static descriptor return host → CMP-3OBJ-1+OBJ-2 → host SRC-1:251-253
RTE-3 tools/call → name-equality dispatch → processThought host → CMP-4CMP-8 SRC-1:255-259
RTE-4 envelope validation gate (4 required fields, type checks) → OBJ-3 or thrown Error CMP-6 SRC-1:29-56, 88
RTE-5 totalThoughts monotone clamp: if (thoughtNumber > totalThoughts) totalThoughts = thoughtNumber CMP-8 on OBJ-3 SRC-1:90-92
RTE-6 history append (unconditional on every valid call) CMP-8OBJ-4 SRC-1:94
RTE-7 branch-bucket append, conditional on branchFromThought && branchId both truthy; lazy bucket creation CMP-8OBJ-5 SRC-1:96-101
RTE-8 format + console.error emit of the full thought text CMP-7OBJ-8 → stderr SRC-1:103-104
RTE-9 success response construction and return — the only route that reads accumulated state CMP-8 reads OBJ-4.length, Object.keys(OBJ-5)OBJ-6 → host SRC-1:106-117
RTE-10 thrown-error capture → OBJ-7 with isError: true; the offending call is not appended to OBJ-4 CMP-8 catch SRC-1:118-129
RTE-11 unknown tool name → OBJ-7-shaped plain-text error CMP-4 fallback SRC-1:260-266
RTE-12 fatal transport/connect error → stderr message → process.exit(1) CMP-1 SRC-1:275-278
RTE-13 build & distribution: tscdist/index.js → npm publish → host launches via npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-sequential-thinking CMP-9 → host config SRC-3:10-20, SRC-2:47-59

4d. Claims CLM-*

Orchestrator namespace; the epistemic lens owns truth, scope, and warrant fields.

ID Claim (verbatim or close) Source / anchor Voice
CLM-1 "Generates a solution hypothesis" SRC-1a:154 tool "Key features" list
CLM-2 "Verifies the hypothesis based on the Chain of Thought steps" SRC-1a:155 tool "Key features" list
CLM-3 "Provides a correct answer" / "Provide a single, ideally correct answer as the final output" SRC-1a:157, 187 "Key features" / "You should:"
CLM-4 "Generate and verify solution hypotheses" SRC-2:12 README Features — server's own voice
CLM-5 "Revise and refine thoughts as understanding deepens" / "You can question or revise previous thoughts" SRC-2:9, SRC-1a:150 README Features / tool features
CLM-6 "Branch into alternative paths of reasoning" SRC-2:10 README Features
CLM-7 "Tasks that need to maintain context over multiple steps" SRC-1a:145, SRC-2:38 "When to use" / Usage
CLM-8 "Situations where irrelevant information needs to be filtered out" SRC-1a:146, SRC-2:39 "When to use" / Usage
CLM-9 Tool is named sequential_thinking SRC-2:16 README Tool heading
CLM-10 "This tool helps analyze problems through a flexible thinking process that can adapt and evolve" SRC-1a:136-137 tool description opening

Voice ambiguity, recorded not resolved: CLM-1, CLM-2, CLM-3, CLM-5, CLM-10 sit inside a string addressed to the model in the second person. Whether they predicate of the server, of the model using the server, or of the pair is not settled by the text. CLM-4 and CLM-6 are in the README's system voice and do predicate of the tool. The epistemic lens must preserve this ambiguity rather than choose a reading.

4e. Evidenced absences ABS-*

Every record names its recorded search boundary and the conclusion it prevents. Common search boundary B0 = the four files of the subtree at 2ecb382, each read in full, plus targeted rg over the named symbols. Absences are not uninspected gaps.

ID Absence Recorded search boundary Conclusion prevented
ABS-1 No configuration or environment surface of any kind B0 + rg 'process\.env\|argv\|yargs\|config\|DISABLE\|getenv' — only hits are the README's mention of claude_desktop_config.json and an unused yargs dependency in SRC-3:24 never imported by SRC-1 Prevents any claim that logging, persistence, verbosity, or validation is operator-tunable at this revision
ABS-2 No persistence, filesystem, network, or subprocess access B0 + rg 'fs\.\|writeFile\|readFile\|fetch\|http\|child_process\|spawn\|exec' over SRC-1 — zero matches; the only imports are the SDK, its types, and chalk Prevents any claim of cross-session, cross-process, or durable thought retention
ABS-3 Stored thought content is never read back. OBJ-4 and OBJ-5 are read at exactly two sites, SRC-1:113-114, as Object.keys() and .length B0 + rg 'thoughtHistory\|branches' — 8 hits total, all enumerated in RTE-6/RTE-7/RTE-9 Prevents any claim that the server retrieves, returns, summarizes, re-serves, or reasons over prior thoughts
ABS-4 needsMoreThoughts has no consumer. Declared SRC-1:21, schema'd :228, copied into OBJ-3 at :54, documented :175 — never read anywhere B0 + rg 'needsMoreThoughts\|needs_more_thoughts' — 4 hits, all declarations Prevents any claim that needsMoreThoughts changes server behavior, state, output, or rendering
ABS-5 No evaluator, quality check, consistency check, or acceptance decision over thought content. RTE-4 checks presence and JS type of the envelope fields only B0; full read of CMP-6 and CMP-8 Prevents any claim that the server verifies, validates, scores, or accepts the substance of a thought — bears directly on CLM-2, CLM-4
ABS-6 No linkage from a revision to the thought it revises. revisesThought is stored and rendered into OBJ-8 but no state operation connects, supersedes, marks, or removes the target entry; the revising thought is appended like any other B0; full read of RTE-5RTE-9 Prevents any claim that the server maintains a revision graph, supersession, or corrected history — bears on CLM-5
ABS-7 No scheduling, iteration control, or termination decision. nextThoughtNeeded is copied from input (SRC-1:49) to output (SRC-1:111) unchanged; nothing branches on it B0; full read of CMP-8 Prevents any claim that the server drives, paces, continues, or terminates the thinking loop
ABS-8 No tests, fixtures, traces, logs, or run artifacts anywhere in the boundary git ls-files src/sequentialthinking → exactly 4 files; directory listing including dotfiles → same 4 Prevents every observed or causally supported status in this run; caps all findings at implemented or claimed
ABS-9 No filtering, ranking, selection, or relevance operation over any input B0; full read of CMP-8 — every valid call is appended unconditionally at SRC-1:94 Prevents any claim that the server filters irrelevant information — bears on CLM-8
ABS-10 No resources, prompts, or sampling capability declared; capabilities: {tools:{}} only SRC-1:242-246 Prevents any claim of server-initiated model calls, resource serving, or prompt provision

4f. Behavioral-authority paths BAP-*

Four parts each: consumer, channel, force, horizon. Epistemic and operational authority remain lens-owned and are recorded separately by the epistemic lens.

ID Consumer Channel Force Horizon Evidence
BAP-1 host LLM RTE-2 tools/list response → OBJ-1 prose placed into model context by the host advisory instruction — a "When to use this tool" list and an 11-item imperative "You should:" list as long as the host keeps the descriptor in context (host-determined; outside boundary) SRC-1a:135-188; delivery step uninspected — the server affords, the host disposes
BAP-2 host LLM RTE-9 response text block returned into the conversation informational feedback only — echoed counters, branch keys, history length; obliges nothing one turn, unless the host retains it SRC-1:106-117
BAP-3 human operator / log reader RTE-8 process stderr display only; no binding force on any consumer inside the boundary process lifetime / whatever the host does with stderr SRC-1:104, 272
BAP-4 the calling host/model at call time OBJ-2 schema advertised via RTE-2, plus the server's own independent re-validation RTE-4 enforcing — a call missing any of the 4 required fields, or with a wrong JS type, is rejected with isError: true and is not recorded every call, for the process lifetime SRC-1:189-234, 29-56, 118-129
BAP-5 human operator configuring a host SRC-2:41-59 README config snippet advisory setup instruction until the operator's config changes SRC-2:47-59

BAP-4 is the only path with enforcing force anywhere in the boundary, and what it enforces is envelope shape, not content.
