2. Boundary, revision, and evidence tier

Scope route. In scope via step 1.2's narrower-system route, not via the named kinds. The server is not a runtime, harness, orchestration framework, or agent operating layer. It is deterministic machinery whose deployed behavior exists only in service of a model call that runs on the other side of its transport: every input it processes is a tool call authored by a host LLM, and every output path returns material toward that model or toward a human log reader.

Boundary, by function. Included: CMP-1CMP-9 — the process entrypoint and stdio binding, the MCP Server and its declared capabilities, the tool-listing handler, the call dispatcher, the SequentialThinkingServer singleton holding all retained state, the validation gate, the stderr renderer, the thought-processing and response-construction facility, and the packaging/build facility — plus OBJ-1/OBJ-2, the shipped tool descriptor and input schema, as the server's only outbound context-selection surface.

Excluded, each with the conclusion it prevents: the MCP host (prevents any claim about whether the descriptor reaches model context, or about host-side schema enforcement, retry, or stderr handling); the host LLM that authors thought values (prevents any claim about what reasoning occurs, whether hypotheses are generated or verified, or whether tool availability changes behavior); @modelcontextprotocol/sdk 0.5.0, SRC-6, absent from the checkout (prevents any claim about wire framing, dispatch ordering, concurrency, or pre-handler validation); chalk and the remaining monorepo siblings (no material prevention).

Boundary kind. Whole-artifact for the distributed server. Not whole-system for the "sequential thinking" reasoning loop, two-thirds of which — host and model — is a declared external dependency. No conclusion in this run is licensed about that loop as a whole.

Revision. 2ecb382a02d7921511180dfbadcef24eb66a052f, commit date 2024-12-06, working tree clean, inspected read-only and never mutated. Subtree HEAD change: 94a3628 typescript servers 0.6.2.

Overall evidence tier: code-grounded. One tier, reported once. Every material loop in the step-4 baseline rests on inspected implementation material: index.ts read in full, plus the manifest, both tsconfigs, and git provenance. The uninspected SDK and the external host/model loop are declared external dependencies; per step 3 they neither raise nor lower the tier, and their prevented conclusions are in §10. Mixed inspection gaps remain claim-local limitations and did not change the tier silently.

Read the tier against §10 before relying on it. code-grounded here means the routes were read in source. It does not mean the thinking was observed — nothing in this run reaches observed or causally supported, because ABS-8 records that the boundary contains four files and no test, fixture, trace, or log.


9. Bounded synthesis

Organized around the deployed system's progression. No system-wide epistemic grade is assigned, and capability-versus-deployment and evidence-layer limits are preserved inline.

Scheduling — the responsibility is absent from the boundary

The server named for a sequential process implements no sequence control. ABS-7 records the search: nextThoughtNeeded is copied from input at index.ts:49 to output at :111 and is never branched on anywhere. Nothing decides whether another thought follows, paces the loop, or terminates it. After await server.connect(transport) the process is a passive responder; the next-step owner on every route is the host and model, unconditionally. The one place a scheduling-adjacent decision could live — the totalThoughts clamp at :90-92 — changes a stored number, not any control flow.

This is the run's clearest instance of the anti-conflation rules. A store that grows with use is not a scheduler, and a tool descriptor telling a model to keep thinking is not the server making the loop continue.

Context assembly — two fixed payloads, no selection

The server contributes to model context twice and selects nothing on either route.

RTE-2 returns one static descriptor — 54 lines of imperative natural language (OBJ-1) plus a 9-property JSON Schema (OBJ-2) — byte-identical on every call, ignoring its request argument and never consulting accumulated state. The memory lens's load-bearing negative: there is no adaptive description, no learned schema, no history-conditioned instruction. The system's one instruction-force channel toward the model (BAP-1) is fixed at build time.

RTE-9 returns a five-field payload. Selection is degenerate — constant shape, aggregate values, no query parameter, filter, or state argument anywhere in OBJ-2. The agent cannot ask for state, cannot ask for more, and cannot ask for less.

On both routes the delivery step — whether and how the host places the material into model context — is host-owned and uninspected. The server affords; the host disposes.

State and action — total retention, no external effect

Every admitted call is appended to OBJ-4 unconditionally (index.ts:94), append-only, unbounded, with no eviction, TTL, compaction, or session key. Branch-labelled calls are additionally filed into OBJ-5 by caller-supplied key — by reference, so OBJ-5 is an index over OBJ-4 rather than a copy (A7). The store is a module-scope singleton (:249) with no request partition, so if a host multiplexes conversations onto one process they interleave in one array with no separator; the code affords this and nothing prevents it, but whether hosts do it is outside the boundary.

Action is confined to the process's own two output streams. ABS-2 records the search: no filesystem, network, or subprocess call exists. ABS-1 records that no configuration or environment surface exists at all — nothing here is operator-tunable, including the unconditional stderr write.

Recovery is thin and now correctly scoped (A10): a validation throw fires before the append, so a rejected call leaves the store clean; but the append at :94 precedes the render at :103-104, so a throw from rendering or response construction is caught after the record was already retained, and the caller receives isError: true for a call that was stored. A fatal transport error is process.exit(1) with no retry, backoff, or graceful shutdown.

Memory return — retention is total, retrieval of content is nil

Read-back exists and is degenerate. Under the definition applied as given, the derived return at index.ts:113-114 counts: thoughtHistoryLength (OBJ-11) and the branch-key set (OBJ-12) are functions of state accumulated across prior invocations and are returned into a later one. Three precisions bound it:

  • It never arrives alone. The write at :94 precedes the read, so the returned count is (accepted calls before this one) + 1, and a newly created branch key appears in the very response that created it.
  • Its warrant scope is the process, not the conversation (A4). A consumer reading thoughtHistoryLength as "my conversation's thought count" exceeds what the derivation licenses.
  • It carries no thought text, no per-entry addressing, no ordering, and no branch membership — only which keys exist, never which thoughts are in them.

Three fields of the response payload are echo, not read-back: thoughtNumber, totalThoughts, and nextThoughtNeeded are read off the current record at :110-112, never off the store. And totalThoughts may have been silently rewritten in place before both storage and echo, with no field distinguishing an echoed value from a rewritten one (A3).

The one exception to the content blackout is OBJ-12: branch labels are caller-authored strings that do come back. ABS-3 is correct as written and is scoped to thought content (A13).

Against that, the system's richest content channel points away from the agent that produced the material. RTE-8 writes the full thought text, chalk-coloured and boxed, to stderr on every valid call. It is the only route by which thought content leaves the process, its consumer is a human, it has no consumer inside the boundary at all, and it never reads the store either — formatThought renders the current record only.

The functional shape, stated as a bounded characterization rather than a verdict: inside this boundary the store behaves as a write-only ledger that returns a receipt. In the ordinary single-conversation case the model authored everything in it, so the projection is largely redundant with the model's own context.

Presence, wiring, activation, and causal effect were kept as four separate findings. Presence is implemented on the wire only; wiring is implemented in the inspected artifact but not established for any deployment, because the documented launch is an unpinned npx -y; activation is uninspected, not absent; causal effect is uninspected. Nothing was upgraded across those four.

Truth-apt and warrant routes — what the routes actually do

The thought field carries truth-apt natural language whose documented content classes include hypothesis generation and hypothesis verification. Inside the boundary it is acquired, not produced: RTE-4 (c) imports it from the excluded host LLM through a lossy 9-field whitelist projection, and source warrant is unknown — nothing records, requests, transmits, or assesses it, and no instance exists to inspect. Warrant is neither preserved nor degraded, because none was ever attached.

There is exactly one check in the boundary and its target is the envelope, not the content. RTE-4 (a) tests presence, truthiness, and JS type on four fields (A8); the five optional fields are cast, not checked, so any type enters storage and rendering. What that check licenses is exactly: at call time these four fields were present with these types. It licenses nothing about a thought's truth, quality, relevance, or consistency with anything earlier. The disposition it feeds (RTE-4 (b)) is envelope admission, not acceptance — retention follows admission with no acceptance step in between, and retention is not acceptance.

Exactly one route produces warranted derived content: RTE-9 (a), computing the count and key set from the store's own directly-inspectable state. The derivation is formally valid and its premises are warranted, within the domain of this process's own bookkeeping and nowhere else.

Two content edges are less clean. RTE-5's totalThoughts rewrite is indeterminate between entailed bound-repair and ampliative re-estimation, and the boundary contains no comment, spec, or test that decides it. And RTE-10 (b)'s rejection message is a valid derivation whose encoding into natural language is unfaithful for a reachable input class (A1): "" and 0 are rejected with "must be a string" / "must be a number", assertions that are false because the supplied types were correct. Formal validity holds; encoding fidelity does not.

Nothing conjectures — no sampling capability is declared, so the server cannot invoke a model at all. Nothing tests content. Nothing accepts. Nothing integrates: ABS-6 records that a revision is labelled and stored but no state operation links it to its target, supersedes, marks, or reorganizes anything, and there is no acceptance for integration to follow.

Against the claims. CLM-1CLM-4 — hypothesis generation, hypothesis verification, a correct answer — have no implemented route within the search boundary, no observed-run support, and no causal support. CLM-4 is the sharpest because it is in the README's own system voice with no ambiguity to absorb it, and CLM-2 is doubly foreclosed: the evaluator is absent (ABS-5) and the "Chain of Thought steps" such a verification would consume are retained but never read (ABS-3). CLM-5, CLM-6, and CLM-7 are partially implemented — as annotation-and-display, as keyed grouping with key reporting, and as retention without retrieval. CLM-8 has no route. CLM-11 is partly contradicted: the documentation says totalThoughts can be adjusted up or down, and RTE-5 silently overrides downward adjustment.

The voice ambiguity is preserved, not resolved (C1): the second-person framing of several claims does not rescue them. On the server-predicating reading the routes are absent; on the model-predicating reading the referent is declared external and cannot be assessed from here. CLM-5's README anchor, however, was resolved — into system voice (A9), which strengthens rather than weakens the mismatch.

CLM-9 is the one claim the boundary decides outright, and it decides against the doctrine: the README names the tool sequential_thinking, the code registers and dispatches sequentialthinking, so a caller following the README lands in the "Unknown tool" path.

Governing controls — almost no attachment surface

One authority path in the whole boundary carries enforcing force (BAP-4), and what it enforces is envelope shape. BAP-1 is advisory with a host-determined horizon and an uninspected delivery step; BAP-2 is informational and obliges nothing; BAP-3 and BAP-5 have no consumer inside the boundary at all. There is no permission, auth, rate-limit, quota, or gating mechanism, and no configuration surface to attach one to. Publishing a claim is not warrant for it, and the build step checks types, not claims.

The doctrine/implementation seam

Five independently anchored divergences cluster at the same seam and are preserved as conflicts rather than merged: the tool name (C2, decided false), the advertised minimum: 1 bounds that the validator never re-checks (C3, unresolvable from inside the boundary because the SDK is uninspected), the MCP-reported version against the package version (C4), the render label against the bucket state (C5), and the four unimplemented knowledge-production claims. Two further facts bound who ever sees the doctrine: the README is not shipped in the npm package (A12), and the descriptor that is shipped is the one carrying the knowledge-production claims.

The bounded reading: at this revision the doctrine layer and the implementation layer were not reconciled. That is a statement about these anchored pairs, not a grade.

Scope discipline

The server is deterministic machinery in service of a model on the other side of the transport. An intentionally operational or scaffolding scope is a scope boundary, not a product failure, and none of the absences above is offered as one. What they establish is narrower and is what the analysis question asked: on the routes inspected, at this revision, within the recorded search boundary, the knowledge-production work the descriptor and README describe is performed by no route inside this boundary. Whether it is performed by the excluded model or host is undetermined here and cannot be settled from inside this boundary. No absence in this run is expanded into a claim that no informal or unobserved route exists anywhere.
