reflection

Type: types/tag-readme.md

Notes on reflective systems: systems that read and change their own organization through a representation of themselves. The defining note is Reflective system. A self-improving pathway is reflective when it routes objective-bearing evidence into a change to the system's behavior-determining organization through a causally connected self-representation, and later operation depends on that change. The tag gathers what reflection buys (addressable, selectively revisable retention), how far its coverage reaches, and how it fails. It is a child of self-improving-systems. Boundary: a system can improve without reflection, as parametric learners do; which retention mechanisms keep a deployed system learning belongs to continual-learning, and reflection is the narrower question of whether the changed object is represented and addressable.

Evidence from Commonplace

  • self-improving-systems — the parent; reflection is one property a self-improving pathway may have
  • continual-learning — the retention mechanisms of a deployed learner; reflection asks whether what they change is represented and addressable
  • warranted-autonomy — which reflective revisions a computational actor may make without a human deciding
  • improvement-loop — the loop structure through which reflective revision is carried out
  • theory-builder — a reflective theory builder applies criticism to its own method texts
  • software-factory — where reflection targets reusable production machinery
