Summary
Graham argues that putting an idea into words reveals precision and completeness failures that remain hidden in thought. He separates two pressures: choosing an exact sequence of words commits the idea to one formulation, while rereading from the stance of a neutral stranger tests whether the page alone is correct and complete. Repeated cycles generate qualifications and previously unconscious ideas, and discard claims that cannot be repaired. Writing is stricter than conversation because less can be carried by tone and revision can continue far longer, but Graham also says the operative verbal work can happen mentally or in speech. He concludes that verbal formulation is necessary, though not sufficient, for fully formed nontrivial ideas.

Its account of exact wording exposing incompleteness bears on the human stall that LLM generation may hide, while its imagined neutral stranger is a human comparator for the adversarial human-agent loop. Exact-word commitment also resembles constraining, though Graham distinguishes that commitment from the later act of testing the result. Borretti and Grunewald extend the account into critiques of AI delegation; Karlsson adds conjectures, premises, and counterexamples; Karnofsky adds hypothesis-guided inquiry. Those are functional comparisons, not evidence that an automated KB learns like a human: human analogies can motivate functions without determining component boundaries.

Limitations (our opinion)
This is editorial opinion. The essay generalizes from Graham's own practice without comparisons against outlining, discussion, formal proof, building, or other ways of testing ideas. “Fully formed” is not operationalized, so the claim that verbal formulation is necessary for every nontrivial idea is difficult to falsify. The essay also bundles several possible causes -- exact wording, durable inscription, explaining to another, rereading, elapsed time, and repeated revision -- then partly unbundles them by allowing mental writing and conversation. That admission makes the functional decomposition valuable but weakens any medium-specific conclusion.
The neutral stranger is still the author. Shared assumptions, missing evidence, and errors outside the author's competence can survive repeated self-review, so correctness and completeness cannot be inferred from the essay passing that internal reader. Most importantly for Commonplace, changed human understanding, changed text, and durable change in agent behavior are different outcomes. An agent-operated analogue must separately establish retention, later activation, and behavioral effect; resemblance to Graham's human process does not supply those links.
