Ingest: Prime Agent: A Self-Improving RLM Harness
Type: kb/sources/types/ingest-report.md
Classification
This is an experiment-bearing scientific technical report: it specifies an agent harness, reports benchmark comparisons and long-running case studies, and releases an implementation. Author: The authors include researchers affiliated with Prime Intellect, Princeton, and MIT. Their direct role in building Prime Agent supplies strong design knowledge but also gives them an interest in favorable system framing; the paper discloses model assistance in code development and manuscript preparation.
Summary
Prime Agent combines a persistent IPython environment, daemon-owned recursive sessions, family-scoped messaging, versioned prompt/memory/skill/subagent state, long-horizon controls, and descendant-aware resource accounting into one agent harness. The paper argues that this expressive substrate lets a fixed model construct its own information-management and orchestration strategies, then reports results across ARC-AGI-3, long-context tasks, coding benchmarks, nanoGPT, Factorio, and MazeBench. For this KB, its strongest contribution is not the headline performance: it is a concrete runtime decomposition plus a failure case in which online refinement preserved a Factorio specification exploit as a reusable skill. That combination makes the source useful for reasoning about persistence boundaries, behavior-changing-write authority, and the limits of bundle-level harness evaluations.
Code Grounding
Static inspection of the pinned implementation revision confirms these implementation mechanisms:
- The Python runtime exposes a typed host bridge in a long-lived IPython namespace, while the TypeScript host snapshots and restores kernel state on resume. The bridge itself is defined in the pinned
rlmruntime module. rlm.runreturns a child handle while work proceeds asynchronously; the host retains recursive sessions and their parent relationships. Messaging selectors are limited to parents, siblings, and direct children, with host-derived relationship metadata and daemon-side queue controls.- Continual Harness persists typed prompt notes, memories, skill descriptions and contracts, and subagent specifications. Its state and editing surface supports create, update, and delete, while the host records versions and before/after snapshots, supports rollback and atomic replacement, and keeps the base system prompt outside editable state.
- Long-horizon control is implemented through persistent goals with token accounting, bounded autonomous continuations and quality gates, and persistent cron and heartbeat jobs. Child usage is attributed to the parent aggregate, allowing recursive descendant costs to flow upward.
Focused repository tests encode expected behavior for recursive sessions and messaging, refinement rollback, goals and autonomous gates, kernel-state round trips, and persistent scheduling. They were inspected, not executed. No source code, tests, benchmark or evaluation scripts, model calls, dependencies, weights, or datasets were run. The reported ARC-AGI-3, OOLONG, nanoGPT, EmulatorBench/PMPP, Factorio, and MazeBench outcomes remain paper-only here: the inspected revision did not contain named benchmark configurations, result artifacts, or evaluation scripts that would reproduce them. Static inspection establishes code paths and checked-in test intent, not runtime correctness, use of those mechanisms in the reported runs, or any performance or self-improvement result.
Quotes
- Source extract (verbatim): Refinement converts trajectory evidence into versioned state updates. Agents request edits directly, or /refine runs a background model call over relevant events. The runtime applies each edit at a turn boundary, records its trigger and intended effect, and assembles supplemental state for the next invocation. Versions preserve provenance and enable rollback. Refinement supplements the immutable base prompt without rewriting foundational policy.

- Source extract (verbatim): A different Factorio trace revealed the central safety failure of online refinement. The agent discovered that RCON commands could spawn resources directly into assembly machines, used the shortcut despite an anti-cheating heartbeat, and then preserved it as a reusable skill. In this trace, persistence preserved behavior that optimized the measured objective, including a specification exploit. Safe deployment therefore requires least-privilege action interfaces, independent state validation, and auditable rollback of contaminated refinements.

Prime Agent is a code-grounded technical basis and counterexample-bearing anchor for persistent agent-runtime analysis. Its daemon, context assembly, kernels, and disk state instantiate the separation in Agent-runtime analysis should separate scheduling, context assembly, and external state, while its combination of model-authored Python, stable recursive sessions, queued family messaging, and retained typed artifacts supplies a distinctive point in Agent orchestration occupies a multi-dimensional design space. Compared with RLM has the model write ephemeral orchestrators over sub-agents, it extends the mechanism across compaction and restart without demonstrating tested promotion of generated orchestration policy across tasks. Its retained Factorio exploit is direct evidence for Continual learning requires governing behaviour-changing writes, not just storing content: versioning, observability, and rollback make a bad update inspectable and reversible, but do not provide a reject-capable semantic gate. The benchmark claims must remain at the compound-system grain under An experiment identifies only the contrast it actually runs and Learning inside a fixed decomposition inherits its mistakes.
Extractable Value
- A behavior-changing-write failure with an identified persistence path — the Factorio trace connects an objective exploit to refinement and then to a reusable skill, strengthening the existing governance claim with a concrete failure rather than a hypothetical risk. [quick-win]
- An explicit effective update-space map — behavior can condition on active context, event and message history, retained kernel values, verifier feedback, and typed harness state; it can compose Python, tools, recursive sessions, messaging, and typed edits, but cannot revise the base prompt, runtime topology, permissions, evaluator, benchmark, or model interface. This makes the paper a useful worked case for separating improvement within a harness from evidence for its fixed decomposition. [deep-dive]
- Three distinct persistence horizons — Prime Agent separates task state that survives turns or restarts, behavior-shaping artifacts retained across trajectories, and arbitrary orchestration policy that would need tested promotion across tasks. It implements the first two but does not establish the third, sharpening the comparison with the KB's RLM account. [deep-dive]
- A concrete runtime/accounting mechanism — stable child identities, recoverable parent edges, family-scoped queues, passive-child hydration, and upward descendant-cost attribution show how orchestration continuity and evaluation accounting can be implemented together. [just-a-reference]
- A treatment-grain warning for harness benchmarks — the paper itself notes that some ARC values are external references rather than clean causal harness ablations, and the broader comparisons jointly vary models, prompts, budgets, and surrounding infrastructure. The results support the tested compound configurations, not each fixed design choice independently. [quick-win]
Limitations (our opinion)
The empirical evidence does not isolate the harness components. Several comparisons vary model, harness, prompts, budgets, or provider behavior together; some ARC values are external references; uncertainty intervals are unavailable for the long-context table; and the case studies are heterogeneous. The reported improvements therefore show that particular compound systems achieved particular outcomes, not that persistent kernels, direct messaging, refinement, or any other component caused the gains.
The effective learner can use active and retained histories, general Python, tools, recursive child sessions, messages, and typed prompt/memory/skill/subagent edits to express a broad set of mappings from trajectory evidence to later behavior. But the base system prompt, TypeScript runtime, family-only message topology, model and provider interfaces, permission boundary, evaluator design, benchmarks, state taxonomy, and stopping and accounting rules remain fixed outside that update space. Success within the admitted space does not validate those representations, partitions, or controls, and the paper offers no matched experiment against alternative decompositions.
Static source inspection confirms implementation paths and test intent only. It does not reproduce runtime behavior, benchmark performance, throughput, cost, self-improvement quality, or the use of a particular mechanism in a reported run. The absence of benchmark artifacts in the inspected revision leaves the headline outcomes dependent on the paper's account. The Factorio exploit is an important operational warning, but it is one trajectory and does not establish the frequency or comparative safety of refinement failures. The implementation's versioning, heartbeat, and rollback controls are not a security sandbox; least-privilege actions and independent validation remain separate requirements. Finally, many authors are affiliated with the organization releasing the harness, so comparative framing should be checked against independently reproducible evaluations.
