Summary
Bainbridge argues that automating an industrial process expands rather than eliminates problems with the human operator, through a series of ironies. The operator is then asked to (a) take over manual control when something is already wrong, precisely when skills atrophied by disuse are least available; (b) monitor for rare abnormalities, which humans cannot sustain past about half an hour; and (c) monitor a computer installed because it outperforms the human, an "impossible task" since the human cannot check its decisions in real time. A closing irony: the most successful, rarely-failing automated systems need the greatest investment in operator training. Bainbridge closes by arguing the Fitts-list "assign each task to who does it best" approach is insufficient and that human–computer collaboration (covert aiding) should be developed instead. Limitations (our opinion)
This is our editorial judgment. As a 1983 human-factors paper the domain is industrial process control and flight decks, not LLM agents or knowledge work; the analogy to agent oversight is strong but is an analogy, and its transfer is asserted here, not tested by Bainbridge. What was not tested: the paper argues from cited studies and worked observation rather than a controlled experiment of its own, so its central claims (skill atrophy, the training-investment paradox) are argued and illustrated, not measured end-to-end within this source. Several supporting figures Bainbridge herself flags as hard to obtain — she notes that designer-error data is "reluctant to publish" and "difficult to interpret." The prescriptive half (covert collaboration, adaptive displays) is largely proposal and speculation about display technology that predates modern interfaces, so those design recommendations are dated even where the diagnostic ironies remain sharp. The ironies are hard to vary and have aged well; the solutions are the softer, more disposable part.
