Summary
The review searches 1,493 papers, selects 314 relevant papers, and finds only nine primary studies whose objective is to define self-adaptive systems formally. Nine primary studies are too few to establish that no useful definition exists outside the search boundary. The paper elicits requirements but does not validate a unified definition, so its result is a gap map and design constraint rather than a settled ontology. The corpus is software/systems engineering and may not transfer directly to organizational or biological notions of adaptation.

The domain-goal half was taken up and declined. Adopting domain goals versus adaptation goals as a second objective level was considered while drafting the cluster's objective vocabulary and rejected: adaptation goals are instrumental to the improvement objective rather than a second objective alongside it, so a parallel level would misdescribe the relation. The distinction the split was reaching for is kept in a different shape — a property pursued because it is held to serve the objective is a proximate target, and what makes it a target rather than a goal is that it is checked for achievement and not for warrant. Read Petrovska's adaptation goals as that level, one rung below the declared objective rather than beside it.
