Ingest: Simplicity, hidden in complexity
Type: kb/sources/types/ingest-report.md
Classification
The chapter links algorithmic information, MDL, physical coarse-graining, neural-network compression, grokking, double descent, and language-model interfaces through a broad simplicity narrative. Author: Richard Heimann synthesizes mathematical texts, experiments, and popular essays. The mathematical definitions and empirical claims require their primary sources; the claimed unity among them is the author's conceptual contribution.
Summary
The chapter argues that prediction and compression reveal latent structure. A coffee automaton separates monotonic microscopic entropy from non-monotonic apparent complexity measured after coarse-graining; Kolmogorov complexity and MDL formalize short descriptions; Hinton and van Camp regularize weights through description length; grokking appears as a transition from memorization to a compressible rule; and double descent suggests that overparameterized models may find simpler interpolating functions beyond a brittle threshold. It ends by reframing the “blurry JPEG of the web” from a defective archive into a lossy, generative interface. Across these cases, however, compression changes meaning—from objective, to proxy measurement, to explanatory metaphor, to product interface.

Connections Found
The source complements epiplexity and supports observer-relative information value, because visible structure depends on the coarse-graining, compressor, tolerance, tools, and task. It also illustrates proximate-target warrant: shorter descriptions may correlate with generalization without universally explaining it. The blurry-JPEG claim is bounded by parametric reproduction cannot replace an authoritative record, and the reflective cluster supplies the key contrast that compressed weights remain indirectly rather than reflectively addressable, as in reflection buys addressability.
Extractable Value
- Compression must be typed by role -- predictive loss, model-selection principle, post-hoc measurement, and consumer interface all use “compression” differently; evidence for one does not establish the others. [deep-dive]
- Measured complexity depends on a representation contract -- the coffee automaton's peak appears only after a chosen coarse-graining and practical compressor, making the observer/tool boundary part of the result. [quick-win]
- Function-space compression is more relevant than raw weight bytes -- treating nearly equivalent behaviors as the same can reveal simplification hidden by initialization noise and parameter symmetries. [just-a-reference]
- Low training loss does not imply learned structure -- random-label memorization separates interpolation from meaningful compression and warns against using fit as a learning oracle. [quick-win]
- Compression is not reflective addressability -- grokking can produce a simpler distributed rule without yielding a representation that later rounds can read, criticize, and selectively revise. This is the book's clearest boundary with the reflective-self-improvement cluster. [quick-win]
- Test whether a complexity proxy predicts held-out shifts -- compare candidate compression measures at matched accuracy against transfer, perturbation, and delayed-generalization outcomes rather than assuming MDL warrant. [experiment]
Limitations (our opinion)
The chapter's simplicity narrative is attractive but underdetermined. Coffee mixing, Kolmogorov complexity, Bayesian/MDL coding, weight regularization, grokking, double descent, and scaling can share a curve shape without sharing a causal mechanism. Practical compression estimates depend on representation, tolerance, compressor, and compute; true Kolmogorov complexity is uncomputable. The claim that larger models find simpler explanations is not established by capacity alone—optimizer bias, data, regularization, and evaluation define which interpolating solution appears. Finally, a model can be a useful interface while remaining an unreliable archive; the “blurry JPEG” rebuttal does not supply provenance, currentness, attribution, or contestability.
