Warranted reader update is the objective of substantive writing

A substantive text creates value by changing what its intended reader can reasonably understand, believe, infer, or do. This change is a reader update. A topic names the area in which an update might occur; an angle proposes the particular update around which the text will organize its evidence and reasoning. Because information value is observer-relative, the same text may update a novice and merely restate an expert's prior.
Interestingness is the size and relevance of this update, but it cannot be the objective by itself. A surprising falsehood is cheap to generate, while a familiar truth can be cheap to justify without changing the reader. A valuable contribution combines a nontrivial update with enough evidence and reasoning to warrant it. Warrant does not guarantee truth; it makes the proposed update answerable to something beyond its novelty.
A writing workflow searches for the update
The stages of a multistage writing workflow earn their cost by improving the expected warranted update of the retained result. A vague thought supplies a direction. Model weights supply candidate knowledge and interpretations. Search brings sources and existing notes into co-presence. Connection-finding proposes relations among them. Drafting organizes selected ingredients around an angle. Criticism rejects generic, irrelevant, or unsupported candidates. Grounding strengthens or narrows the warrant. Acceptance retains the selected result, and later rewriting reopens it when new evidence or connections make a better update possible.
The process therefore does not create value merely by accumulating inputs. Co-occurrence expands the space of possible contributions, but an angle selects what the ingredients mean together. Often the durable contribution is this selected relation rather than knowledge copied from any one input, as when the contribution is the edge rather than either reconstructable endpoint.
Nor must every intermediate step make the current draft more interesting. Exploration may produce weak candidates, and validation may only prevent an interesting claim from outrunning its support. The progressive claim applies to selection: accepted transitions should improve the expected update, strengthen its warrant, or protect one without sacrificing the other.
Interestingness must exert selection pressure
A workflow can improve correctness, structure, style, and citation coverage while converging on polished filler. This happens when it never discriminates the contribution from a generic treatment of the same topic. Since weakly discriminated qualities tend to be underselected, naming interestingness as an aspiration is insufficient; the acceptance judgment must compare the candidate with what the intended reader or existing knowledge base already supplies.
The governing test is:
Relative to the intended reader and the existing knowledge base, what update does this artifact warrant that a generic treatment could not?
A bare writing prompt does not determine this intended contribution. It may elicit fluent topical knowledge while leaving the update unspecified. Additional stages help only when they search for, test, or preserve an answer to the question rather than elaborating the topic around it.
Scope
The claim concerns substantive knowledge-writing. A logistical message, authoritative record, faithful transcription, or settled rendering can be valuable without being interesting. Exposition can also be valuable without adding globally novel knowledge when it produces a real update for its particular audience. The relevant baseline is the intended reader's prior, not everything humanity or a model already knows.
Relevant Notes:
- A retained instruction preserves what testing selected โ exemplifies: evaluation and retention can add value even when every candidate ingredient was available from model weights
- Mixed epistemic status must be preserved below the document level โ enables: preserving the warrant of individual claims prevents a surprising synthesis from borrowing authority from better-supported material around it
- Knowledge storage does not imply contextual activation โ mechanism: available knowledge contributes to an update only when the workflow brings it to bear on the governing angle
