Admitting a human into the boundary trades reflectivity for autonomy

Is one system "more reflective" than another, gradedly, the way we would like to say one is more autonomous? The question has the same shape as measuring autonomy, and no cleaner an answer. Reflective system already names the two ends of a coupling continuum: procedural reflection, where the running code and its self-representation are one structure — the Smalltalk image edits its own compiler with the compiler — and declarative reflection, where a separate representation must be kept consistent with what it describes, the way kb/types/tag-readme.md and the validator dispatching on its own path are two artifacts held together only by a naming convention.
Between total fusion and two artifacts with no consistency mechanism at all, coupling comes in every degree, and "60% reflective" has no more a natural cutoff on that continuum than "40% autonomous" did on the excavator's. Reflective coverage is graded across representational forms already replaces a bare yes/no with a profile — which forms, what operation depth — but that grades the thoroughness of a reflective relationship already declared to hold; it doesn't settle whether the relationship holds at all.
One move would dissolve this problem outright: permit people to count as internal reflective components whenever they hold an established causal role, rather than requiring an actual process to consult a self-representation. Taking it would satisfy the five reflective-system requirements for nearly any maintained system — a standing maintainer role is an established boundary component, not a post-hoc rescuer; the system's own structure and behavior are the represented aspects; the source code is what the maintainer reads as a description of the running system; the maintainer is the internal process that inspects and acts through it; and editing the source, building, and running changes later behavior, while observed behavior feeds back into edits through an established maintenance process. Under this move, "how reflective, gradedly" gets an easy, nearly universal answer: yes, cheaply, almost regardless of design.
That would not be a solution; it would be a relocation. Making reflection cheap to satisfy does not remove the need to discriminate between systems — it only moves the discriminating work to a different question: of the now-cheaply-reflective loop, how much runs without the human whose inclusion made it cheap in the first place? That is autonomy, and it has exactly the same open measurement problem reflectivity started with — no principled scalar, a per-function profile instead, and commensurable decompositions required before two profiles can be compared or one profile tracked over time. Admitting the human would buy nothing but a change of address for the difficulty.
Commonplace's own reflective system definition declines the move for exactly this reason: its boundary stays strictly computational, so a human's tacit judgment never counts as satisfying the causal-connection requirement, whatever established role that person holds. The consequence is not merely fewer words. For any given pathway, reflective implies autonomous — only a genuinely non-human process can consult a self-representation under the stricter reading — so a pathway that qualifies as reflective at all needs no separate autonomy reading; the pathways that involve a human are simply non-reflective, described directly through self-improving system's own, independent autonomy grading rather than through a second axis layered on top of reflection. The vocabulary carries one fewer tracked axis. What it does not carry away is the underlying difficulty: it sits squarely on reflectivity's own coupling-continuum problem — no principled scalar for how tightly a pathway's implementation and self-representation are fused — rather than split across two.
Open Questions
- Whether this is a general pattern — that widening a boundary to make one property cheap always relocates rather than removes the measurement difficulty, a kind of conservation law for these gradings — or whether some boundary choice could make both reflectivity and autonomy simultaneously easy to compare, not just easy to satisfy.
- Whether describing a system pathway by pathway under the stricter, computational-only reading genuinely reads simpler in practice, or merely trades one hard-to-satisfy global label for several smaller, more numerous claims that add back up to the same complexity.
