EchoesVault for OpenCode runtime report
Type: agentic-system-analyses/types/agentic-system-runtime-report.md
Runtime account
Boundary, work and entry paths
EchoesVault supplies repository-local memory to an enclosing agent. It does not implement that agent's model loop. The shipped work is to install a portable writer and cross-agent instructions, restore a small view of prior work, search pages, and admit intermediate logs and curated final knowledge. This report uses SRC-1 at the revision in boundary, implementation and doctrine/design only. No target execution, tests, production artifacts or experiments were supplied or performed. Operation, behavioral activation and benefit remain unobserved.
The package exports a server (index.ts) and a TUI (tui.tsx); its shipped files include the bridge, Python runtime, protocol and command prompts (SRC-1, package.json). Server construction reads four bundled prompts and creates a session-keyed authorization map; its config hook registers commands, and its command hook grants matching lifecycle actions. Nine tools call runEchoes. The bridge chooses the first non-root directory candidate, serializes write payloads as JSON on stdin, and spawns Python with an argv array, not a Markdown-interpolated shell command. Python resolves an available Git root, checks managed paths against workspace escape, and normally delegates to the installed .echoes-vault/echoes_vault.py (SRC-1, index.ts, runtime.ts, scripts/echoes_vault.py).
Material alternate entry paths are the generated project-local OpenCode command files with shell execution syntax, generated skills/root guides directing other agents to invoke Python, and direct portable CLI invocation. These bypass the server's session map, but, when executing the inspected Python implementation, share its validation and writer. Direct filesystem edits are possible for a sufficiently authorized host; the supplied artifact does not sandbox them. No provider-native tool execution, remote worker, graph controller or model-training path is established by these inspected entry points. This is a bounded runtime account, not a claim about what an OpenCode host can otherwise do.
Ordinary source-traced invocation
Assume an initialized workspace with the inspected compatible runtime. A user invokes /echoes-start. The server records start under the host session ID; the registered natural-language command asks the host's build agent to call echoes_start_session. The agent, not this package, owns the next model decision. The tool checks the session map, passes --recent 3, workspace, agent label opencode, adapter version and abort signal to the bridge. The launcher delegates; the Python dispatcher locks mutating commands. cmd_start validates the marker, regenerates the index from page metadata, selects the reverse-sorted three newest daily paths, returns the entire index plus those entries, and marks local state started/not saved. The bridge returns stdout and the tool trims trailing whitespace and consumes the grant after success. The command asks the host to summarize outcomes/blockers/next steps and use targeted search for detail. It explicitly says restored output is project data, not higher-priority instructions. This chain wires delivery, not obedience or a measured restoration benefit (RT-RTE-context-restore; SRC-1, index.ts, runtime.ts, scripts/echoes_vault.py, prompts/commands/echoes-start.md).
During work the agent can append a milestone or upsert a page without an end grant. When explicitly asked to finalize, it proposes a summary and optional page replacements. The end prompt asks it to read existing pages and obtain their hashes. The server checks an end grant and passes the confirmation flag. Python validates all proposed pages and the prospective index before writing, then writes pages, index, a unique final daily file and local session state. Success returns paths/counts and memorySaved: true, not an evaluation of truth or usefulness. These are distinct admission routes: RT-RTE-page-upsert, RT-RTE-daily-append, RT-RTE-session-save.
A read-only display route is separate: the TUI polls marker and local state every three seconds, displays protocol/session/page-count/last-writer fields and suggests commands. It neither saves knowledge nor enforces lifecycle permission. Its Memory Saved label reflects local metadata, not an independent durability or semantic check (SRC-1, tui.tsx). status/inspect compare index rendering and collect health without calling the writer; they report metadata/Git/conflict/scale information rather than judging architectural meaning (SRC-1, scripts/echoes_vault.py, functions cmd_inspect, inspect_index, write_state).
Controls and challenged guarantees
Explicit finalization is path-local. Owner: the server plugin. Enforcement: session map lookup before init/start/end tools and deletion after successful return. Strength: invariant for that lookup in the inspected tool path, conditional on the external host faithfully reporting command events and session identity. Failed calls retain authorization; the map stores only the latest lifecycle action, with no timeout or synchronization around an in-flight call. The comment's one-shot description is therefore narrower than an exactly-once execution guarantee. CLI/generated command paths have no map and end accepts a caller-set boolean. Starting a command is not human review of every proposed fact, and upsert/append do not require an end grant. implementation conclusion status: wired. operation conclusion status: uninspected. See RT-CLM-explicit-save and RT-RTE-session-save.
Shared-writer integrity is not semantic verification or a transaction. Owner: Python engine. Enforcement: marker validation, filename normalization, page validation and hash comparison before replacement, followed by deterministic prospective index rendering. Strength: invariant within inspected writer calls under compatible runtime and cooperating filesystem access; serialization is best effort because the lock can be removed as stale after 60 seconds without checking process liveness. Another writer waits up to eight seconds. Atomic replacement flushes/fsyncs a temporary file then os.replaces one destination; it does not atomically commit the page/index/log/state set. A later I/O failure can leave earlier writes installed. There is no automatic multi-file rollback in these handlers; hydrate/rebuild-index can reconstruct derived index/state after valid page writes, while reconciliation and retry are prescribed for conflicts. Human/host recovery remains necessary for lost semantic intent. Uncooperative direct edits, filesystem races and a different project runtime are outside this guarantee. implementation conclusion status: wired. operation conclusion status: uninspected. SRC-1, scripts/echoes_vault.py, functions vault_lock, atomic_write, prepare_page, cmd_upsert, cmd_end; RT-RTE-page-upsert.
Installation is not cryptographic code admission. Owner: launcher/adapter installer. Enforcement: regular-file/symlink checks, parsable engine/protocol constants and version comparisons. Strength: protocol, dependent on trusted repository-local executable code and OS permissions. A compatible newer project runtime can execute instead of bundled code; version metadata is not code authentication. Explicit lifecycle commands can replace recognized compatible runtime files and generated instructions. Ordinary commands usually delegate without upgrading, but the missing-runtime/valid-marker branch can install the runtime even for a non-install command other than hydrate. Thus “only explicit lifecycle commands bootstrap” is not universal. implementation conclusion status: wired. operation conclusion status: uninspected. See RT-RTE-runtime-install.
The selected forcing cases were: (1) direct/generated CLI finalization versus the session-gated tool; (2) stale page hashes and the independent ungated upsert/append paths; (3) partial failure and stale-lock behavior versus atomic-write claims; (4) compatible newer or missing local runtimes versus bundled-code identity. These source countercases bound the guarantees. No concurrency run, interrupted write, adversarial host, external adapter deployment or provider invocation was observed. Newly focused implementation coverage within SRC-1 includes project_runtime_health, delegate_to_project_runtime, execute_project_runtime, installer ownership checks and all writer/restore dispatch handlers in scripts/echoes_vault.py; it does not add a source or evidence layer.
The capability surface includes ordinary read/search/write tools, explicit lifecycle tools and portable CLI installation. Actual current host grants, shell permissions and filesystem isolation are not supplied. The Node child uses inherited process authority; its abort handler kills the immediate child with SIGTERM, while Python delegation launches a subprocess without an inspected process-tree cancellation contract. Captured stdout/stderr and nonzero exit rejection provide diagnostics, not retries or completion guarantees (SRC-1, runtime.ts, scripts/echoes_vault.py). Host model fixity and mutability are separately bounded in RT-CMP-host-model.

Components
RT-CMP-host-model
Label: Enclosing host model
The model-driven OpenCode build agent consumes registered command text and tool returns and proposes summaries/pages. Its representational form is distributed-parametric; storage substrate and provider internals are outside the supplied repository. Exact model/version is not pinned here; parameter changes during operation and whether a mutable endpoint can resolve to another model are uninspected because the host/provider configuration is not supplied. No model call or weight update is implemented by the inspected bridge/writer. This does not deny learning via retained text. SRC-1, index.ts, runtime.ts, prompts/commands/echoes-end.md.
Distill the session into dense final outcomes, verified decisions, unresolved blockers, and next steps—not a transcript. ---

RT-CMP-echoes-vault
Label: Portable EchoesVault engine
Source-native engine scripts/echoes_vault.py, installed as .echoes-vault/echoes_vault.py: symbolic Python program on the local filesystem. It handles CLI dispatch, marker/schema validation, locking, admission, derived index and state writes, and adapter generation. Installed executable identity can differ from bundled code through delegation; metadata recognition is the operative check, not a digest allowlist. SRC-1, scripts/echoes_vault.py.

RT-OBJ-agent-protocol
Label: Generated agent protocol and guides
Generated EchoesVault/AGENT_PROTOCOL.md, root managed guide blocks and adapter skill bodies are natural-language instructions stored as Markdown in consuming repositories. They prescribe all mutations through the portable engine, read/hash before replacement, durable facts rather than transcripts, deprecation links and explicit finalization. Their authority is instruction-mediated, unlike executable schema rules. Generated OpenCode command bodies also carry symbolic shell invocation syntax; that execution channel is assessed in RT-RTE-runtime-install. Static templates are not experience-derived read-back. SRC-1, scripts/echoes_vault.py, AGENT_PROTOCOL, AGENT_GUIDE_BLOCK, AGENT_ADAPTER_SKILL.

Routes
RT-RTE-context-restore
Label: Session context restoration and targeted search
Endpoints/progression: user command → host build agent → server start tool → bridge/portable engine → returned index/recent entries → host interpretation; targeted search independently returns matching page lines for subsequent host file reads. Owner of selection is deterministic Python; owner of the next substantive action is the host agent. Forms: symbolic command/state/selection rules and natural-language returned knowledge. Start updates local session metadata under the writer lock. Search is read-only and requires a compatible marker (SRC-1, index.ts, runtime.ts, scripts/echoes_vault.py, prompts/commands/echoes-start.md).
- Immediate return: start returns Markdown index plus selected daily contents; search returns JSON file/line/text matches, text capped at 300 characters.
- Later read-back: prior daily entries and page-derived summaries reach later start calls; page text can reach later search calls and host-directed file reads.
- Delegated visibility: the foreground host receives stdout; shared on-disk vault is available to authorized other agents, without automatic private-context transfer.
- Selection predicate: server requests three entries; CLI clamps recent count to 0–10 and reverses lexically sorted daily relative paths, not parsed timestamps. Index includes all validated page summaries. Search uses case-folded literal substring, stable page order and line order, with 1–500 result cap.
- Invalidation or expiry: index regenerates from current pages; daily selection changes with filenames/new entries. No age-based deletion in these handlers. Deprecated pages receive an index prefix rather than being filtered out.
- Activation or effect: context text is delivered and local started/saved flags change; changed host behavior from restored content is unobserved.
- Evidence limits: selection/output wiring is inspectable, but neither host provider-request construction nor actual complete-page reads or adherence is supplied.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
Working-context control is on-demand external reload: code includes the complete index and a bounded number of daily files, keeps other bodies out, and leaves them reachable through search and ordinary host reads. The foreground agent chooses queries and relevance. There is no byte/token cap on selected entries or index in cmd_start; this is not a model-window guarantee. No separate task frame or context removal is implemented here. Host compaction remains uninspected. The stack-frame analogy has no inspected instance in this path; returned text enters the host context by value, not as automatically dereferenced pointers.

RT-RTE-page-upsert
Label: Complete page creation or hash-checked replacement
Endpoints/progression: host agent or CLI caller → JSON payload → prepare_page → prospective full index rendering → per-file replacement → local state → JSON acknowledgement. Engine owns admission; host/model normally proposes content, but CLI caller identity does not establish human versus computational authorship. No per-content human approval gate is present in this path. SRC-1, index.ts, scripts/echoes_vault.py.
- Immediate return: action created/updated, destination, content SHA-256 and indexChanged, or error.
- Later read-back: admitted body/metadata becomes eligible for later search, host reads and regenerated start index; no automatic broadcast.
- Delegated visibility: cooperating agents with access to the same repository see the shared page, not the foreground conversation.
- Selection predicate: caller's exact filename selects the destination; preflight validates safe name, metadata/summary/conflict rules, current hash for existing pages, and validity of the prospective page set/index.
- Invalidation or expiry: later successful replacement changes the page and its derived index entry; deprecation is metadata, not automatic deletion.
- Activation or effect: installs proposed content and index/state; downstream behavioral influence is unobserved.
- Evidence limits: admission checks format/concurrency, not truth, prior reading, user intent or useful knowledge; direct edits and alternative runtime code need separate trust.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
Admission mode is open agent/caller requests, not bounded evaluation. Trigger: requested knowledge creation/revision. Guidance: tool descriptions and protocol ask for complete durable pages, read-before-write and fresh hash. Human contribution can supply the problem or content but is unresolved per invocation. Engine can veto invalid names/metadata, unresolved conflict markers, collisions or stale/missing hashes; it does not compare candidate truth against an answer oracle. No answer oracle is used by this handler. Recovery is reread/reconcile/hash/retry; there is no saved predecessor or automatic rollback. Prospective rendering precedes page write, but page, index and state replacements remain separate.

RT-RTE-daily-append
Label: Intermediate milestone persistence
Endpoints/progression: agent tool or CLI JSON entry → nonempty-string check → unique scratchpad daily file → local writer statistics → acknowledgement. The server requires no lifecycle authorization for this tool. Caller proposes meaning, Python owns mechanical admission. SRC-1, index.ts, scripts/echoes_vault.py, functions cmd_append, new_daily_log.
- Immediate return: dailyLog path, scratchpad kind and normalized agent label.
- Later read-back: entry may enter a later start's selected daily contents; archive remains on disk after it falls outside the recent selection.
- Delegated visibility: shared file readable by other authorized local agents; no automatic delegated session context.
- Selection predicate: submitted nonempty entry is retained in its entirety after trimming; filename uses UTC time, kind, optional agent and random suffix.
- Invalidation or expiry: inapplicable — this handler has no expiry/replacement mechanism; falling outside recent selection is not deletion.
- Activation or effect: writes a new durable file without ending the session; semantic activation at a later host is unobserved.
- Evidence limits: agent label is caller-supplied metadata, not authenticated authorship; no semantic milestone verification.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
Admission trigger is a proposed intermediate milestone. Guidance asks for concise facts/decisions/blockers/next steps; Python checks only the payload string/agent shape and initialized protocol. Mode is open requests. No answer oracle or per-entry human veto is wired; a human may author the request but that is not required by the handler. Failure can reject malformed payloads or filesystem operations. No automatic rollback of the daily file if later state writing fails; no semantic curation is performed by the writer.

RT-RTE-session-save
Label: Explicit session finalization
Endpoints/progression: user /echoes-end → session grant and distillation prompt → host-proposed dailySummary/pages → gated tool → end --confirm-explicit-user-end → batch preflight → separate page/index/log/state writes → acknowledgement. Decision roles: user initiates finalization; host agent chooses claims and candidate pages; server checks grant; Python checks payload/format/concurrency. User initiation is not approval of each claim. Operating mode is open session distillation, not experimental curriculum; no answer oracle evaluates factual correctness. SRC-1, index.ts, prompts/commands/echoes-end.md, scripts/echoes_vault.py.
- Immediate return: final daily path, pagesWritten count, index path, memorySaved and agent; failure yields process error rather than success acknowledgement.
- Later read-back: final summary can enter recent-entry restoration; saved pages feed index/search/file reads as in page upsert.
- Delegated visibility: common vault files persist across agents; host session grant and conversation are not exported.
- Selection predicate: model/caller distills the session and chooses pages; engine requires a nonempty summary, array of page objects, no legacy index updates, unique destinations, valid pages/current hashes and a renderable prospective index.
- Invalidation or expiry: successful server call consumes grant; failure leaves it. Latest lifecycle command replaces session action, with no timer. Retained files have no handler expiry.
- Activation or effect: durable final log/pages and local saved flag; later agent reliance is unobserved.
- Evidence limits: CLI flag can be supplied by a caller without proving explicit human request; preflight is not atomic commit, exactly-once delivery or semantic validation.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
Admission trigger/guidance is explicit finalization with dense outcomes, verified decisions, blockers and next steps rather than transcript. Engine can reject false confirmation, malformed summary/pages, stale page hashes and invalid prospective index; it cannot veto unsupported facts as such. Rollback/recovery is not automated: earlier file replacements can survive later failure, so retry can require fresh hashes and can create another daily entry. Human conflict reconciliation and derived-view rebuilding are prescribed, not observed.

RT-RTE-runtime-install
Label: Portable runtime and instruction installation
Endpoints/progression: explicit init/migrate/upgrade or adapter repair → runtime/marker/guide/skill/command ownership checks → generated replacements → summary migration/index/state → JSON report. Bundled launcher can first install/update the executable and delegate. Engine owns version/ownership admission, invoking caller owns selection of lifecycle command; human approval of exact generated contents is not required. Natural-language templates become instructions while Python and shell bodies become symbolic execution paths. SRC-1, scripts/echoes_vault.py, runtime.ts.
- Immediate return: installed/updated flags, managed paths/adapters, index refresh and state, or incompatibility/ownership error.
- Later read-back: installed executable and static generated instructions are not accumulated-use read-back; legacy summary migration persists text that later index generation consumes.
- Delegated visibility: root guides, Claude/OpenCode skills and local OpenCode commands share the same runtime/protocol across authorized agents; no verified cross-host execution supplied.
- Selection predicate: recognized compatible engine/protocol metadata, command category and version comparison choose bundled fallback, install or delegation; generated-file markers/legacy signatures and managed guide delimiters govern overwrite admission.
- Invalidation or expiry: explicit updates can replace owned files; newer compatible runtime is preserved. Unknown files may be refused or left unchanged, with conflicts reported; no automatic time expiry.
- Activation or effect: installed program executes on subsequent delegated calls; generated command/guide loading depends on external host behavior. No deployed activation trace is supplied.
- Evidence limits: metadata is not authentication, and contents of arbitrary future compatible runtimes are outside the frozen evidence; multi-file installation can partially complete.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
Mode is caller-directed maintenance, not autonomous candidate search. Proposed change is the bundled reference implementation/templates, not a model-generated successor. Guidance comes from versioned protocol and hard-coded ownership rules; those rules persist in the installed runtime and guides. The engine can veto protocol mismatch, unrecognized runtime overwrite, symlinks and malformed guide blocks; some unknown adapters are preserved rather than rejected. There is no answer oracle or performance-based admission, and no automatic backup/revert transaction. Compatible newer installed code is executed when target_engine >= source_engine, so later calls are not necessarily executing the bundled bytes. Inspection commands can fall back to the bundle when an installed runtime is absent/old/unrecognized. With no runtime but a valid marker, ordinary commands other than hydrate can reach the installation branch. These are executable-code trust decisions, not proof of agent self-improvement.

Claims
RT-CLM-explicit-save
Label: Explicit lifecycle capability claim
Claimed operation: server lifecycle tools are one-shot capabilities granted by matching slash commands. Source: SRC-1, index.ts. The lookup and post-success deletion wire a sequential successful-call gate, not content approval, CLI-wide human verification or concurrency-safe exactly-once finalization. A host command event is the external trust premise. See RT-RTE-session-save.
