Harness² runtime report
Type: agentic-system-analyses/types/agentic-system-runtime-report.md
Runtime account
Harness² is an improvement plane around external solver runtimes, not their complete tool-loop implementation. Its consequential work is to inspect task executions, edit the harness that guides another execution, run the edited harness, compose candidates and select a produced output. The shipped domain scheduler also retains adopted harnesses and model-written experience for later tasks. The ordinary return is a selected benchmark artifact plus selection, summary, audit and sweep records; a harness is an intermediate and potentially retained behavioral input, not the requested task deliverable. SRC-1: harness2/cli/run_sweep.py, harness2/core/schedule.py, harness2/core/recursion.py, harness2/core/selection.py.
This is an implementation trace. No execution traces or experiments were supplied. All operation and benefit conclusions remain uninspected, including model compliance, task success, actual criticism and transfer. Added inspection within SRC-1 covers sequential recursion, proposer subprocesses and caching, tree checks, context branches, selection/fallback, scheduler resume, JobBench extraction fallback, LAB validation and bundled WorkBuddy installation. These are implementation evidence, with prompt texts separately treated as doctrine/design. No additional source identity is introduced.
Ordinary shipped invocation
- An operator invokes
harness2with a benchmark/subset, OpenCode or Codex substrate, positivek, task split, optional seed, modes and worker count. The installed entry point callsharness2.cli.run_sweep:main. A real invocation constructs the adapter, checks readiness including judge configuration, records/checks namespace identity, constructs an audited proposer, and calls the scheduler.--dry-runinstead prints task streams without creating a proposer. The other installed commands are judge, report, setup, check, demo and bridge; they are not all equivalent adaptation entry paths. SRC-1:pyproject.toml,harness2/cli/run_sweep.py. - The scheduler parallelizes domains but keeps each domain's task stream sequential. Per-mode libraries are restricted to preceding task IDs before each task. Task namespaces encode benchmark, substrate, mode, k, seed/tag and task. Shared base runs precede each mode; OpenCode/Codex executor identity is separate from the improver/selector identity. See RT-RTE-task-recursion and RT-RTE-resume-reuse. SRC-1:
harness2/core/schedule.py. - For parallel mode (
agg), k base executions feed 2k independent invariant/domain proposals, their executions, then k independent compositions and executions. For sequential mode (seq), k rounds each propose two variants and compose one successor, carrying previous compositions and histories forward. Each mode accounts for 4k rollouts including shared bases and 3k improvement stages; retry calls, selection, reflection, caching and the sharing of base executions make this different from total model-call count. SRC-1:harness2/core/recursion.py. - Each improvement session receives a fresh filesystem context: task, allowed source files, rendered trajectories, deliverables or listings, current harness, candidate pool/diffs, decision notes and preceding library. Proposer sessions copy that context into temporary workspaces; the next step is owned by code after the external session returns. Disk edits under
context/harnessare harvested; reply prose is not applied as a patch. Structural validation, adapter checks and grader-marker tripwires admit the tree, with one invalid-proposal retry, then inheritance of the fallback harness. See RT-RTE-edit-admission. SRC-1:harness2/core/context.py,harness2/core/proposer.py,harness2/core/recursion.py. - Code materializes each tree and dispatches to a benchmark-owned launcher, not a generic in-process solver. For JobBench, the adapter stages/renders a tree, launches a runner, requires output and marks completion; subsequent consumers render its trajectory and artifacts. WorkBuddy uses Harbor batches and the shipped agents; LAB uses its bundled runners. The effect boundary is the external runtime's tools, filesystem and benchmark environment. See RT-RTE-solver-execution. SRC-1:
harness2/benchmarks/jobbench.py,harness2/benchmarks/lab.py,harness2/benchmarks/workbuddy.py. - The scheduler constructs exactly the k composed finals, not the bases, as the selection pool. At k=1 code delivers the single valid final without a selector model session. At larger k a selector sees anonymous artifacts and task/source evidence. Adoption is an output choice, not a score-based proof that the harness improved. Reflection and library admission follow successful selection if a library exists; later task improvers can inspect the retained result. See RT-RTE-output-selection and RT-RTE-experience-admission. SRC-1:
harness2/core/schedule.py,harness2/core/selection.py. - Task summaries record partial failures and final status, then the CLI writes a sweep record and suggests the separate judge command. Judging invokes adapter scoring on selected outputs; it is not the selector's expected-answer oracle. Namespace judge readiness does not mean the adaptation loop consumed grading verdicts. SRC-1:
harness2/cli/run_sweep.py,harness2/core/schedule.py,harness2/core/judge.py.
Forcing routes and guarantee boundaries
Four source-level forcing cases materially qualify the ordinary account.
Invalid edit versus inherited tree. A stage can keep its base unchanged, return an invalid tree twice, fail to build evidence, or fail transport. These branches inherit a fallback and can still execute it as a candidate. A composed-final label therefore does not prove an actual harness change. Admission is owned by _run_stage/_accept_tree; structural constraints are an invariant of successfully admitted new stage trees, not a guarantee of semantic correctness or benign code. read_tree filters the editable surface; write_tree itself writes normalized mapping paths and preserves off-surface destination files. Direct substrate materialization checks presence and install mode rather than rerunning the whole admission chain. Those implementation paths are real APIs, but no supplied run establishes an adversarial caller bypass. SRC-1: harness2/core/recursion.py, harness2/core/tree.py, harness2/substrate/opencode.py, harness2/substrate/codex.py; RT-RTE-edit-admission.
Final-only selection versus fallback helpers. The shipped scheduler rejects any pool policy other than finals. selection_pool explicitly discards bases. The lower-level selector still supports mixed pools and fallback to a delivered base; a finals-only selector failure can choose the lexicographically first remaining final. At k=1 it makes no comparative choice. _fallback assigns a label and fallback=True but does not set sel.ok=True; the scheduler can consequently retain a chosen label while treating selection as failed. The existence of neutral-fallback helper code is not a shipped base-abstention guarantee. SRC-1: harness2/core/schedule.py, harness2/core/selection.py; RT-RTE-output-selection.
Answer-free context versus capability to acquire other data. Context construction skips adapter-declared answer-key paths and rejects marker strings in supported text suffixes and filenames. Proposed trees, selection trees and reflected experience have related checks. These are bounded tripwires, not universal contamination or prompt-injection isolation. The OpenCode proposer configures external-directory permissions; the Claude channel explicitly skips permissions. Both invoke tool-capable external sessions and inherit much of the host environment. A prompt requests that evidence be treated as data and that candidate code never be executed; it does not enforce that request. Provider-native tools, shell/subprocess access, plugins, hooks, network access and external runtime callbacks are not all mediated by the context-copy check. Deployment isolation and external permission semantics are required contracts, not established by copying into a temporary directory. SRC-1: harness2/core/context.py, harness2/core/proposer.py, harness2/core/prompts.py; RT-CLM-answer-free, RT-BAP-harness-consumption.
Subset-controlled proposer evidence versus other consumers. WorkBuddy sets proposer_deliverables='names' only for its supported code subset. For code, _write_rollout emits a listing and avoids artifact-body/image/raw-file branches; _write_pool emits a listing rather than flat deliverable content. Trajectories, harnesses and task material remain included. The supported web and office subsets instead use contents mode: rollout evidence can include per-file renderings and images, with flat-text fallback when no per-file content exists; pool evidence uses flat deliverable text. Office also exposes raw artifact assets, which the rollout builder copies when per-file content exists. Reflection calls the same context builder and inherits these subset-dependent branches: names-only for code, contents for web and office. Selection independently calls deliverable_text. Thus the names-only option withholds artifact bodies on particular code-subset improvement/reflection branches, not across WorkBuddy, all models or all channels. Conversely, JobBench contents mode can fall back from the judge extractor to raw text. Claims that every proposer sees the exact judge rendering would be false on that reachable fallback. SRC-1: harness2/benchmarks/workbuddy.py, harness2/core/context.py, harness2/core/selection.py, harness2/benchmarks/jobbench.py.
proposer_deliverables=("names" if subset == "code" else "contents"), ---
harness2/benchmarks/workbuddy.pyif self.subset == "office": return [path for _name, path in RENDER.raw_files(Path(run_dir), self.subset)] ---
harness2/benchmarks/workbuddy.py
WorkBuddy also makes an upstream trial choice before final-output selection. _launch ranks fresh finished trials; execute takes the first fresh result. execute_many ranks reusable trials and takes k. _rank prefers trials with a parseable normalized score, then recency within each group, not higher score values. Single-rollout cache reuse instead chooses the newest usable trial without this ranking. This is grade-availability selection, not an expected-answer oracle delivered to the improver or verification of a lesson. Evaluation-related selection therefore is not confined to the separate judge CLI. These additional inspected paths supply implementation evidence only. SRC-1: harness2/benchmarks/workbuddy.py.

Context, authority and recovery
The improvement session resembles an isolated frame: selected evidence is copied in, only harvested harness edits and reply text escape, and the temporary session tree is removed. Persisted audit responses/workspaces are separate from that temporary lifetime. Isolation here means separate supplied working context, not proven process security. Observation truncation and substrate trajectory renderers determine what past work reaches the next session. Sequential recursion explicitly reconstructs evidence with history; this is not one ever-growing model conversation. Full library files are made reachable on disk; their presence does not prove the model opens or follows them. SRC-1: harness2/core/proposer.py, harness2/core/context.py, harness2/core/recursion.py.
The current capability grant is broader than the proposal's editable surface. The surface limits what edits code accepts, whereas external agent sessions have their own tools and credentials. OpenCode harnesses can carry scripts, skills, subagents and plugins; Codex harnesses carry AGENTS.md, skills, scripts and command hooks. Subagents are deployment-controlled: LAB disallows authored subagents, while OpenCode JobBench and WorkBuddy allow them. This flag validates authored subagent files, not every possible process spawned by shell code. LAB also checks required output/read_doc strings and emitted tools/permission consistency; those are not proofs that all binary-document reads use the intended tool. Bundled Codex launchers bypass approvals, sandbox and hook trust; WorkBuddy installs harness components into the external environment. SRC-1: harness2/core/tree.py, harness2/core/spec.py, harness2/benchmarks/lab.py, harness2/benchmarks/jobbench.py, harness2/benchmarks/workbuddy.py, third_party/lab_runner/adapt_runs_cx/run_codex_lab.py, third_party/jb_runner/run_benchmark_codex_cli_adapt.sh, third_party/wb_runner/agents/oc_harness_agent.py.
Model parameters are not edited by this framework. The operative changes are to explicit behavioral inputs and executable extensions; the separate distributed-parametric components are RT-CMP-proposer, RT-CMP-selector, RT-CMP-solver and RT-CMP-judge. Source configuration names endpoints/models but does not freeze their weights or prove deployment immutability. Recovery includes transport retry, invalid-edit fallback, dead rollout records, partial task summaries, output/harness fingerprints and summary resume checks. These mechanisms preserve or reuse evidence under code predicates; none establishes reliable task completion or improvement. RT-RTE-task-recursion
Label: Task recursion and composition
Endpoints: operator-selected task stream → shared bases → INV/DOM edits → compositions → per-mode finals. Code scheduler owns progression; model sessions decide candidate contents under benchmark-shaped natural-language prompts. agg branches independent candidates/compositions; seq carries current harness and round history. Task/mode/run identities and explicit trees, rollout views, ledger and notes are state. Domain threads coordinate independent libraries; stage/rollout pools return results in deterministic caller order. No expected-answer oracle is supplied to improvement sessions; benchmark task/source materials and execution observations are their requested basis. Operating mode is a bounded per-task experiment within a potentially continuing task stream, not an arbitrary open-ended agent chat. SRC-1: harness2/core/recursion.py, harness2/core/schedule.py, harness2/core/prompts.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: ModeResult with trees, rollouts, finals, ledger, notes and errors, then selection and task summary.
- Later read-back: sequential stages receive prior harnesses, decisions and trajectories; cross-task library admission is separately recorded below.
- Delegated visibility: each proposer gets a newly built evidence directory, not another session's private conversation.
- Selection predicate: explicit agg/seq mode and k; composition uses shared base evidence plus candidate/history pools.
- Invalidation or expiry: temporary sessions are removed; work directories/audits remain; failed stages inherit current/base trees.
- Activation or effect: accepted trees are handed to fresh solver executions; actual model use and benefit are unobserved.
- Evidence limits: no supplied execution evidence; 3k stage count does not count all retries/selection/reflection calls.

RT-RTE-edit-admission
Label: Proposed harness admission
Endpoints: harvested context/harness → read_tree → repair/validation → Stage.tree → rollout. The proposer supplies content; code can reject it for off-surface files, emptiness, tree constraints, adapter invariants or marker strings. No human per-content approval is wired into this path. Trigger is each proposal/composition; guidance is the current harness, task-specific prompt, evidence and library. The proposal changes instructions, deterministic helpers or runtime extensions, not model weights. Retry feedback names the rejection; after two invalid attempts code recovers by inheriting the fallback. Accepted trees and notes persist in task artifacts; later selection may admit a tree into the library. SRC-1: harness2/core/recursion.py, harness2/core/tree.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: accepted Stage, or fallback Stage with error and accounting.
- Later read-back: stage trees/notes enter composition and reflection contexts; selected trees can enter later task evidence.
- Delegated visibility: a private copied session workspace returns harvested tree and reply, not a shared live agent context.
- Selection predicate: valid surface contents and adapter constraints, not measured superiority.
- Invalidation or expiry: invalid proposals are retried once; exhausted/error paths keep a copy of fallback; no general version rollback service is shown.
- Activation or effect: new tree becomes executable harness input through the rollout adapter.
- Evidence limits: validation ensures bounded shape constraints, not semantic correctness, tool compliance, security or improvement.
Guarantee owner: recursion admission code. Enforcement point: _accept_tree before accepting the stage. Guarantee strength: invariant, limited to accepted new stage trees. Covered path: harvested proposal validation; alternate paths: evidence-build/transport failures and unchanged/fallback trees do not establish a new validated edit; direct materialise/write APIs have weaker checks. External contract: adapter validation and runtime loading must implement their declared interfaces.

Theory account: guidance can encode revisable procedures, with whole files as localized units, but the content of generated candidates is not supplied. Theory-builder conditions 1–4: (1) afforded — localized language/code files can carry whole theories; (2) afforded — deployed text/code can shape solver decisions, without proving compliance; (3) claimed — prompts request execution-motivated changes, but no actual content-directed criticism is observed; (4) wired — sequential recursion keeps revision results for later rounds, conditional on those results containing criticism. This does not establish all four conditions for any exercised builder. Addressability is file/component-level with finer edits possible; actual assumptions/scope articulation is uninspected. Persistence reaches rounds and potentially later tasks through library admission. Learning: uninspected — no improved-capacity or attribution evidence. Reflection: afforded — harnesses and execution records represent parts of the system and proposed edits can change subsequent executions; accurate representation and exercised causal coupling are unobserved. Reflective theory builder: uninspected — method criticism against own operation is not established. Autonomous theory builder: uninspected — code/model control of proposal/admission is wired, but every internal theory operation is not evidenced.

- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: RunView pointing to produced run directory, or dead rollout with error.
- Later read-back: adapters render executions into improvement/selection/reflection evidence; completion marks can permit cached execution reuse.
- Delegated visibility: solver receives installed harness/task environment, not the improver conversation; authored subagent contexts are delegated to the external runtime contract.
- Selection predicate: configured benchmark/substrate and materialized harness, with adapter cache predicates checked before fresh execution. WorkBuddy fresh trials and batched reusable trials prefer grade availability, then recency, not higher scores; single-rollout reuse chooses the newest usable trial.
- Invalidation or expiry: staging is removed; changed/missing fingerprints or output invalidate reuse; timeouts/dead runs can remain unmarked.
- Activation or effect: external agent tools can write task artifacts and execute scripts/extensions; no supplied run demonstrates which instruction or extension actually fired.
- Evidence limits: full external runtime, container, provider-native tools and remote callback semantics are not frozen; reference substrate argv/env are not universal launcher enforcement.

RT-RTE-output-selection
Label: Final artifact selection
Endpoints: composed finals → rendered eligible pool → trivial or anonymous model selection → selection.json. Scheduler constructs finals-only pools and rejects other policy values. Code drops missing/empty/non-delivered outputs; for state-deliverable cells it can use a trajectory when no artifact pool survives. At k=1 selection is automatic. Otherwise the model proposes a choice; code admits only a recognized anonymous ID. No human veto is wired here. No answer oracle is provided: selection evaluates task/source and candidate evidence, while separate judging later invokes adapter scoring. Selection fallback is not evidence of superiority. SRC-1: harness2/core/schedule.py, harness2/core/selection.py, harness2/core/judge.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: Selection including chosen label/ID, reasons, drops, errors, costs and persisted path.
- Later read-back: summary/resume and judge consumers read selection records; successful adoption drives reflection and optional library admission.
- Delegated visibility: selector gets task/source, anonymous candidates and supported assets; no proposer conversation is forwarded wholesale.
- Selection predicate: eligible k finals; at k=1 single candidate; at larger k parse valid choice or use failure fallback.
- Invalidation or expiry: no valid pool fails; persistence failure sets ok false; summary reuse separately checks artifacts and harness identity.
- Activation or effect: chooses which produced output is delivered/judged and which harness is eligible for retention; no causal improvement established.
- Evidence limits: lower-level mixed-pool support is not reachable through shipped run_task pool_policy; fallback label alone is not successful selection.
Guarantee owner: scheduler. Enforcement point: run_task policy check and selection_pool. Guarantee strength: invariant for shipped scheduler pool construction, not all direct calls to run_selection. Required external contract: adapters accurately identify/render agent outputs. The artifact-rendering contract itself has fallbacks, including JobBench raw extraction.

RT-RTE-experience-admission
Label: Reflect and admit experience
Endpoints: successful adoption and task-local improvement record → reflection model → parsed experience → per-mode/domain Library.add. Trigger is successful selection when a library exists. The selector model proposes edit explanations and cue/lesson/evidence/confidence; code requires nonempty cue, lesson and evidence and checks marker strings. It does not verify that the lesson is true or that the contrast establishes improvement. Humans configure/start the workflow; no per-lesson human approval is wired. Guidance asks for execution contrasts and permits NO_ENTRY rather than a lesson. Persisted result is the adopted full harness plus selection reason, edit notes when supplied and experience, indexed for subsequent task improvers. Detailed memory transformations are left to the memory analyst. SRC-1: harness2/core/selection.py, harness2/core/schedule.py, harness2/core/library.py, harness2/core/prompts.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: experience mapping or empty result; optional library entry path and rebuilt index.
- Later read-back: later same-domain/mode task sessions receive library context; the scheduler restricts it to preceding tasks.
- Delegated visibility: reflection gets harness comparisons, decisions, trajectories and deliverables/listings; later tasks get retained tree and explanation, not private reflection reasoning.
- Selection predicate: library configured, selection ok, required experience strings present and marker checks pass.
- Invalidation or expiry: missing/malformed/NO_ENTRY response yields no admission; retain/forget remove entries; same task entry overwrites its prior harness, not a general rollback history.
- Activation or effect: retained instructions/code become evidence available to future improvers; generated later harnesses can reach solver authority through edit admission.
- Evidence limits: entry membership and read availability do not prove later use, compliance, transfer or improved capacity.

Self-improvement attribution boundary: the shipped improvement framework and its retained behavioral inputs, over later tasks in a domain; objective: better execution of requested task work, specified independently of any particular edit. Dispositional evidence-responsive self-change is afforded: execution evidence is supplied to proposal/reflection, accepted edits change harness organization, and staged harnesses can govern later solver behavior through RT-BAP-harness-consumption. Exercised self-improvement is uninspected: no supplied later operation closes the causal link from retained change to later behavior, and no causal comparison establishes benefit. Same-task edited executions provide a wired opportunity, not observed causation. Learning, reflection and autonomy are not inferred from library admission. Candidate lessons can contain formulated explanations, but no actual generated lesson is supplied; theory content and content-directed criticism remain uninspected.
RT-RTE-resume-reuse
Label: Summary and rollout reuse
Endpoints: existing namespace config/summary/run marks → identity and integrity predicates → skipped task or cached rollout; otherwise rerun. Code decides, without a model or human approval per reuse. CLI identity includes model strings, endpoints, method version and task stream; lower-level APIs do not necessarily perform that CLI-wide identity check. _resume requires successful summary/modes/selections, existing output and harness, optional artifact integrity check and stored harness fingerprint match, then restores libraries. Model-name equality is not weight identity. SRC-1: harness2/cli/run_sweep.py, harness2/core/schedule.py, harness2/benchmarks/jobbench.py, harness2/benchmarks/workbuddy.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: skipped TaskResult or reusable adapter run path, otherwise ordinary execution continues.
- Later read-back: cached selection/experience can reconstruct library state, and cached artifacts feed consumers again.
- Delegated visibility: restored records replace fresh agent invocations rather than forwarding a hidden model conversation.
- Selection predicate: successful records and the specific namespace/artifact/fingerprint checks at each layer. WorkBuddy batched reuse additionally ranks grade-bearing trials before ungraded trials, newest first within each group, and takes k; single-rollout reuse takes the newest usable trial.
- Invalidation or expiry: missing/changed outputs or harnesses, unreadable summaries and unsuccessful states cause rerun; cached proposer responses separately require matching call fingerprint and harvested workspace when requested.
- Activation or effect: avoids new execution and reconstructs prior admitted state; actual reuse is unobserved.
- Evidence limits: integrity predicates are not provenance authentication, semantic validity checks or exact-model pins; optional adapter checks cover only implementations supplying them.

Force: prose requests model-interpreted behavior; executable extensions can act inside the runtime loop subject to external dispatch semantics. Horizon: fresh executions within a task, and later tasks only when retained material actually shapes an admitted later harness. Library evidence reaches an improver first; it is not automatically installed as every future solver's harness. SRC-1: harness2/substrate/opencode.py, harness2/substrate/codex.py, harness2/core/schedule.py, third_party/wb_runner/agents/oc_harness_agent.py, third_party/jb_runner/run_benchmark_codex_cli_adapt.sh.

The path is wired at installation/dispatch boundaries; observed activation and benefit remain uninspected. Hooks/plugins offer a capability surface, not a universal guarantee covering direct calls, remote workers or every external runtime tool path. Current grants and deployment isolation must be established at those external consumers, not inferred from the accepted edit surface.
