GBrain epistemic report
Type: agentic-system-analyses/types/agentic-system-epistemic-report.md
Source-and-claim boundary
The question is what licenses reliance on GBrain's acquired or generated content, and which checks actually change its later availability or use. Scope and exclusions are those in boundary; evidence identities are in its Source register. This remains a complete artifact, partial loop analysis. All direct reads below concern SRC-1 at the frozen revision and supply implementation evidence, except the explicitly labelled synthesis prompt. No target execution, observed run or causal experiment was supplied or performed. Private corpora, host compliance and provider internals remain outside the inspected evidence.
The public memory-control claim is RT-CLM-memory-control. The more specific source-grounding demand is EPI-CLM-transcript-grounding. Neither possession of provenance nor permission to write establishes source truth.

Bounded conclusion
GBrain has operative source-relative checks, not just a provenance label. Dream synthesis separates mechanical verification from removal/repair and from persistence. Optional model grounding adds an evidence-consuming support judgment over selected transcript windows, with a named criterion: sources state or directly imply the claim. Its result affects retention only under calibrated, acting policy with adequate coverage and sufficiently low probability. Passing, holding and keeping on error are different outcomes. The model decision is not independent verification of transcript truth. See EPI-RTE-mechanical-check, EPI-RTE-grounding-check, EPI-RTE-grounding-disposition.
The inspected verifier quarantines failed units, rebuilds projections from the repaired body and retains rejected text in review frontmatter. It is not an unconditional gate before any use: child writes precede verification; quote verification can be disabled; failures can leave existing output intact. Retention and projection rebuilding do not establish lifecycle integration of accepted ampliative knowledge. Candidate synthesis requests are implemented, but no candidate trace establishes that these requests produced, tested and accepted a particular non-entailed proposition. See EPI-RTE-dream-candidates, EPI-RTE-repair-retention.
Consolidation is a concrete counterexample to inferring model synthesis from a phase label or orchestrator comment. Its inspected selection copies the highest-confidence fact's claim and aggregates metadata. Given facts “Alice prefers tea” at confidence 0.9 and “Alice prefers tea” at 0.6 in an eligible cluster, the strict greater-than reducer selects the first text unchanged and computes average weight 0.75. That deduction follows the code, not an executed test. It neither adds an explanatory theory nor checks that Alice actually prefers tea. This qualifies the runtime's phrase “optional synthesis, patterns, consolidation” without superseding its valid maintenance-driver container. See EPI-RTE-fact-consolidation.
Live answers use a different authority path. Quote matching can repair spans or remove quotation marks and append an unverified marker while still delivering the text. Its sources include the user's question. A matched quotation therefore warrants reproduction from supplied text, not endorsement or truth. A citation absent from the gather is warn-only in the inspected return path. The synthesize verb also has explicit failure/fallback branches rather than always presenting a composed answer. See EPI-RTE-answer-check, EPI-RTE-answer-delivery.
Owner confirmation and forgetting modify reliance independently of factual proof. Confirmation records a trust-tier endorsement with scoped permission or interactive token confirmation, not a mandated evidence-consuming acceptance decision. Forgetting records durable withdrawal and active-memory exclusion; review acceptance can enact that withdrawal, but an accepted duplicate verdict with no registered handler can have no merge/link effect. Neither route licenses a universal correctness or deletion claim. See EPI-RTE-owner-confirmation, EPI-RTE-memory-withdrawal.
BrainBench supplies an implemented, gold-relative evaluation path with report and comparison-exit consumers. Its deterministic mode injects gold facts into the extraction seam, whereas LLM mode tests the real extractor under budget controls. These modes cannot be pooled into evidence of model extraction quality. No supplied score, intervention comparison or later behavioral trace establishes learning, successful self-improvement, autonomous theory building or reliable host uptake. Those properties remain independently unresolved, especially for unassessed feedback, optimization, hooks and other maintenance branches; they are not system-wide absences. Provider weights remain opaque, with inference/version limits in the component records. See EPI-RTE-writeback-evaluation, RT-CMP-chat-model, EPI-CMP-grounding-provider.
Shared records
Components
EPI-CMP-grounding-provider
Label: Grounding decide provider
Source-native identity: grounding slot policy.provider, noul answers and model_resolved. Representational form: external model judgment represented to the reducer by a numerical probability; source/claim windows are natural-language inputs. Storage substrate: external provider state; local decide receipts store answers and policy, not model parameters. Parameter changes during operation: external internals uninspected. Exact version pinned: not established by configured provider and resolved-model drift check. Mutable endpoint can resolve another model: policy records resolved model and can detect drift; provider endpoint internals uninspected. Distinct from RT-CMP-chat-model: this is the decide grounding slot, not the chat tool-choice interface; possible shared backend does not establish identity. SRC-1 src/core/cycle/grounding-decide.ts, implementation.
reason = result.model_resolved ? driftReason(policy, result.model_resolved) : undefined; ---
src/core/cycle/grounding-decide.ts
Operative objects
EPI-OBJ-compiled-truth
Label: Dream page body
Source-native identity: compiled_truth and separately processed timeline on a verifiable dream page. Representational form: natural-language claim units; storage substrate: engine page bodies and serialized Markdown. Candidate truth-apt content: statements about transcript participants, decisions, dates, events or ideas. Claimed role: retained source-grounded body eligible for later retrieval. Distinct from RT-OBJ-persistence-requests: content read from a committed page, not its request journal. SRC-1 src/core/cycle/synthesize-verify.ts, implementation.
const truth = verifyBody(page.compiled_truth ?? '', sources, { priorNorm, exemptNumericKeys, supersession: opts.supersession }); const timeline = verifyBody(page.timeline ?? '', sources, { priorNorm, exemptNumericKeys, supersession: opts.supersession }); ---
src/core/cycle/synthesize-verify.ts
EPI-OBJ-unverified-claims
Label: Unverified claim frontmatter
Source-native identity: unverified_claims, including text, reason, detail, sources and detection date. Representational form: natural-language rejected units with symbolic reason/provenance fields. Storage substrate: page frontmatter/Markdown. Candidate truth-apt content: original failed units, not accepted assertions. Claimed role: review retention separate from body. Distinct material part from EPI-OBJ-compiled-truth; no supplied runtime counterpart for this quarantine object. Consumer exposure is get-page review rather than body retrieval; no universal frontmatter-exclusion audit was performed. SRC-1 src/core/cycle/synthesize-verify.ts, implementation.

src/core/cycle/synthesize-verify.ts
EPI-OBJ-answer
Label: Think answer variants
Source-native identity: answer, answer_raw, quote_check, unverified_quotes, persist. Representational form: natural-language candidate answer with symbolic counts and warning metadata. Storage substrate: returned ThinkResult/verb response; conditional persistence candidate is separate from actual publication. Truth-apt content: claims in a composed answer. Claimed role: usable response with explicit quote diagnostics; raw and persistable variants have different force. No counterpart after comparison with RT-RTE-query-read, which returns evidence rows rather than a final composed answer. SRC-1 src/core/think/index.ts, implementation.

Routes
EPI-RTE-dream-candidates
Label: Dream synthesis candidates
Endpoints/progression: transcript selection and triage → synthesis child prompt → delegated production/write path → written page references for verification. Owner: cycle orchestration; caller enables work, model proposes content. Proposed change: transcript-derived personal pages; guidance says quote exactly, preserve concrete facts and ground claims. Source-relative scope, not a truth oracle. Open synthesis request, with model allowed to decline routine content. Computational selection and subsequent software write/repair checks are not per-content human review. The return/verification call sites establish a production request and consumer wiring; full producer modes and outputs are not assessed. Distinct from RT-RTE-maintenance-run: this is an internal synthesis phase also reachable through dream, not the maintain CLI diagnostic driver. SRC-1 src/core/cycle/synthesize.ts, implementation and prompt doctrine.
- Immediate return: child output/write references and phase result; no observed candidate instance supplied.
- Later read-back: written pages can enter verification and later retrieval.
- Delegated visibility: prompt includes transcript chunk, allowed paths and advisory triage material; full installed grants uninspected.
- Selection predicate: triage worth-processing, completion and budget eligibility; complete triage evaluator uninspected.
- Invalidation or expiry: completion/cooldown and budget controls recur; prompt-only semantic restrictions need later checks.
- Activation or effect: writes are followed by verification when enabled; model compliance unobserved.
- Evidence limits: indeterminate semantic relation without produced output; no acceptance of a particular ampliative claim demonstrated.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected

EPI-RTE-mechanical-check
Label: Mechanical source checks
Endpoints/progression: new body units and grounded transcript sources → quote matching, attribution and numeric/decision checks → per-unit failures, repairs and provenance. Owner/evaluator: deterministic string procedures; target/domain: whether a detected quoted span or numerical/attribution assertion is supported in supplied transcript text. Timing: after child writes; old normalized units and certain materialized history are skipped. Epistemic license: bounded lexical reproduction and attribution support, not source truth or full interpretation entailment. Force: output consumed by EPI-RTE-mechanical-disposition, not certification by naming. No supplied counterpart after comparison with RT-RTE-maintenance-run.
A concrete implementation deduction: normForGrounding(" ALICE—tea ") folds to alice-tea; whitespace ends are omitted, case folds and em dash becomes hyphen. Normalized equality alone loses case/dash distinctions. No target was executed. SRC-1 src/core/cycle/synthesize-verify.ts, implementation.
- Immediate return: verifyBody result including failures, repairs, quarantine list and substantive passing units.
- Later read-back: inapplicable — this evaluator's transient result is consumed by disposition; persisted diagnostics belong to the object/retention records.
- Delegated visibility: supplied transcript sources and inspected body units, not external corroboration.
- Selection predicate: new units under prior-normalized comparison; detected quote/number classes with caps and exemptions.
- Invalidation or expiry: prior revision changes which units are new; supersession checks are optional.
- Activation or effect: feeds removal/repair and optional model grounding.
- Evidence limits: no proof that all statements entail from source; caps, masked nonprose and unchanged units narrow coverage.

EPI-RTE-mechanical-disposition
Label: Mechanical repair disposition
Endpoints/progression: unit failures/repair proposals → remove failed unit or replace quote interior with source words → repaired body and quarantine frontmatter candidate. Owner: deterministic verifier. Target: new unit's continued body authority. Criterion: no detected mechanical failure; rejecting any failed unit is disposition, but a surviving unit is not thereby semantically accepted. Intended use/scope: limit unsupported quotations/numbers/attributions in dream body retrieval. No separate human decision or reference answer. Trigger: mechanical failure; veto removes whole unit; recovery preserves rejected wording for review, not automatic reinsertion. Same implementation as EPI-RTE-mechanical-check but different consequential function. No supplied runtime counterpart beyond maintenance container. SRC-1 src/core/cycle/synthesize-verify.ts, implementation.
- Immediate return: reduced body, repaired spans and frontmatter candidate.
- Later read-back: inapplicable — actual retention is declared separately in repair-retention.
- Delegated visibility: retained review text exposes failures; full subsequent review process uninspected.
- Selection predicate: any unitFailures removes unit; successful quote repairs leave other text intact.
- Invalidation or expiry: new checks can add quarantine; capped frontmatter retention is not permanent exhaustive audit.
- Activation or effect: enforcing reduction of candidate body when persistence succeeds; licenses only lexical source support.
- Evidence limits: no semantic acceptance of unchecked surrounding prose; error/disabled paths qualify enforcement.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected

EPI-RTE-grounding-check
Label: Grounding support judgment
Endpoints/progression: mechanically passing substantive unit → up to three selected source windows → decide provider noul request → probability/failure/drift information. Owner: grounding slot; evaluator: EPI-CMP-grounding-provider plus deterministic window selector. Target/domain: claim supported by selected conversation excerpts, not independently true in the world. Criterion asks that sources state or directly imply the claim. Intended use: additional source-grounding review for dream pages. Selection combines normalized substring, keywords and optional embedding neighbors; adequacy counts keyword coverage or substring, not semantic completeness. Distinct from RT-CMP-reranker-model's retrieval ordering and RT-RTE-subagent-loop's tool decisions. SRC-1 src/core/cycle/grounding-decide.ts, implementation.
- Immediate return: probability or failed/skipped result, with receipts requested.
- Later read-back: decide receipts support what-if reducer replay; complete later consumers uninspected.
- Delegated visibility: judge receives claim and selected excerpts marked as data, not all transcript or external evidence.
- Selection predicate: substantive passing units; at most three windows; optional embedding selection.
- Invalidation or expiry: model drift, budget and deadlines can make result unusable; policy/threshold matters.
- Activation or effect: output feeds grounding-disposition; shadow mode can record judgment without changing body.
- Evidence limits: no observed provider accuracy, calibration quality, receipt durability or complete evidence selection.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected

EPI-RTE-grounding-disposition
Label: Grounding result disposition
Endpoints/progression: probability/coverage/policy → pass, margin_hold, insufficient_context, quarantine or keep on error → reduced page. Owner: deterministic policy reducer. Criterion/domain: thresholded model support probability over selected excerpts, with margin and coverage protection. Computational result can veto a passing unit only in acting mode; shadow keeps it. No human per-unit decision or answer oracle. This is evidence-consuming disposition with an intended use, but blanket acceptance cannot be inferred: several kept states expressly lack support. Scope: additional unsupported-paraphrase removal, not new positive world knowledge. Distinct function from EPI-RTE-grounding-check; no supplied runtime counterpart. SRC-1 src/core/cycle/grounding-decide.ts, implementation.
- Immediate return: original page or quarantined variant; stats distinguish outcomes.
- Later read-back: reduced page goes to repair retention; receipts can support replay, not guaranteed use here.
- Delegated visibility: policy acting mode and calibrated threshold constrain effect.
- Selection predicate: low probability outside margin plus adequate coverage and acting policy permits removal.
- Invalidation or expiry: unavailable answer, no calibration or drift preserves mechanical result; later checks may revisit new content.
- Activation or effect: enforcing unit removal in acting mode, advisory measurement in shadow mode; horizon repaired page and later reads.
- Evidence limits: failure/weak coverage retention is not acceptance; no observed operation or improved quality.

EPI-RTE-repair-retention
Label: Repaired page retention
Endpoints/progression: verified.changed → normalized fences and serialized repaired page → prepareCanonicalProjections and automatic links → derived maintenance transaction/import → later body/chunk consumers. Owner: verifier's maintenance writer. Operational authority: replaces retained body/projections with reduced content; review frontmatter retained separately. Consumer/channel/force/horizon: importer and projected rows enforce the reduced body for subsequent retrieval; later host behavior remains interpretive. This is retention, not lifecycle integration following demonstrated semantic acceptance. Distinct from RT-RTE-capture-write: maintenance reimport of an already-written child page, not capture request admission. SRC-1 src/core/cycle/synthesize-verify.ts, implementation.
- Immediate return: repair stats; errors logged per page.
- Later read-back: repaired bodies and reprojected facts/takes/timeline/links support subsequent consumers; embedding backfill is deferred by noEmbed.
- Delegated visibility: review frontmatter carries rejected units/provenance; full retrieval exclusions not independently audited.
- Selection predicate: writtenRefs grouped by page/transcript, resolved prior, verified.changed.
- Invalidation or expiry: unchanged/missing pages skip; retained quarantine/provenance capped; concurrent managed path incompletely inspected.
- Activation or effect: import and beforeCommit project/link application change retained data when transaction succeeds.

EPI-RTE-fact-consolidation
Label: Fact claim consolidation
Endpoints/progression: eligible fact clusters → strict confidence reducer chooses existing text → source/weight metadata → maintenance submission or local take insertion and consolidation marks. Owner: deterministic consolidate phase; caller starts cycle, no per-claim human approval. Target/domain of selection: cluster representative, not truth of proposition. Guidance is clustering and write-gate policy, not formulated criticism. Open maintenance selection; no expected-answer oracle. Proposed retained change: fact take and contributor marks. Local branch can hold/reject new take, skips retired managed outcomes; full gate/preparer internals remain uninspected. This corrects an overreading of the orchestrator's Sonnet comment, not RT-RTE-maintenance-run's valid driver identity. SRC-1 src/core/cycle/phases/consolidate.ts, implementation.
- Immediate return: counts, preview or promotion result.
- Later read-back: takes and consolidated_into pointers are retained; downstream complete take selection uninspected.

Endpoints/progression: composed answer → configured quote verifier over question and gathered prompt blocks → quote counts and span matches, plus persistable-unit check. Owner: think implementation and deterministic matcher. Target/domain: reproduction of quoted words from prompt evidence, question included; not every answer claim or citation's semantic support. No positive truth oracle. Distinct from RT-RTE-query-read, which supplies evidence rather than authors/checks an answer. SRC-1 src/core/think/index.ts, src/core/cycle/synthesize-verify.ts, implementation.
- Immediate return: checked/raw answers, quote counts, failures and separate persistable candidate.
- Later read-back: inapplicable — transient check outputs; optional save consumers incompletely inspected.
- Delegated visibility: question, pages, takes, graph and trajectory prompt blocks.
- Selection predicate: enabled quote verification, nonempty answer, detected quoted spans; quotes-only persistence checks omit number/decision checks.
- Invalidation or expiry: configuration can disable checking; source prompt changes alter match domain.
- Activation or effect: feeds answer-delivery and conditional persist candidate.
- Evidence limits: no full proposition entailment, source truth or complete citation validation; unchanged unquoted claims may survive.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected

EPI-RTE-answer-delivery
Label: Checked answer delivery
Endpoints/progression: quote result/status → span repair or unverified marker → verb response; compose failure with extractive candidate returns fallback, otherwise typed error. Owner: matcher then synthesize handler. Consumer: requesting agent/operator, through answer plus source slugs, warnings and diagnostics. Force: advisory source-relative text and metadata; horizon current answer, feedback retention separately unassessed. Criterion is response availability and lexical matching, not accepted ampliative truth. Split from EPI-RTE-answer-check because disposition/delivery differs from evaluation. No supplied query-route counterpart for this final-answer variant. SRC-1 src/core/cycle/synthesize-verify.ts, src/core/verbs.ts, src/core/think/index.ts, implementation.
- Immediate return: checked answer, optional raw/quote metadata; extractive fallback or unavailable error on failure branches.
- Later read-back: uninspected — recordThinkAnswer stores feedback metadata, but full retained feedback and consumer path was not traced.
- Delegated visibility: caller receives answer and diagnostics; external agent need not honor unverified marker.
- Selection predicate: status ok versus compose failure, nonempty gathered fallback and configured provider availability.
- Invalidation or expiry: inapplicable — no durable answer withdrawal mechanism inspected in this response route.
- Activation or effect: matched spans repaired; unmatched quoted text loses marks and gets marker rather than automatic total answer rejection.
- Evidence limits: warn-only citation outside gather; no observed caller compliance or answer correctness.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected

EPI-RTE-owner-confirmation
Label: Owner trust confirmation
Endpoints/progression: confirm_memory ref → preview/current binding → source visibility and owner permission or typed token → apply owner confirm → user_confirmed tier. Owner: authorized principal; local interactive human types token, remote connection can carry memory_confirm scope. Do not equate that remote capability with a human examining each claim. Target: named fact/take/page; admission checks authority and state, not supplied evidence truth. Intended use: explicit owner endorsement; semantic criterion and evidence-consuming judgment are not enforced. Proposed change: tier, not proposition; veto on invalid scope, stale/nonlive target or missing confirmation; broader rollback/revert actions not fully traced. Distinct from RT-RTE-mcp-dispatch's general catalog admission. SRC-1 src/core/ops/trust.ts, src/core/trust/owner-actions.ts, src/core/trust/confirm.ts, implementation.
- Immediate return: preview, unchanged status, confirmation refusal or applied owner-action result.
- Later read-back: stored user_confirmed tier supports subsequent trust-labelled reads; exact selection/ranking consequences not fully inspected.
- Delegated visibility: remote source visibility check; tier-raising capability separated from ordinary agent authority.
- Selection predicate: fact/take or source-qualified page ref, live/binding preview, authorized confirmation.
- Invalidation or expiry: owner-actions checks current binding; changed target needs renewed confirmation.
- Activation or effect: symbolic trust promotion permits higher-tier treatment; downstream full force remains bounded to inspected state change.
- Evidence limits: endorsement not infallibility; no mandated evidence criterion, observed user reasoning or deployed grants.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected

EPI-RTE-memory-withdrawal
Label: Memory withdrawal disposition
Endpoints/progression: source-visible fact/ref and reason → durable withdrawal ledger (or distinct supersession expiry) → expiry/body mirror → active fact filtering and canonical fence overlay. Owner: explicit forget caller or owner review accept; computational state checks implement action. Target/domain: continued memory reliance on source/visibility/subject-scoped claim, not evaluation of world truth. Proposed change: withdrawal, with exact hash protection; guidance is caller reason or review anchor. Review acceptance rechecks withdrawn anchor, candidate activity/text; reject refuses pending proposal; ordinary forget enacts withdrawal. No truth oracle. Unlike RT-RTE-capture-write, this changes existing reliance, with durable ledger rather than a new captured page. SRC-1 src/core/facts/forget.ts, src/core/facts/proposal-review.ts, src/core/facts/withdrawal-overlay.ts, src/core/page-state/snapshot.ts, src/core/engine-sql/facts.ts, implementation.
- Immediate return: forget path/status or review accepted, stale, refused, rejected or accepted_no_action result.
- Later read-back: active SQL fact reads omit expired/lapsed rows; snapshot overlays strike withdrawn fence rows or drop purged rows. Original unrelated prose/backups not universally erased.
- Delegated visibility: source and world-only restrictions checked before exposing state; review owner lane differs from remote confirmation surface.
- Selection predicate: fact id/ref; ledger hashes plus visibility and subject; semantic paraphrase expansion uninspected.
- Invalidation or expiry: accepted withdrawal is durable; review refuses undo; supersession differs by not recording withdrawal.
- Activation or effect: enforcing exclusion from inspected active-memory reads and fence overlay; DB-only mirror best-effort but ledger remains.
- Evidence limits: universal semantic equivalence/deletion and every invalidation consumer uninspected. Accepted duplicate verdict without handler may change no merge/link state.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected

EPI-RTE-writeback-evaluation
Label: BrainBench write-back scoring
Endpoints/progression: fixture and sealed gold → production conversation-fact pipeline with gold extractor or budgeted real extractor → stored rows → keyword/entity survival and provenance checks → suite metrics → CLI result file/stdout and optional baseline comparison exit. Owner/evaluator: benchmark procedures; target/domain: fixture gold-relative retention/provenance, real extraction recall/precision only under llm mode. Oracle: fixture gold keyword probes, entity and expected source/session/slug. Deterministic mode injects gold at extractor seam, so it assesses downstream plumbing rather than real semantic extraction. Operating mode: bounded fixture evaluation, not open per-claim admission. Human supplies fixtures/baseline and optional regression justification; software scores. No inspected route from score to automatic production fact acceptance or policy rewrite. Distinct from RT-RTE-maintenance-run's health diagnostic workflow. SRC-1 src/eval/brainbench/metrics/write-back.ts, src/eval/brainbench/harness.ts, src/commands/eval-brainbench.ts, implementation.
- Immediate return: gold failures, survived/provenance counters and aggregated suite metrics/report.
- Later read-back: optional --out and baseline files permit later comparison; deployed CI adoption unobserved.
- Delegated visibility: benchmark fixtures and gold; holdout/harness seam validity not fully inspected.
- Selection predicate: requested suites/harnesses and fixture corpus; each survival row consumed for at most one gold fact.
- Invalidation or expiry: budget exhaustion throws; seed failures invalidate run and refuse baseline update; baseline comparator internals incomplete.
- Activation or effect: CLI report artifact and comparison-derived exit code can gate calling CI; no direct semantic-admission consumer found in inspected scorer/command sections.
- Evidence limits: keyword match not entailment; default golden extractor is not model quality; no scores or causal interventions observed; other suites/CI consumers uninspected.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected

Claims
EPI-CLM-transcript-grounding
Label: Transcript claim grounding
Claimed operation: synthesis output policy requires concrete fidelity, attributable speculation and every claim grounded in transcript. SRC-1 src/core/cycle/synthesize.ts, doctrine/design embedded in executable prompt builder. Distinct narrower claim than RT-CLM-memory-control; this prescribes generated page content, not general cross-agent availability.
- Ground every claim in the transcript. Attribute speculation as speculation ("the user wondered whether..."), and never state a completion state or outcome the transcript does not show.${attributionRules ?
