Tardigrade memory report
Type: agentic-system-analyses/types/agentic-system-memory-report.md
Boundary and evidence
The subject is the memory and working-context behavior of Tardigrade's shipped enclosing runtime at the boundary's frozen commit. Included are current atom conversations and summaries, provider continuations and file references, checkpoint and initial-state recovery, both workspace APIs, deprecated conversation compaction and repair-history projection, CLI inspection, child context separation and prescribed trace-fed source optimization. External provider internals and deployed storage behavior remain outside the captured evidence. No target execution, test run or experiment was performed. Implementation supports wiring; instructions support prescribed procedures, not their exercise or benefit.
All source evidence is SRC-1 from boundary. Direct reads added current durable trajectory/compaction reducers; current compaction and model services; object persistence/resolution; initial-state validation and journal creation; checkpoint codecs; deprecated compaction, continuation replay and message/transcript projections; code spill storage/execution and workspace package; Bun workspace layers; CLI event dispatch/client and chat consumer; server assembly; and contributor hooks. Bounded excerpts of core recovery, Cloudflare objects and code execution supplement supplied runtime findings. Available but uninspected branches are named below, not treated as missing or absent.

Pre-commit runs docs lint for staged Markdown; pre-push runs gate. These inspected hooks do not show conversation-memory writes. No claim about all CI/tool scripts: remaining maintenance automation is uninspected, preventing an exhaustive automation inventory. |
Core ideas
- Retention and model visibility are separate. The journal retains typed work and results; a trajectory projection extracts conversation; compaction substitutes a summary plus suffix at the next model request. Replacing visible context does not establish deletion of the original journal. Recovery checkpoints encode state without being model-written summaries. See MEM-OBJ-trajectory, MEM-OBJ-effect-checkpoint and MEM-RTE-atom-compaction.
- Two kinds of omission have different reload paths. Current compaction clips text and summarizes old messages. The inspected current context offers no pointer-based automatic reload for removed text. Deprecated code spilling instead retains the whole value and emits a preview/ref; the workspace supports model-requested slices/search. A ref is not itself a dereference by the language model. See MEM-RTE-spill-readback.
- The model-visible display is not every retained payload. Compatible assistant continuations can replace ordinary assistant rendering, while file refs resolve to bytes. Neither a textual reasoning field nor filename alone describes what the provider receives. The payload is schema-decoded, not semantically authenticated. See MEM-RTE-content-replay.
- Automatic trace transformation is not evidence of improved capacity. Summaries are automatically written from mixed user/model/tool history and later supplied as user-role text. NPO/GEPA prescribe a different trace-to-prompt/source update loop, with candidate identity and evaluation records. Neither summary retention nor these instructions establish successful learning. See MEM-RTE-atom-compaction and annotation on RT-RTE-optimization-guidance.

Operative objects
MEM-OBJ-trajectory
Label: Current trajectory projection
Source-native identity: TrajectoryState, durable atom agent.trajectory, and messages projection. Form: symbolic turn/model attribution and role/tool-call fields containing natural-language messages; assistant continuation is a separate operative payload below. Substrate: durable atom state in memory, reconstructable from accepted journal events and eligible checkpoint state. Lineage: TurnRequested becomes user content; inference-purpose ModelReturned adds assistant text/calls only when matched to a model invocation; ToolReturned joins its owning call, using errors or text/file content. Failed/settled turns remove outstanding model attribution rather than deleting already accumulated entries. Consumer: compact then inference; turn IDs are omitted by messages. This is a derived conversation view, not another name for RT-OBJ-journal, which also holds lifecycle/work records. SRC-1, packages/agent/src/atoms/durable/trajectory.ts.

packages/agent/src/atoms/durable/trajectory.ts
MEM-OBJ-compaction-state
Label: Current durable compaction state
Source-native identity: CompactionState, durable atom agent.compaction.state. Form: natural-language summary, symbolic through, attempts, pending call identity, failure and origin position. Substrate: reducer state derived from journaled compaction calls/returns/failures and turn settlement, eligible for durable checkpoints. It is distinct from RT-OBJ-journal: a derived selector/result state, not the generic record container. Summary provenance is mixed conversation history plus prior summary, generated by the configured model; reasons, usage and continuation can exist in the source return event but the compaction reducer adopts only event.text as summary content. Later inference consumes that text, not a separate justification ledger. Source truth and fidelity are not checked by adoption. MEM-OBJ-provider-continuation
Label: Provider-compatible assistant continuation
Part of: RT-OBJ-journal
Source-native identity: continuation on model-return/assistant records, with provider/protocol/model and JSON payload. Form: symbolic provider-compatible prompt serialization, potentially containing opaque provider reasoning/state; accompanying natural-language reasoning is not a complete readable surrogate. Substrate: return events, trajectory state and checkpoints; provider internals external. Current standard adapter creates it when response reasoning parts are present. Consumer: current model request builder or deprecated replayOf, which matches provider/protocol/model and decodes payload to prompt content. This event part has different interpretation and omission rules from ordinary text in the parent journal. Parameters and exact provider weights are not asserted; see RT-CMP-model. SRC-1, packages/agent/src/services/model.ts, packages/deprecated/agent/src/model/execution/continuation.ts.

MEM-OBJ-content-parts
Label: Stored content parts and attachment bytes
Source-native identity: ContentPart, StoredToolResult, ObjectRef, ObjectStorage. Form: natural-language text, symbolic file metadata/hash references, and opaque file bytes whose internal representational form depends on the file; no embedding representation inferred. Substrate: text and refs in events, file bytes in caller-bound object backend. Lineage: incoming bytes can be persisted; an already supplied object ref is carried through without a new put. Later selected files are fetched and verified by makeObjectStorage; media type/filename are not knowledge validation. Consumer: model request file parts, including legacy summary attachment resolution. Distinct from RT-OBJ-journal because the byte store is not simply embedded journal content, and from MEM-OBJ-provider-continuation because resolution yields file bytes rather than assistant prompt replay. Object/backend eviction and complete deployed attachment ingress are uninspected. SRC-1, packages/model/src/object/storage.ts, packages/model/src/object/tool-result.ts, packages/agent/src/services/model.ts, packages/deprecated/agent/src/component/compact/index.ts.

MEM-OBJ-effect-checkpoint
Label: Encoded effect checkpoint
Part of: RT-OBJ-journal
Source-native identity: EffectCheckpoint, encoded version 3 with position, durable named states and stored operations. Form: symbolic JSON/UTF-8 bytes, including embedded text from durable state; not model-generated prose compression. Substrate: journal checkpoint payload/chunks and digest. Consumer: recovery decoder/atom seed and replay. Code validates positions, codecs/operation shapes, duplicate effect refs, lifecycle consistency, pending promises and cancellation-input restrictions. The decoder can retain cleanup lifecycle information; checkpointing is not equivalent to forgetting a cancelled effect. State-schema compatibility and external side-effect safety remain conditional. This separates the checkpoint part from the parent journal, not a duplicate of RT-CLM-request-before-execution. SRC-1, packages/core/src/services/checkpoint.ts, packages/core/src/initialise.ts; parent supplies recovery passages.

MEM-OBJ-workspace-text
Label: Current named workspace text
Source-native identity: Workspace key/string values, memoryWorkspace. Form: natural-language or caller-defined text indexed by symbolic keys; meaning is not interpreted at write time. Substrate: supplied service; default example's memory layer is a fresh Map per layer construction, not persistent journal storage. Lineage: explicit write replaces a key; read/list provide bounded results. Consumers: configured library tools and later model requests through tool returns. No counterpart after comparison with RT-OBJ-journal: workspace values are independently stored and can disappear while journaled responses remain. Distinct from legacy spilled values below. SRC-1, packages/libraries/src/workspace.ts, packages/examples/services.ts.

packages/libraries/src/workspace.ts
MEM-OBJ-spill-values
Label: Legacy spilled values and ref manifest
Source-native identity: spill JSON keyed by ref, ws:refs manifest, pointer { tmp, size, preview, note }. Form: symbolic JSON/pointers and raw returned content, sometimes natural language; preview is not a derived semantic memory or complete value. Substrate: Effect KeyValueStore; inspected Bun layer uses SQL storage for values/manifest; optional SQL scratch surface is separately bound. Lineage: code/package results can be bounded into pointers. The directly inspected final-code writer stores full JSON then emits the pointer. Consumer: resumed code hydrates recorded package returns; model can request workspace slices or substring search. Manifest is access metadata, not an authoritative enumeration of content: malformed manifest decodes to empty and a known ref remains independently reachable. Distinct from RT-OBJ-journal and MEM-OBJ-workspace-text: the journal can contain only the preview/ref, and this API is a spill reader rather than the current named-text read/write library. SRC-1, packages/code/src/storage/store.ts, packages/code/src/execution/code.ts, platform/bun/src/workspace.ts.

MEM-OBJ-compaction-completed
Label: Legacy conversation summary checkpoint
Source-native identity: CompactionCompleted, keepFrom and summary, exposed through checkpointOf. Form: natural-language summary and symbolic event boundary/model/time/policy metadata; not the core effect checkpoint. Substrate: legacy event log and projected conversation view. Lineage: previous summary plus selected projected events/attachments, model completion, committed event. Consumer: message renderer prepends summary and renders suffix; compactor can consume summary again. No counterpart after comparison with RT-OBJ-journal: that record describes current core journal machinery, not this legacy summary event. Closest supplied route RT-RTE-legacy-server mentions compaction without declaring its retained result. SRC-1, packages/deprecated/agent/src/component/compact/context.ts, packages/deprecated/agent/src/component/compact/index.ts.

Routes
MEM-RTE-atom-compaction
Label: Automatic atom context compaction
Endpoints/progression: trajectory → clipped rendered messages → size/boundary selector → Summarize model act → accepted summary/through state → later inference context. Owner: actor author composes compact; code selects and adopts; configured model proposes summary. This is the reusable context transformation within RT-RTE-bun-message, not a replacement invocation record; it also applies to other composed atom actors. SRC-1, packages/agent/src/atoms/compact.ts, packages/agent/src/atoms/durable/compaction.ts, packages/agent/src/services/model.ts.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: context view ready, configuring, compacting or failed; accepted call completion emits a model-return event and advances summary boundary.
- Later read-back: code automatically supplies latest summary as a user message plus retained rendered suffix at later inference; next compaction uses previous summary plus newly removed prefix.
- Delegated visibility: summarizer receives JSON text of prior summary and selected rendered messages, no tools; inference receives summary and tail, not a separate summary reasoning/continuation record.
- Selection predicate: configured model window times default triggerRatio 0.8, retainRatio 0.5; serialized length / charsPerToken 4 plus 1,200 estimated tokens per image. Tail cut requires valid user or tool-call boundary and no pending tool pair. Default user/tool limits are 262,144/10,000 tokens, applied per text part; assistant messages are not clipped.
- Invalidation or expiry: a successful later summary replaces earlier summary/through; failure retains previous summary and sets failure; TurnSettled clears failure. Text clipping removes middles from the rendered view, not from trajectory storage.
- Activation or effect: implemented push of trace-derived text into a later model request; actual model dependence, fidelity and benefit unobserved. No universal context-size bound: missing boundaries/pending tools can bypass summary.
- Evidence limits: estimates do not count all provider-rendered bytes or system/tool overhead; files are not sent as file parts in this current JSON summary brief; image estimates do not prove attachment understanding.
Admission: open conversation operation, not a scored optimization experiment. Fixed prompt asks to preserve facts/preferences/unfinished work and treat conversation as data. Model writes text; standard summarize service rejects empty text and failures; reducer requires matching pending call. No factual oracle, human per-summary approval or content-specific veto is wired here. Failure prevents advancement; previous events permit reconstruction, but no operator summary-undo API was established. Reasons may be recorded with model return but are not adopted into summary state. Trace origin is mixed external user, model and tool material, recursively including prior generated summaries; a trust instruction is not enforced source authentication.

MEM-RTE-content-replay
Label: Selected continuation and file replay
Endpoints/progression: selected conversation messages → file-object resolution and assistant continuation identity check → provider prompt. Owner: model adapter and storage implementation; no new user retrieval request is necessary once files/continuations are selected by context. Distinct from broader RT-RTE-bun-message: this transformation determines actual provider input, including an alternative to plain text rendering. SRC-1, packages/agent/src/services/model.ts, packages/model/src/object/storage.ts, packages/deprecated/agent/src/model/execution/continuation.ts.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: resolved prompt parts or missing-service/object, integrity or schema failure.
- Later read-back: retained assistant continuation can be replayed on a later matching-model request; retained file refs resolve to bytes for selected user/tool messages.
- Delegated visibility: provider receives decoded continuation messages or fallback assistant text/tool calls and selected file bytes; ordinary reasoning display alone does not identify full replay input.
- Selection predicate: continuation provider/protocol/model must match current request; otherwise ordinary assistant rendering is used. File loading follows selected user/tool content, deduplicated by object key; no semantic relevance query.
- Invalidation or expiry: model identity mismatch disables continuation replay, not deletion; removed context is not loaded through this path. Missing/damaged objects cause failure rather than summary restoration.
- Activation or effect: code can substitute serialized assistant messages and supply resolved bytes; actual effect on model behavior remains unobserved.
- Evidence limits: opaque provider content and custom Model service behavior prevent claims of complete text-only context, exact token bounds or semantic payload validation.

MEM-RTE-state-adoption
Label: Fresh thread state adoption
Endpoints/progression: caller supplies named encoded state → registered destination codecs validate → fresh thread journal records StateInitialised → seed map initializes durable atoms → later graph evaluation/recovery. Owner: caller/application for conversion, core/host for admission. Distinct from RT-RTE-artifact-admission, which imports code, and from recovery in RT-CLM-request-before-execution, which reloads the same history. SRC-1, packages/core/src/runtime/initialisation.ts, packages/core/src/initialise.ts, packages/core/src/services/journal/thread.ts; migration guidance is doctrine/design in skills/tardigrade/references/state-and-compatibility.md.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: adopted event or invalid name/schema/freshness/conflicting lineage error; host creation commits creation and optional seed event together.
- Later read-back: initialStateSeed prefers checkpoint durable state; without checkpoint it finds StateInitialised after optional ThreadCreated and subsequent events fold over that seed.
- Delegated visibility: destination atoms receive selected encoded values; optional source JSON is provenance, not an automatic source-export or rationale reader.
- Selection predicate: explicit caller names matched to registered destination codecs; no automatic semantic migration or extraction from an old log.
- Invalidation or expiry: identical standalone initialization retry returns; incompatible existing history rejects; later checkpoints seed subsequent recovery. No cross-system rollback is shown.
- Activation or effect: adopted state can enable destination graph proposals, including changed conversation/summary state if those atoms are registered; no exercised migration supplied.
- Evidence limits: generic caller is not evidence of human authorship/approval. Converter correctness, initial content origin and preservation of reasons remain caller-specific; pending effects/handles/replies are excluded by prescribed migration procedure, not inferred transferred.
This is an explicit state-admission operation, not an answer-scored experiment. Caller proposes and can withhold state; code can reject shape/name/history conflicts but does not check truth or an improvement oracle. Guidance prescribes a settled source prefix, explicit conversion, successful destination creation before cutover. What persists is supplied encoded state and optional provenance; omitted atoms use defaults. Source export and old-to-new meaning remain external application responsibilities within this API's contract.

MEM-RTE-text-workspace
Label: Named text write and retrieval
Endpoints/progression: configured model tool or library caller → workspace write/read/list → bound Workspace service → tool result → subsequent inference. Owner: caller chooses key/content and retrieval; library bounds returned text/list. Distinct storage mechanism within ordinary tool work in RT-RTE-bun-message; wrapper admission remains composition-specific as RT-RTE-governed-tools states. SRC-1, packages/libraries/src/workspace.ts, packages/examples/services.ts.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: write key/character count; read sliced value/size/truncation; list paginated sorted keys; unknown key or invalid offset errors.
- Later read-back: model-requested read by key/offset or list after cursor returns retained text in tool content; retention lasts only as long as configured service state survives.
- Delegated visibility: service receives exact submitted string; model sees bounded text/page in later context, further subject to context clipping/compaction.
- Selection predicate: exact key/offset, lexical list cursor; defaults maxChars 32,768 and maxEntries 100. This is targeted key lookup, not relevance retrieval.
- Invalidation or expiry: write replaces existing value; memoryWorkspace loses values with layer lifetime. No delete operation is in this inspected library definition; custom storage lifecycle uninspected.
- Activation or effect: explicit text can reach later tool consumer/model invocation; no observed changed behavior or multi-session durability.
- Evidence limits: write semantics do not imply automatic trace learning or factual curation; arbitrary stored string provenance is unresolved until an actual caller is known.
Admission: open tool calls, schema/service acceptance, optional composed permission/budget veto; no per-content human approval or answer oracle established. Replacement is a write, not editorial validation. Earlier journaled responses may survive a replacement but no versioned workspace undo is exposed here.

MEM-RTE-spill-readback
Label: Legacy spill hydration and workspace retrieval
Endpoints/progression: oversized code result → full JSON store plus preview/ref → model-visible result → requested workspace read/grep; separately recorded package return ref → resumed code hydration. Owner: code spill policy controls automatic eviction; foreground model selects workspace queries; platform binds storage and optional SQL. This is the concrete retained-result/reload mechanism within RT-RTE-legacy-server, distinct from current RT-RTE-code-execution; the spill implementation must not be attributed wholesale to current code mode. SRC-1, packages/code/src/execution/code.ts, packages/code/src/storage/store.ts, packages/code/src/package/workspace.ts, apps/server/src/actor.ts, platform/bun/src/workspace.ts.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: bounded code result pointer with preview; workspace read returns slice/whole size, grep returns match refs/offset/context; optional SQL returns bounded rows or errors.
- Later read-back: code replay hydrates recorded package-return refs, falling back to recorded result when bytes are absent; model-requested workspace slices/search can restore parts to later context. Raw spill is retention, not semantic summary.
- Delegated visibility: model initially receives preview/ref/note; workspace readers see stored whole value internally but return only selected slices/matches; resumed code can receive hydrated full JSON.
- Selection predicate: default spillBytes 8,192 compares JSON string length, previewChars 500; read ref/offset/length capped at 32,768 characters; substring grep optional ref with default 200-character context and 50 matches. SQL exists only when runner supplied; Bun SQL default bounds 200 rows/32,768 serialized characters.
- Invalidation or expiry: ref overwrite and backend lifetime govern storage; malformed manifest can hide discovery without deleting values. Unavailable known ref gives reader error; replay may fall back to preview-side result. No spill garbage-collection route was established by inspected store/package code.
- Activation or effect: automatic context-size reduction plus implemented on-demand recovery; no observed retrieval success, behavior dependence or benefit.
- Evidence limits: inspected final-code spill writer and package-return hydration do not enumerate every package spill producer. Backend transaction coupling, deployed retention and other hosts' equivalence remain uninspected.
Admission is computational thresholding for raw values, not a model/human content-quality decision. Workspace read/grep only select. Optional SQL can mutate scratch tables under platform binding; the generic package passes supplied query to runner, without a semantic admission oracle or per-query human gate. Custom SQL can reach a different database; the Bun source explicitly distinguishes spill values in log database from the default separate scratch SQL surface. Do not mistake the latter for automatic access to the entire journal. No automatic reinjection of all spilled values or reasons is shown.

MEM-RTE-legacy-compaction
Label: Legacy projected-history compaction
Endpoints/progression: raw legacy events → repair-history projection → conversation policy/cut → prior summary plus selected events/attachments → summarizer → CompactionCompleted → user-role summary and suffix for later inference. Owner: component proposes complete-boundary cuts, parent inference chooses compaction work, model writes summary, code checks completion. Distinct implementation from MEM-RTE-atom-compaction, elaborating RT-RTE-legacy-server. SRC-1, packages/deprecated/agent/src/component/compact/index.ts, context.ts, model.ts, packages/deprecated/agent/src/projection/messages.ts, packages/deprecated/agent/src/projection/transcript.ts.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: optional compaction proposal or no cut; summarizer yields committed summary event only on acceptable completion, otherwise failure.
- Later read-back: checkpointOf chooses latest summary/boundary; renderer prepends Summary of earlier work as user content and renders retained suffix. A still-open head before the cut is separately included. Next summary incorporates previous summary.
- Delegated visibility: summary brief renders selected events into lines, clips tool arguments/results and rejection feedback to summaryLineCap default 200, and resolves attached user content to actual file prompt parts. Later inference does not receive every original event.
- Selection predicate: complete round/no unanswered call, advancing message/tool boundary, rendered weights and configured ratios; current model capacity informs parent selection, summarizer model may be independently selected. Defaults include messageRenderCap 12,000, resultRenderCap 6,000, file estimate 1,200, trigger/retain 0.8/0.5.
- Invalidation or expiry: last committed summary replaces previous visible summary; missing keepFrom identity resolves to zero, preserving whole projected history for recutting. Projectable rejection/retry events can be hidden on TurnCompleted or OutputRepaired; raw event storage is not deleted by this projection.
- Activation or effect: implemented model context replacement and repair-history omission; no observed semantic preservation, actual verdict correctness or improvement.
- Evidence limits: unlike current compaction, legacy summarizer explicitly rejects tool calls and noncompleted/blank responses; API generations do not share an identical validation contract. Repair mode controls what disappears, so not all rejected output is universally forgotten.
Admission: open conversation operation, fixed brief requesting compact paragraph/future-needed facts. Model proposes; parent/code can defer/reject; no human summary approval or factual oracle shown. Summary prompt requesting every fact is not completeness evidence. Projected rejection/errors/feedback may be in a summary when still visible; hidden attempts are omitted before both compaction and later message rendering. A summary is not a structured criticism archive, and the code does not guarantee retaining why every prior decision was made. Failed summaries do not produce a new checkpoint in the inspected transition.

MEM-RTE-event-inspection
Label: Operator event inspection
Endpoints/progression: tdg events explicit thread/options → protocol-selecting client → recorded event endpoint → filtered/limited rows → JSON or display table. Owner: operator/caller selects; CLI code renders. Distinct from model context consumption and from the immediate terminal output in RT-RTE-bun-message. SRC-1, apps/cli/src/commands.ts, apps/cli/src/client.ts; chat history display is separately implemented in packages/apps/cli/src/chat.ts.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: printed event rows, not an inference or memory-edit request.
- Later read-back: later explicit CLI invocation reads retained thread events by thread and sequence; material can inform an operator or optimizing agent, but no automatic prompt promotion follows from display.
- Delegated visibility: JSON preserves returned rows; table width can shorten display. Chat consumer separately derives settlement output from local history and subscribes to new message projection.
- Selection predicate: thread, after sequence, optional event types/limit; modern client first requests after cursor then filters/slices; server protocol metadata chooses modern or legacy API.
- Invalidation or expiry: backing journal/thread lifecycle controls availability; repeated inspection does not mutate events. Server pagination can bound what one call sees.
- Activation or effect: implemented inspection delivery only; no evidence it changed subsequent agent actions.
- Evidence limits: deprecated renderer truncation pointer names logs.events, but that text alone does not establish a registered model-facing logs tool in the inspected server assembly. CLI events is an actual different consumer route, not proof of that advertised reload wiring.

Storage encodes both raw inputs/outcomes and derived-summary events; inference consumes projections, not the generic journal byte stream. Content and access metadata differ: invocation refs, positions/digests and checkpoint chunk ordinals support recovery/selection, not natural-language knowledge. The SQL journal's checkpoint chunks are replaced on checkpoint append; that replacement is not deletion of old conversation events. Core searches show checkpoint-plus-suffix recovery, while checkpoint decoder preserves compatible durable states and operation/cleanup records. Pending inputs are recovery machinery, not a retrieved knowledge corpus. Supplied record and RT-CLM-request-before-execution retain passages for atomic commit and recovery. Direct SRC-1 additions: packages/core/src/services/checkpoint.ts, packages/core/src/initialise.ts; bounded searches in packages/core/src/runtime/execution.ts, packages/platform/src/shared/sql-journal.ts.
On RT-RTE-child-invocation
Working-context control is selected message/budget into child, result/inbox notification out; parent transcript inheritance is not demonstrated. This keeps child internal conversation/tool history outside the parent's immediate window. It resembles a separate frame with selected arguments and escaping return, but asynchronous handles and separately retained child journals may outlive the call, so frame destruction is not a claim about storage deletion. Supplied record establishes the route and local-handle scope limit; cross-host retention depends on configured Actor service. No additional child-memory deployment claim is made.
On RT-RTE-code-execution
Current code-mode recorded ordinal method results are raw execution-recovery memory, read by resumed evaluation before dispatch, not a learned summary. Direct SRC-1, packages/agent/src/services/code-mode.ts, confirms return-value equality against content-result methods can preserve stored-content parts rather than only stringifying them. This requires distinguishing file refs/content from readable code logs. Method arguments/outcomes and ambient seed/time drive replay checks. Cancellation cancels outstanding calls through owning context; it is not an undo of already returned external effects or a purge of recorded experience. Legacy spill machinery in MEM-RTE-spill-readback must not silently extend this current route.
On RT-BAP-model-instructions
Derived summary reaches the inference consumer as user-role natural-language context, while static system instructions are separate. Delivered summary can influence interpretation but has no deterministic truth authority; execution gates remain code. Compatible assistant continuations instead supply serialized prompt content and can bypass ordinary visible assistant rendering. Exact provider behavior is uninspected. SRC-1, packages/agent/src/atoms/compact.ts, packages/agent/src/services/model.ts; MEM-RTE-content-replay retains the replay passage.
On RT-RTE-optimization-guidance
This is the supplied trace-to-durable-source pathway, not another compaction algorithm. Prescribed retained parts include prompt/source versions, parent/diff/digest, evaluation scores/reasons and thread IDs; later teacher/optimizer consumes selected feedback, and accepted actor text/code can affect later sessions through source build/admission. Human authority is user-scoped authorization and thresholds, not demonstrated per-candidate textual approval. No concrete saved candidate or rationale reader was supplied beyond the procedure. The record's NPO feedback-window and GEPA promotion passages support this annotation; source evidence layer is doctrine/design (SRC-1, skills/tardigrade/references/npo.md, skills/tardigrade/references/gepa.md). Raw journal retention alone does not establish this transformation, its exercise or improved capacity. Theory-builder/learning/self-improvement assessments remain independently bounded as in the supplied record.
Write side
- Acquisition and projection: journal admission records user requests, model/tool returns and lifecycle. Trajectory then selects role-bearing entries; content bytes may be stored separately. Schema/identity checks and method/executor admission are computational, not evidence of human approval of each retained item. Initial user authorship can be external human or software; specific callers are not supplied. See MEM-OBJ-trajectory and MEM-OBJ-content-parts.
- Automatic trace-derived write: current compaction transforms rendered mixed history into accepted summary state. Later summarization recursively transforms prior derived summary. The standard empty-summary rejection and matching call check do not validate truth, preservation of reasons or resistance to malicious source text. Legacy transformation has different completion checks and attachment handling. These are qualifying retained trace-derived writes because later inference receives their result, not because they improve a score. See MEM-RTE-atom-compaction, MEM-RTE-legacy-compaction.
- Maintenance, rejection and withdrawal: clipping changes views; repair-history filtering hides selected provisional rejection/feedback entries; compaction advances a boundary and replaces visible summary. These operations do not by themselves erase raw events. Current failed compaction keeps old state and blocks readiness until settlement clears failure. Legacy summary rejection produces no new completion. Checkpoints replace stored restoration snapshots while preserving the distinction from semantic summaries. No universal erasure or rollback of externally executed effects is established. See both compaction routes and MEM-OBJ-effect-checkpoint.
- Material editing/adoption: current workspace write replaces arbitrary text with no meaning check; legacy optional SQL can create/update scratch structures, while spill stores raw values under automatic thresholds. State initialization admits explicitly converted encoded state through codecs, not source replay inference. Unknown initial content provenance does not erase the known subsequent transformation/adoption rules. See MEM-RTE-text-workspace, MEM-RTE-spill-readback, MEM-RTE-state-adoption.
- Evaluation and source promotion: supplied optimization guidance prescribes retaining reasons and candidate lineage and using them in later rounds; source-artifact admission is a separate structural/integrity gate. No completed evaluation-to-installed-prompt-to-later-behavior chain was supplied. The source hooks inspected run lint/gate, not a demonstrated conversation-to-prompt writer. See annotations on optimization and RT-RTE-artifact-admission.
Read-back
Automatic current push uses window estimate and safe message boundaries to select summary plus tail at inference time. The selector uses accumulated content and compaction state, not a model-requested relevance query. It preferentially clips user/tool text and removes older prefix messages; assistant continuations can remain in the tail. A summary and tail are by-value input, not live references to all omitted history. Current compaction's marker is not an implemented automatic reload channel. See MEM-RTE-atom-compaction.
File/object resolution and continuation replay are subordinate transformations after message selection, and can change what the provider actually receives. The current size estimator measures serialized messages rather than the final compatible continuation expansion or full byte attachment rendering. Therefore context estimates are not hard provider token guarantees. Legacy compaction instead resolves files into the summarizer prompt. See MEM-RTE-content-replay and MEM-RTE-legacy-compaction.
Pull routes are concrete: current workspace uses exact key plus offset; legacy workspace uses ref slices or substring matches across retained spills. A named stored value with only an unspecified hypothetical caller would establish only storage capacity; here registered library/package methods and shipped actors establish callable retrieval paths into tool returns, though actual invocation remains unobserved. A bare spill note in a scope without a reader would not establish that path. Optional SQL is construction-time capability, not universally exposed. See MEM-RTE-text-workspace, MEM-RTE-spill-readback.
Recovery consumers differ from language-model consumers. Code execution reuses recorded outcomes; runtime checkpoint/seed readers reconstruct atom and operation state; CLI reads rows for an operator. These can affect scheduling/result identity without interpreting content as advice. Child context separation excludes child internals from parent input unless returned through selected messages/results. See MEM-RTE-state-adoption, MEM-RTE-event-inspection and annotations on journal, code and children.
Integration issues
- Current summary acceptance is weaker than legacy acceptance. No supplied runtime fact needs reversal, but its generic phrase about a no-tool summary request must not become a claim that current summarize validates absence of returned calls. Current request offers no tools and summarize checks nonempty text; legacy explicitly rejects tool-call parts and incomplete finish. Consequence: keep validation contracts separate. SRC-1,
packages/agent/src/services/model.ts,packages/deprecated/agent/src/component/compact/model.ts; MEM-RTE-atom-compaction, MEM-RTE-legacy-compaction, RT-RTE-bun-message. - Spill generation identity matters. Legacy spilling and workspace hydration are not the current code-mode route. Current code mode records ordinal method outcomes and can preserve stored-content results. Consequence: no merged claim that every execute result is spilled identically. MEM-RTE-spill-readback, annotation on RT-RTE-code-execution; SRC-1,
packages/code/src/execution/code.ts,packages/agent/src/services/code-mode.ts. Exact package-spill writer coverage and complete host binding parity remain uninspected, limiting system-wide enumeration, not the positive witnessed route. - Advertised full-message reload remains unresolved. Legacy text truncation tells the model to use logs.events, while inspected built-in server registers agents/workspace/files/fetch rather than showing that tool. Actual tdg events is operator inspection, not automatic model reload. Consequence: do not infer universally reloadable truncated messages. MEM-RTE-event-inspection, RT-RTE-legacy-server; SRC-1,
packages/deprecated/agent/src/projection/messages.ts,apps/server/src/actor.ts,apps/cli/src/commands.ts. Other custom assemblies may supply such a consumer; not inspected. - Repair filtering needs epistemic linkage, not invented verdict authority. The inspected projection hides designated attempts after repair/completion and feeds both rendering and compaction. The producer's semantic correctness and exact projectable-mode policy remain uninspected here. Consequence: retain visibility transformation without treating rejected output as proven false or all rejection reasons as permanently available. MEM-RTE-legacy-compaction; SRC-1,
packages/deprecated/agent/src/projection/transcript.ts,packages/deprecated/agent/src/projection/messages.ts. - No duplicate declarations intended. Checkpoint and continuation are explicit parts of RT-OBJ-journal. Trajectory and summary states are derived projections, not aliases for it; legacy summary and spill storage are distinct implementations. New routes elaborate reusable transformations or consumers, not replacements for supplied broad invocation routes. Optimization, children and current code execution receive annotations rather than competing declarations. No supersession proposed.
- Opaque/custom paths bound completeness. Provider payload semantics, custom model/storage/service implementations, full Cloudflare/legacy backup handling and remaining CI/maintenance tooling were not exhaustively inspected. This prevents universal claims about retention duration, erasure, compatibility, full context bounds and trace-learning automation. Known current/legacy transformations remain source-supported. Limitations and checks
The checkout HEAD was rechecked as 1b9f1e5760d1d4d4a63eb1f87af9e5a2341de7e8 and git status was clean. The boundary source identity, run-id and reviewed-boundary were copied exactly. Method identity is the supplied prompt, job, member types, collection and shared records/worker contracts; all were read completely, including the bounded runtime and records ranges. No peer analysis was read beyond supplied boundary/runtime and no prior review, target execution, dependency installation or outside source was used.
The coverage table distinguishes direct reads from supplied findings and unresolved available branches. No runtime observation supports summary fidelity, attachment understanding, storage durability, exercised optimization, successful learning or causal benefit. No bounded absence is declared from search misses. Implementation of removal/selection does not prove semantic correctness, and model delivery does not prove compliance.
Deterministic validation: the required validate-output command passed with “Member content check passes; invocation residue not checked.” It establishes checked form and quotation occurrence, not semantic acceptance or claim support.
