Basic Memory runtime report
Type: agentic-system-analyses/types/agentic-system-runtime-report.md
Runtime account
Basic Memory supplies persistent knowledge operations to an enclosing assistant. In the inspected ordinary path, the assistant chooses a tool call; Basic Memory routes it, admits a structured note mutation, returns an accepted result and runs deferred file/index work. It does not thereby own the assistant's next reasoning step. A shipped Pi extension additionally decides when to capture session text and inject selected checkpoints. These are distinct loops, with different principals and gates (RT-RTE-note-write, RT-RTE-note-materialization, RT-RTE-context-build, RT-RTE-pi-checkpoint, RT-RTE-hook-checkpoint). All source findings below use SRC-1 at the boundary's pin. They are implementation or doctrine/design evidence, not observed operation. No target program, test, example or provider was executed.
Ordinary invocation and state/effect boundaries
The boundary establishes the basic-memory/bm CLI entry points and MCP startup. The ordinary write traced here begins with an enclosing caller invoking MCP write_note. A CLI bm tool write-note also imports that same tool, supplies piped content if needed, requests JSON and runs it with cleanup. The tool resolves the project, normalizes and checks the directory, combines metadata and tags, constructs an Entity, and calls KnowledgeClient.write_note. That client posts a typed WriteNoteRequest to /v2/projects/{project_id}/knowledge/write. Identity is not just title: the service first looks up the exact file path, uses stable external IDs for mutation, and only uses retained permalink candidates to report a moved target when no note owns the requested path. See RT-RTE-note-write (SRC-1, src/basic_memory/cli/commands/tool.py, src/basic_memory/mcp/tools/write_note.py, src/basic_memory/mcp/clients/knowledge.py, src/basic_memory/api/v2/routers/note_write_router.py, src/basic_memory/services/note_content_writes.py).
The next-step owner becomes deterministic Python code, not a generative model. Accepted-note preparation and mutation runners persist the accepted snapshot inside a service-owned database transaction; the in-transaction runtime hook can reject by raising. Post-commit search/graph publication and cache invalidation are distinct from acceptance. The router then hands the change to the materialization provider and returns a discriminated created/updated/refusal response. The MCP layer formats it as text or JSON and may append a similar-note advisory after creation. That advisory does not merge or replace notes. The caller retains the decision about what to do next (SRC-1, src/basic_memory/services/note_content_writes.py, src/basic_memory/indexing/accepted_note_mutation_runner.py, src/basic_memory/mcp/tools/write_note.py).

src/basic_memory/services/note_content_writes.py:695-695
Production local materialization is asynchronous. Accepted DB content, the Markdown file, graph/search rows and embeddings have different completion points. A bounded worker pool hashes (project_id, entity_id) to one worker queue, serializing that note's jobs within the process. Preflight checks the accepted version, the writer checks existing bytes, publication records status, and successful writes are indexed before vector work is queued separately. Graceful CLI cleanup drains materialization, vectors and other background work before database shutdown. MCP lifespan also drains at shutdown. Startup recovery code re-drives stuck pending/writing/failed rows; an already-correct file can complete publication without rewriting it. These mechanisms support a recovery protocol, not a proof of crash durability or cross-process serial execution (RT-RTE-note-materialization; SRC-1, src/basic_memory/index/note_content_materialization.py, src/basic_memory/indexing/note_materialization_runner.py, src/basic_memory/runtime/note_materialization.py, src/basic_memory/cli/commands/command_utils.py, src/basic_memory/mcp/server.py).
Four forcing cases and guarantee coverage
- Overwrite and stale revisions. The MCP layer chooses explicit overwrite over the configured default; the API/service owns actual path conflict policy. With overwrite false, an occupied path returns
AlreadyExists. With overwrite true, replacement can be unconditional; a supplied checksum makes it conditional. The mutation runner checks the locked accepted row, but its collaboration-relay source branch can supersede a mismatching revision if the previous head is itself relay-origin or is already synced to storage. This is a concrete counterexample to a universal checksum-rejection claim. Direct CRUD PUT/PATCH routes also call mutation services and materialization, but need not pass through the path-addressed tool's create-only guard. Filesystem authors are another admission path, outside that guard. Owner: mutation service/runners. Strength: protocol, with scoped conditional checks rather than universal prevention of replacement. Required external contract: database transaction/locking behavior, correct actor/source assignment and, for the relay exception, the stated storage-version contract. Implementation conclusion status: wired. Operation conclusion status: uninspected (SRC-1,src/basic_memory/mcp/tools/write_note.py,src/basic_memory/services/note_content_writes.py,src/basic_memory/indexing/accepted_note_mutation_runner.py,src/basic_memory/api/v2/routers/knowledge_router.py).
relay_supersede = request.source == NOTE_SOURCE_COLLABORATION_RELAY and ( current_note_content.last_source == NOTE_SOURCE_COLLABORATION_RELAY or current_head_in_storage ) if not relay_supersede: reject_stale_base_checksum(current_db_checksum=current_note_content.db_checksum) ---
src/basic_memory/indexing/accepted_note_mutation_runner.py
- Accepted does not mean file/index/vector completion. Test mode explicitly runs materialization inline; production schedules it and returns accepted content. A storage conflict publishes
external_change_detected, and other failures publishfailedthen propagate to logging/worker handling. Owner: local materialization provider and runner. Strength: protocol/best-effort recovery; no demonstrated availability guarantee. Covered: inspected local accepted-note path, queue drain and recovery functions. Alternate paths: inline test mode, direct file edits and cloud-injected providers; these do not inherit local FIFO scheduling. Required external contract: continued event-loop execution or graceful drain, functioning storage/DB, recovery wiring and correct dependency injection. Implementation conclusion status: wired. Operation conclusion status: uninspected (SRC-1,src/basic_memory/index/note_content_materialization.py,src/basic_memory/indexing/note_materialization_runner.py).

src/basic_memory/index/note_content_materialization.py
- Pi automation trust is not an all-write approval gate. Automatic recall, capture and MCP registration require an explicit project mapping and
BASIC_MEMORY_PI_TRUST_WORKSPACE=1. The model-facingbm_capturetool also enforces that predicate. The human commandbm-capturerequires valid config and a project mapping but not that trust variable. The extension spawns the configured binary with argv/stdin; this is an executable capability, not a sandbox. Owner: Pi extension handlers. Strength: policy enforced by branch predicates on those handlers. Covered: named automatic callbacks and extension tool. Alternate paths: manual command, ordinary MCP/CLI/API access and direct file edits. Required external contract: host event/tool execution and configuration provenance. Current configured grants and deployed isolation are unobserved. Implementation conclusion status: wired. Operation conclusion status: uninspected (SRC-1,integrations/pi/extensions/index.ts,integrations/pi/extensions/bm-cli.ts).
return hasProjectMapping() && process.env.BASIC_MEMORY_PI_TRUST_WORKSPACE === "1"; ---

- Bounded retrieval is not bounded total assistant context or semantic safety.
build_contextbounds primary page size and related-result count in the MCP layer and URI API route; compact mode omits observations and source prose in its serialized graph. Pi direct recall instead takes five search hits and clips each excerpt to 500 characters. Neither prevents a host from issuing further reads, retaining past turns or using its own shell. The fenced recall warning asks the assistant to treat retrieved content as data; it does not enforce instruction/data separation inside a model. Owner: retrieval tools, router and extension formatter. Strength: invariant for the inspected output-shaping branch, policy for the warning. Required external contract: host honors tools and controls its own context/compaction. Implementation conclusion status: wired. Operation conclusion status: uninspected (RT-RTE-context-build, RT-BAP-recall-data; SRC-1,src/basic_memory/mcp/tools/build_context.py,src/basic_memory/api/v2/routers/memory_router.py,integrations/pi/extensions/index.ts).
Alternate execution and change admission
get_client prioritizes an injected factory, explicit local/cloud flags, per-project mode, a workspace selector, then local ASGI transport. This makes cloud routing and embedding calls genuine off-host possibilities, not evidence of an air-gapped local deployment. Factory injection is a composition seam for external runtimes, not an inspected agent-created plugin mechanism. The core code does not justify attributing cloud tenant isolation to the local project-directory check (SRC-1, src/basic_memory/mcp/async_client.py, src/basic_memory/mcp/project_context.py).
The included POSIX-named MCP tools are API-client translations, not an arbitrary command shell. Their visibility is configurable by the composition root; hiding that group does not remove canonical note tools or external host shell capability. No host-shell approval guarantee is claimed here (SRC-1, src/basic_memory/mcp/tools/posix_tools.py, src/basic_memory/mcp/server.py).
Six familiar Unix verbs — cat, grep, ls, find, tail, man — each a thin translation over the same typed API clients the canonical tools use. ---
src/basic_memory/mcp/tools/posix_tools.py
Knowledge admission is concrete in the write and checkpoint routes below. Shipped server instructions ask the assistant not to create notes unprompted; they are guidance rather than a service-level requirement for human approval (RT-BAP-server-instructions). The Pi extractive capture loop can perform content-specific writes without per-checkpoint approval once automation is enabled. Its hook-flow alternative uses Python hook adapters, an inbox event write and project checkpoint logic, not the same TypeScript extractive formatter (RT-RTE-hook-checkpoint).
The lifecycle skill prescribes moving completed notes to archives and editing metadata, with recovery by moving back. This is model-facing maintenance guidance, not a shipped autonomous maintenance scheduler established by this inspection. Product/capability/production changes through package installation, release machinery and hook installation remain available but untraced; no autonomous product-update route is established or ruled out. Memory revision semantics beyond this baseline belong to the memory analyst (SRC-1, skills/memory-lifecycle/SKILL.md, src/basic_memory/cli/commands/hook.py).
Added coverage and remaining uncertainty
Beyond the boundary's initial inspection, this report inspected the knowledge client, path-write router, knowledge CRUD router portions, mutation service and runner portions, local materialization provider/pools/recovery, portable file writer and runner, CLI tool/cleanup path, ASGI/cloud client routing, context service and response hydrator, URI context router, POSIX tool declarations, embedding factory/providers, Pi session/CLI helpers and selected hook functions. These are additional implementation anchors under SRC-1, not new sources. Server instructions, source comments and maintenance prescriptions supply doctrine/design; comments about performance regressions or incidents are not independent run evidence.
Other hosts (Claude, Codex, Hermes, OpenClaw, Tau), importers, watcher ingestion, collaboration-relay callers, optional rerankers, full cache policy, schema validation policy, remote workers and evaluators were not comprehensively traced. The relay branch is inspected, but its live collaboration system and storage-version implementation are not. Other host loops must not be inferred from Pi. The partial-loop boundary remains: these limits prevent whole-system admission, isolation, provider enumeration, task-quality and crash-correctness conclusions. Distributed-parametric embedding alternatives are separated below; the enclosing assistant's model/version/parameter updates remain outside the captured host boundary. No observed behavior change or benefit is established.

Label: FastEmbedEmbeddingProvider
Source-native component: local embedding provider. Representational form: distributed-parametric model weights producing dense numerical vectors; model objects are held in process, downloaded artifacts use the configured cache directory. Parameters are used for inference, with no parameter-training operation in the inspected provider. Exact weight revision is not pinned by its constructor: it resolves the configured model name and calls FastEmbed. There is no remote endpoint in this branch; external model resolution/cache replacement can change artifacts across loads. Dependency model-download internals are uninspected. SRC-1, src/basic_memory/repository/fastembed_provider.py, src/basic_memory/repository/embedding_provider_factory.py. This component can serve the write advisory and post-index vector path; provider selection in any deployment is unobserved.

Representational form: distributed-parametric service model returning dense vectors; weights and provider state are opaque/off-host, client object is in process. The inspected adapter requests inference, not parameter updates; provider-internal updates are uninspected. Default model name is text-embedding-3-small, not an immutable weight identity. Configurable base URL and model name allow endpoint resolution to another model; same-name provider changes are not excluded. Routes
RT-RTE-note-write
Label: Path-addressed note write
Endpoints/progression: enclosing human/model caller → MCP tool (or CLI wrapper) → project client → typed HTTP request → path-write router → mutation service/transaction → materialization handoff → formatted outcome. Principal is the caller; project external ID scopes the API and exact file path identifies the current owner. Deterministic Python controls progression. Payloads, identities, checksums and discriminants are symbolic; caller-authored Markdown also carries natural-language content. Storage effects are accepted-note DB state and subsequent file/index work, not direct model parameter changes. SRC-1, src/basic_memory/mcp/tools/write_note.py, src/basic_memory/mcp/clients/knowledge.py, src/basic_memory/api/v2/routers/note_write_router.py, src/basic_memory/services/note_content_writes.py, src/basic_memory/indexing/accepted_note_mutation_runner.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: Created/updated entity or typed conflict/lock/revision refusal, rendered as JSON/text; the post-create semantic advisory is not an admission veto.
- Later read-back: Accepted Markdown can reach later note reads and derived graph/search consumers; this record establishes write plumbing, not complete memory freshness.
- Delegated visibility: API and local worker receive structured mutation state; no sub-agent delegation is established.
- Selection predicate: Exact path owner first; overwrite policy decides replacement; retained permalink candidates detect moved targets when the requested path is vacant.
- Invalidation or expiry: Mutation cache scope and post-accept publication arrange invalidation; accepted content persists until another mutation/delete. Full cache correctness is uninspected.
- Activation or effect: Transaction commits accepted state and queues materialization. Later caller behavior depending on the content is unobserved.
- Evidence limits: Source trace only; database/deployment contracts, all validation branches and actual model compliance are not verified.
Admission: trigger is an open caller request, not a bounded experiment. Caller proposes text and overwrite/checksum options; software accepts/rejects through mutation rules, preparation and the in-transaction hook. Human authorship/approval is unresolved for generic API callers; there is no per-content human approval argument on this inspected request. Expected checksums are revision references, not answer oracles. No expected-answer oracle or improvement-trigger evaluator occurs in this traced write decision. Proposal guidance can come from server instructions, but those do not enforce approval. Rejection leaves mutation transactions; later rollback to an old semantic version is uninspected. Recovery from asynchronous storage failure is the next route. What persists is accepted note content and mutation state, not demonstrated improved capacity.

RT-RTE-note-materialization
Label: Deferred note materialization
Endpoints/progression: accepted change → keyed local worker pool → version preflight → guarded content-store write → status publication → indexing → separate vector pool. Owner is the local materialization provider; identities are project/entity and accepted version, not model-selected tasks. State is symbolic job/status/checksum data plus Markdown bytes; executor effects cross DB/filesystem boundaries and optionally an embedding-provider network boundary. SRC-1, src/basic_memory/index/note_content_materialization.py, src/basic_memory/indexing/note_materialization_runner.py, src/basic_memory/runtime/note_materialization.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: Production accepts/enqueues without waiting for Markdown/index/vector completion; test mode can await inline work.
- Later read-back: Materialized Markdown and derived indexes become available to later reads/search; precise read-source arbitration is left uninspected here.
- Delegated visibility: Worker receives an immutable prepared accepted-note snapshot; optional embedding provider receives indexed text for vector inference, not general agent delegation.
- Selection predicate: Per-note queue routing; preflight claims/checks the current accepted version, and stale jobs may terminate without writing.
- Invalidation or expiry: Version guards retire superseded requests; status publication and indexing invalidate affected reads. Queue state is process-local.
- Activation or effect: Writes permitted file state, publishes written/conflict/failure status and schedules derived work. No measured successful persistence or speedup supplied.
- Evidence limits: Process-local FIFO is not a cross-process lock or a durable queue guarantee. Cloud adapters and all storage atomicity details are uninspected.
Admission/recovery: accepted content is the proposed file change; software preflight and checksum checks veto stale or conflicting writes. No human decision or answer oracle is inserted in this downstream open-operation mode. Runtime guidance is the fixed guarded-write policy. Startup recovery re-drives pending/writing/failed entries; an existing accepted-checksum file returns metadata without rewriting. An external-change conflict remains a conflict, not permission to overwrite arbitrary bytes. Graceful CLI cleanup drains queues; abrupt-exit recovery and external infrastructure remain necessary. The writer check and actual storage write are separate calls, so this is not evidence of an atomic compare-and-swap against arbitrary concurrent filesystem writers.

RT-RTE-context-build
Label: Requested graph context
Endpoints/progression: caller's memory URL/project → MCP resolver/client → URI API → ContextService search and graph traversal → batch entity hydration → GraphContext → text/JSON formatting. Owner: deterministic resolver/service code; caller chooses query, depth and pagination. State/action boundary: project-scoped DB/index reads and in-process response shaping, without a write admission decision. SRC-1, src/basic_memory/mcp/tools/build_context.py, src/basic_memory/api/v2/routers/memory_router.py, src/basic_memory/services/context_service.py, src/basic_memory/api/v2/utils.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: Bounded graph summaries/observations/relations with pagination metadata, or compact graph labels without entity observations/source prose.
- Later read-back: Selects retained indexed knowledge created by earlier writes; this route does not persist a new summary or replace the host's working window.
- Delegated visibility: API hydrator sees entity IDs for response metadata; no isolated model frame or sub-agent result channel is established.
- Selection predicate: Exact normalized permalink or wildcard search, strict link-resolution fallback for an unresolved exact name, relation traversal and page/related limits. Ambiguous identifier becomes an API 409.
- Invalidation or expiry: inapplicable — this read route does not admit a retained revision; freshness depends on separately maintained indexes/cache.
- Activation or effect: Delivers selected context to the caller; interpretation and behavior change are unobserved.
- Evidence limits: Not a complete-note read, not all repository consumers, and not a global model-context budget. Fine-grained traversal SQL/cross-project authorization are not audited.
Working-context control is on-demand selection, not host compaction: removed/unreturned material remains reachable by further note reads and pagination. Compact mode preferentially keeps graph identity/shape and leaves source prose for explicit reads. There is no frame-pop operation established here; the host still owns retention of received output.

RT-RTE-pi-checkpoint
Label: Pi direct capture and recall
Endpoints/progression: Pi session callback or manual command/tool → branch turn extraction → Markdown capture draft → spawned CLI write → later CLI search → selected fenced excerpt → host message/tool result. Extension code owns automatic decisions; host owns scheduling, agent context and subsequent generation. Session/branch IDs hash into a stable default checkpoint title. This record covers direct capture/recall, not Python hook formatting. SRC-1, integrations/pi/extensions/index.ts, integrations/pi/extensions/session.ts, integrations/pi/extensions/bm-cli.ts, src/basic_memory/cli/commands/tool.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: Capture status/notification or formatted search excerpts;
before_agent_startcan return a displayed custom message. - Later read-back: Durable
pi_sessionnotes are searched on a later session's first eligible agent-start callback, or explicit recall. - Delegated visibility: Subprocess gets CLI arguments and draft via stdin; host receives formatted recall. Branch extractor includes user/assistant text, not arbitrary tool-result or hidden-reasoning blocks.
- Selection predicate: Capture requires user content; automatic settled capture also checks minimum text length. Recall searches
pi_sessionafter the configured timeframe using the prompt/query, takes five hits and clips each excerpt to 500 characters. - Invalidation or expiry: Untitled captures use overwrite against a stable session/branch title when IDs exist. Recall timeframe filters eligibility, not deletion. Per-session recall flag resets at session start; it is set before the attempt, so failure need not trigger automatic retry.
- Activation or effect: Writes checkpoint text and delivers reference data to host context; actual use, fidelity and benefit remain unobserved.
- Evidence limits: No Pi host implementation or execution supplied; current trust/config, branch correctness, search ranking/provider behavior and abort cleanup are not experimentally verified.
Admission: trigger is an open host lifecycle event or explicit request. Fixed code proposes an extractive checkpoint from user/assistant text; software writes it, without a model summarization call or per-content human approval. User configuration and manual commands are separate contributions. Automation and model tool capture require the trust predicate; manual commands instead check valid config/project. No answer oracle or capacity-improvement comparison is present. Guidance in the saved note asks later continuation; recall wrapper asks reference-only interpretation. What persists is a working-thread checkpoint, not a validated conclusion. CLI refusal/timeout becomes a notification; an explicit title avoids the default overwrite flag. Prior-content rollback is not established. This is a trace-fed retained-context path, not proof of learning or self-improvement.

RT-RTE-hook-checkpoint
Label: Pi hook-flow checkpoint
Endpoints/progression: configured Pi hook flow → subprocess hook session-start / hook pre-compact → normalized event and harness settings → lifecycle inbox capture → brief or authored checkpoint → common write tool. Owner: extension triggers plus Python hook code. This is not an isolated model task. Host performs compaction; the hook preserves selected durable context around it. SRC-1, integrations/pi/extensions/index.ts, src/basic_memory/cli/commands/hook.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: Session brief (bounded by
MAX_BRIEF_CHARS), Pi captured-checkpoint message, or silent no-op/diagnostic on failure. - Later read-back: Hook-produced checkpoints can enter later profile-specific recall; raw lifecycle inbox capture is distinct from an authored knowledge note and its downstream archive consumption is uninspected here.
- Delegated visibility: Pi pre-compaction callback supplies branch entries; Python Pi mode uses payload turns, while other harness branches may read transcript files. Full adapter transformations are uninspected.
- Selection predicate: Primary project required for a checkpoint, usable conversation and at least one user turn required; harness/profile chooses note type. Pi extension automatic invocation additionally requires trusted workspace/config.
- Invalidation or expiry: Pi checkpoint write requests overwrite; normal common-path invalidation applies. Hook archive retention/expiry is uninspected.
- Activation or effect: Fixed code can save a checkpoint before host compaction or at settled events and emit a session brief. Actual preservation/reintroduction after compaction remains unobserved.
- Evidence limits: Selected hook bodies only; not complete cross-harness capture, inbox/archive, brief search or host compaction correctness.
Admission: lifecycle event supplies candidate trace data; fixed _checkpoint_note formatting and common write admission decide persistence. No per-content human approval is introduced here. Open-operation mode, with no answer oracle or measured improvement trigger. The primary-project gate can reject checkpointing, but lifecycle capture is attempted before checkpoint gates. Fail-open wrapper catches Exception/SystemExit and logs to stderr rather than intentionally blocking a host session; KeyboardInterrupt is not caught. Checkpoint write errors are reported as best effort. Recovery/rollback of previous checkpoint content is uninspected. This route establishes no model-formulated criticism loop.
Capture before the checkpoint gates: capture is dumb, and an unmapped or
transcript-less session is still trace worth keeping in the WAL.
