Synapptic epistemic report
Type: agentic-system-analyses/types/agentic-system-epistemic-report.md
Source-and-claim boundary
The question is how Synapptic turns session material into claims about a user or assistant, licenses preventive instructions, and changes later reliance. The whole-system scope and exclusions are those of the boundary; evidence identities are in its Source register. SRC-1 supplies implementation and doctrine/design, not observed runs or causal experiments. No target code, tests, examples or services were executed.
The assessed routes acquire selected transcript content, generate observations and guards, accumulate profiles, generate narratives, publish them, test guard compliance and withdraw synthesis eligibility. External host instruction loading and model internals remain outside the captured implementation. Model-produced claims have unknown source warrant: a user correction is evidence that a correction was uttered, not independent proof of the underlying technical diagnosis. Guards themselves are prescriptions; their associated failure diagnoses and claims that the prescription prevents recurrence are truth-apt. No universal semantic-preservation claim is made for the model transformations.
Consequential claims are EPI-CLM-background-learning, EPI-CLM-individual-impact, EPI-CLM-failure-grounding, and RT-CLM-target-filtering. They are compared separately, not combined into a system-wide warrant score.

|---|---|---|
ingest, extract, merge |
src/synapptic/cli.py; src/synapptic/filter.py; src/synapptic/extract.py; src/synapptic/profile.py |
Direct extraction/profile reads plus supplied RT-RTE-ingest-profile for driver/filter/state details; generation, admission and curation parts below. Filter/scrubber details were not independently re-audited here; no complete semantic preservation or privacy conclusion. |
| Patterns/configuration | src/synapptic/bundle/patterns/default/prompt.md; src/synapptic/config.py; src/synapptic/patterns.py |
Default prompt and constants read directly; overrides supplied by RT-OBJ-pattern-prompt. Custom prompt contents are user-dependent, not frozen generated instances. |
synthesize, publication writers |
src/synapptic/synthesize.py; src/synapptic/integrate.py; src/synapptic/outputs.py |
Synthesis read directly; integration/writer findings supplied by RT-RTE-publish-archetypes, RT-BAP-archetype-host. No external host loading or compliance evidence. |
| Installed SessionEnd hook | src/synapptic/bundle/hooks/synapptic-session-end.sh |
Supplied RT-RTE-session-hook: internal updates but no integration call. No host delivery trace. |
benchmark --no-batch, default batch, case generation/cache, scoring, feedback |
src/synapptic/benchmark.py; src/synapptic/cli.py |
Direct reads of generation/fidelity/cache, per-guard setup and scoring, batch prompts/judging/aggregation, verdict/exclusion/include functions and CLI feedback dispatch. EPI-RTE-benchmark-judgment, EPI-RTE-benchmark-disposition, supplied RT-RTE-benchmark-feedback. No benchmark execution artifact. |
guards include, rollback, reset, diff, result queries |
src/synapptic/benchmark.py; src/synapptic/cli.py; src/synapptic/benchmark_results.py |
Direct include/exclude, rollback/reset dispatch and result-query reads; EPI-RTE-withdrawal-recovery. Result comparison reads latest summaries, not a matched causal experiment. reset_all internals not inspected here; no complete published-output erasure conclusion. |
| Providers, tool launch, relay forwarding | src/synapptic/providers.py; src/synapptic/relay/routers/anthropic.py; src/synapptic/relay/routers/openai.py |
Supplied RT-CMP-call-llm, RT-RTE-relay-forwarding. Distinguish internal text inference from unrestricted host request forwarding. No relay-to-profile acceptance route established by those records. |
| Relay index/browser/dashboard, tokens/stats, tests | src/synapptic/relay/; tests/; src/synapptic/cli.py |
Supplied boundary/runtime coverage only. Raw transcript browsing and reported metrics are not evaluated here as semantic truth checks. Index/parser/measurement internals and full test suite remain uninspected by this analyst; this prevents a system-complete negative about all truth-apt transformations, metrics accuracy or evaluator coverage. |
Missing real transcript/profile histories prevent conclusions about actual observations, diagnoses or narrative fidelity. Missing benchmark traces prevent any observed guard-effect conclusion. Missing host execution prevents activation and benefit claims. Opaque inference internals prevent parameter-learning assessments; absence of parameter updates in client requests is not proof that provider state cannot change. Accessible but unread relay and test details are inspection limits, not access gaps or evidenced absences.

Bounded conclusion
Synapptic acquires selected session text and produces candidate user/failure claims and preventive instructions. In the inspected generation paths, factual entailment and semantic preservation are indeterminate; prompt requests alone do not distinguish faithful import, reshaping and conjecture. Model fluency and confidence are not acceptance evidence. The syntax gate admits usable objects, not verified diagnoses. See EPI-RTE-extract-candidates and EPI-RTE-observation-admission.
Profile weight, repeated matching, age and cross-project presence determine operational reliance. They do not establish independent corroboration or universal scope. Literal evidence can remain in raw observation files while disappearing from constructed profile entries; session IDs preserve only coarse lineage. Selection can put an item into a future extraction prompt as already established, even though no truth check occurred. Saved narratives and published imperatives extend this reliance into a conditional external-host instruction channel; they do not establish acceptance or host compliance. See EPI-RTE-profile-curation, EPI-RTE-narrative-inputs, RT-RTE-publish-archetypes and RT-BAP-archetype-host.
The benchmark is a consequential evaluator, not mere reporting. It judges textual rule compliance, derives comparison categories and can change later synthesis eligibility. Its criterion is scored compliance under generated scenarios for the configured model, not factual accuracy of a diagnosis or successful coding work. The whole-profile default, truncated judging, permissive result handling and stale-cache possibilities bound this license. Per-guard mode offers a narrower contrast but does not by itself identify a reliable isolated component effect. Automatic model verdicts and human global exclusions have different admission owners and neither immediately retracts published text. See EPI-RTE-benchmark-judgment, EPI-RTE-benchmark-disposition, RT-RTE-benchmark-feedback and EPI-RTE-withdrawal-recovery.
The inspected code entails bounded numerical and classification results from its inputs, but warrants no source truth beyond them. No accepted ampliative claim or post-acceptance lifecycle integration is established in these routes. This is not a claim that the whole repository contains no such route: relay metrics/parser and full test coverage remain unassessed. Distributed-parametric inference is externally supplied; accessible clients do not establish its internal learning or epistemic checks. See RT-CMP-call-llm.
Learning as improved future capacity remains unestablished independently of trace-fed update wiring. Reflection over the host-plus-Synapptic boundary has a representational return path, but changed host behavior is unobserved. The supplied RT-RTE-publish-archetypes keeps theory-builder conditions separate: localized guidance and later consumption are afforded, content-directed criticism is uninspected, and feedback iteration is afforded rather than demonstrated. Compliance scores do not add a demonstrated criticism locating blame in theory, test, data or auxiliaries. Neither autonomous nor reflective theory building follows. For self-improvement toward fewer recurrent coding failures across future host sessions, the retained update pathway is dispositional; later live behavioral dependence and successful improvement remain unestablished. No one of these limits erases the independently implemented retention, selection or feedback routes.

EPI-OBJ-observations
Label: Extracted observation candidates
Part of: RT-RTE-ingest-profile
This is the content object inside that route, not a replacement for its driver identity. Source-native identity: observation dictionaries returned by extract_observations. Natural-language observation/evidence strings are interpreted by models or people; symbolic dimension, confidence, session and time fields are interpreted by code. Substrate: returned Python list, then session JSON through the parent route. SRC-1, src/synapptic/extract.py. Distinct from the supplied pattern prompt: these are generated claims/prescriptions, not the instructions requesting them. New profile entries do not carry the evidence field into the profile; see EPI-OBJ-profile-text.

EPI-OBJ-profile-text
Label: Weighted profile observation text
Part of: RT-RTE-ingest-profile
An operative output part of the parent route, not another ingest route. Source-native identity: dimensions[*][*].observation; natural-language statements and rules in profile dictionaries persisted as YAML by the supplied parent. Different from raw candidates because merge can replace wording and does not copy their evidence strings into new entries. Read by subsequent extraction/synthesis. SRC-1, src/synapptic/profile.py.

Part of: RT-RTE-ingest-profile
Symbolic fields attached to the parent route's persisted profile entries, not the natural-language wording part. Source-native identity: weight, evidence_count, sources, projects, excluded, model_verdicts. Substrate: profile dictionaries/YAML; exact field consumers in merge, extraction summary and narrative filtering. Verdict/exclusion updates also overlap RT-RTE-benchmark-feedback, which is their update route, not a duplicate object. Label: Narrative archetype
Part of: RT-RTE-publish-archetypes
The natural-language output part of the parent publication route: user narrative, numbered guards, reasons and known weaknesses. Source-native identity: narrative returned by synthesize_archetype, stored as Markdown and reloaded for integration/benchmarking. Unlike EPI-OBJ-profile-text, wording is newly generated and need not retain one-to-one observation identity. No actual generated artifact was supplied. SRC-1, src/synapptic/synthesize.py; persistence/publication passages and consumer boundaries are supplied by the parent route.

Label: Generated benchmark cases
Part of: RT-RTE-benchmark-feedback
Case objects inside the supplied benchmark route, distinct from its scores and persisted guard metadata. Source-native identity: test-case dictionaries containing rule/scenario/category and optional tension. Natural-language scenario/rule content plus symbolic indexing/category; substrate: Python lists and versioned JSON caches. Hypothetical scenarios are not evidence that an original failure occurred. Part of: RT-RTE-benchmark-feedback
The evaluator-output part of the parent route, not another benchmark route. Source-native identity: verdict dictionaries, scores, test classifications and summary fields. Natural-language reasons/responses plus symbolic labels/counts; substrate: Python dictionaries, benchmark JSON and mapped profile verdict fields. Direct result queries read saved summaries without matching experimental conditions. SRC-1, src/synapptic/benchmark.py; src/synapptic/benchmark_results.py. Separate from cases because evaluator visibility, failure handling and feedback consumers differ.

Routes
EPI-RTE-extract-candidates
Label: Model observation proposal
Part of: RT-RTE-ingest-profile
Endpoints: filtered transcript and optional profile summary to model-returned observation text. Code builds context and calls the configured model; model owns proposed wording. This is the candidate-producing part, distinct from admission and deterministic profile curation. Guidance asks for specific transcript support, failure identification and preventive rules; guidance persists as the pattern, proposals as session observations. Open transcript analysis; no reference answer oracle or human per-item approval. SRC-1, src/synapptic/extract.py; src/synapptic/bundle/patterns/default/prompt.md.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: Raw model response, later parsed by the admission part.
- Later read-back: Admitted observations persist and feed merge; selected profile entries can enter later extraction as already established context.
- Delegated visibility: Filtered/scrubbed turns, active dimensions, extraction focus and high-weight profile summary; no independent source investigation tools.
- Selection predicate: Parent driver supplies turns; summary selects weight at least 0.7, at most eight entries per dimension.
- Invalidation or expiry: Parent selection can skip processed sessions; explicit extraction can repropose content; no automatic semantic invalidation result.
- Activation or effect: Candidate generation is wired; grounded observations or improved extraction unobserved.
- Evidence limits: Missing generated objects prevents classifying each edge as paraphrase, entailed diagnosis or ampliative conjecture. Explicit request for novelty is not evidence of non-entailment.
- Must be supported by specific evidence from the transcript ---

EPI-RTE-observation-admission
Label: Observation shape gate and admission
Part of: RT-RTE-ingest-profile
Endpoints: raw model string to returned enriched observation list. Code extracts JSON, requires an array, drops nondictionaries, unknown dimensions and missing observation values; then defaults confidence and attaches session/time. The model proposes; software decides; user has no per-candidate veto in this path. Criterion is usable shape, not evidence support, confidence calibration or factual truth. Rejection occurs before merge; provider/parse failure returns an empty list. This is distinct from proposal and weighted selection. SRC-1, src/synapptic/extract.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: Valid list, possibly empty; no separate epistemic acceptance record.
- Later read-back: Parent stores returned observations and treats a saved session file as processed, even for an empty list.
- Delegated visibility: inapplicable — this gate is deterministic local code, not another model call.
- Selection predicate: JSON list, dictionary member, registered dimension and truthy observation; evidence is not required.
- Invalidation or expiry: Parse failure loses this proposal attempt; explicit re-extraction is available through parent. There is no evidence-fidelity rejection state.
- Activation or effect: Operational admission and rejection wired; true claims not thereby established.
- Evidence limits: Gate does not enforce active-mode dimensions beyond membership in global DIMENSIONS, nor validate confidence bounds or evidence quotation.

src/synapptic/extract.py
The full inspected loop supplies the bounded negative about absent evidence checking; the passage shows the transition to enrichment without an evidence requirement. Recovery and physical persistence belong to the parent route rather than this gate.
EPI-RTE-profile-curation
Label: Weighted matching, decay and promotion
Part of: RT-RTE-ingest-profile
Endpoints: existing profile and routed observations to updated profile/global promotion candidates. Software owns matching, decay, confidence blending, pruning, sort order and promotion. Matching uses lowercased SequenceMatcher threshold 0.7; matching observations increment evidence count, can replace text if longer, and retain at most ten source sessions. Cross-project candidates use similarity 0.6 and two-project eligibility. No semantic contradiction adjudicator or reference outcome enters these inspected functions. Admission is computational after the model proposal; starting merge is not human endorsement of each claim. Low weights are removed from dimensions despite the archival wording; history recovery is separate. SRC-1, src/synapptic/profile.py; src/synapptic/config.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: Updated profile dictionary and separate list of promotion observations.
- Later read-back: Parent saves profiles; synthesis and future extraction consume selected entries; global promotion broadens future routing scope.
- Delegated visibility: inapplicable — pure Python transformation with no model judge.
- Selection predicate: Dimension, text similarity, supplied confidence, merge/time decay and minimum weight; promotion uses distinct project set size.
- Invalidation or expiry: Decay/pruning removes entries below threshold; longer matching text replaces wording; source list caps lineage. None is a recorded falsification.
- Activation or effect: Changes eligibility/ranking and text available to later models; successful correction or improved model behavior unobserved.
- Evidence limits: Similarity does not prove equivalent meaning; source/session counts do not establish independent support; guards remain prescriptions with untested preventive claims.

src/synapptic/profile.py
Concrete implementation deduction, not target execution: start from an empty profile and give two identical communication observations, both Use short answers, confidence 0.8, same session s, same timestamp. First creates count 1/source [s]; second is an exact match and increments count to 2 while the unique-source list stays [s]. Weight stays 0.8 under the blend. Thus evidence_count need not count independent sessions. The non-guard narrative filter actually needs only count 1 and weight 0.3, not the printed diagnostic's count 2. No external source truth is inferred from this arithmetic.

EPI-RTE-narrative-inputs
Label: Narrative eligibility filter
Part of: RT-RTE-publish-archetypes
Endpoints: profile and optional target-model name to filtered profile YAML passed to synthesis. This is the deterministic selection part, not prose generation. Code decides eligibility; global exclusion always applies, model redundant/backfire applies only when target_model is supplied. Guards/ai_failures need weight 0.5; other dimensions use weight 0.3 and evidence_count 1 from constants. The user can request a target, but does not approve individual surviving claims. Recovery: include flags or alter profile, then regenerate; software does not reinstate truth by doing so. SRC-1, src/synapptic/synthesize.py; src/synapptic/config.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: Filtered dimensions dictionary, then YAML input to the synthesis model.
- Later read-back: Resulting narrative can be saved/reloaded through parent; filtering itself does not persist a new acceptance artifact.
- Delegated visibility: Synthesis model receives only eligible entries, not raw transcripts or excluded entries.
- Selection predicate: Global exclusion, optional target-model verdict, weight threshold and for nonprescriptive dimensions minimum evidence count.
- Invalidation or expiry: Changes to weights/flags affect later synthesis only; existing narratives are not automatically invalidated.
- Activation or effect: Source eligibility enforced in synthesis; narrative grounding and target-specific publication compliance not established.
- Evidence limits: Printed suggestion of two-session evidence disagrees with constant value 1. Runtime's general threshold account remains valid; no supersession needed.

EPI-RTE-benchmark-judgment
Label: Benchmark fidelity and compliance evaluators
Part of: RT-RTE-benchmark-feedback
The evidence-producing part of that route, not its retention or withdrawal decisions. Code selects guards and asks a model to generate scenarios; lexical fidelity drops rules whose best match against intended guards is below 0.5. That checks surface identity, not scenario adversarialness, technical truth or preventive effect. Generator output is model-proposed; code vetoes cases; optional separate judge is user configured. Same-model judging is allowed. Operating mode is synthetic controlled prompting, not a real task outcome oracle. Fixed controls encode expected language/code behavior, not externally verified outcomes for ordinary cases. SRC-1, src/synapptic/benchmark.py; src/synapptic/cli.py.
Per-guard mode's target is rule compliance of response snippets under full archetype versus archetype with a heuristic matching block removed (or guard added if absent, per parent). _response_prompt tells the respondent not to follow embedded profile instructions. Batch mode's target is short-response compliance under full profile versus no profile. Batch instructions limit replies to 1–2 plain-text sentences with no code; this also interacts with the code-prohibition control's expected violation. Judges receive first 2000 characters per-guard, first 300 batch. A judgment is not warranted beyond that visible target. No observed response demonstrates actual compliance.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: Case fidelity survivors and parsed compliance labels/reasons; UNKNOWN or failed arrays on some failures.
- Later read-back: Cached cases are reused; result labels persist through parent and change profile verdicts via disposition/feedback.
- Delegated visibility: Respondent sees scenario and treatment; judge sees rule and truncated response, not source transcript, live tools, hidden continuation or real task outcome.
- Selection predicate: Selected nonexcluded guards; generated or cached cases; fidelity threshold; mode-specific treatment and parser behavior.
- Invalidation or expiry: Explicit refresh/cache flush; per-guard cache uses model and guard hash, batch cache call uses only project/seed. A profile/model change need not invalidate batch cases.
- Activation or effect: Parsed judgments feed operative classifications; judge accuracy and guard benefit unobserved.
- Evidence limits: Truncation, same-model evaluation, similarity-based treatment removal, session reuse, case/cache validity and batch position handling limit attribution. Controls do not establish general judge reliability.

Counterexample to stable batch identity: inspected scatter fills only returned chunk verdicts, then the quoted compaction removes missing entries. If an early chunk lacks verdicts but a later chunk succeeds, the later label can occupy the earlier test's positional index in aggregation. This is an implementation-supported conditional defect, not an observed misassignment. It further prevents treating every saved per-rule verdict as reliably attached to the judged response. No correction to the parent route's valid general account is required; this adds an evaluator-specific limit.
EPI-RTE-benchmark-disposition
Label: Compliance comparison classification
Part of: RT-RTE-benchmark-feedback
The classification/admission part, separate from model judging. Code consumes labels and decides categories; no human approval gates category creation. Per-guard mode majority-votes valid labels with tie/UNKNOWN handling. Batch mode uses strict majority over retained runs; missing/non-COMPLY positions count against passing, ties fail. With multiple valid runs, zero passes in both arms is labeled untestable rather than ineffective. These classifications are deterministic deductions under program conventions, not established causal prevention/regression. They license intended use as guard eligibility feedback for the configured model, not diagnosis truth or transfer to other models. SRC-1, src/synapptic/benchmark.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: Test classifications, scores and summaries; per-guard mode also warning/control health fields.
- Later read-back: Parent persists result JSON and records non-unclear/non-untestable classifications into model_verdicts; later target-model synthesis can consume them.
- Delegated visibility: inapplicable — deterministic aggregation; underlying labels come from the separate model evaluator.
- Selection predicate: Per-mode pass/vote rules and valid-run definitions. Feedback skips unclear/untestable; human global exclusions are separately offered for redundant/backfire.
- Invalidation or expiry: Later feedback can overwrite verdicts; cache refresh affects future tests. Control failure warnings do not automatically veto per-guard results or feedback writes.
- Activation or effect: Categories grant operational force through parent verdict/exclusion updates; epistemic license remains conditional on evaluator input validity and experimental domain.
- Evidence limits: No supplied artifact shows categories operated, measured an individual effect or improved future capacity. Batch grouping and position issues persist into feedback.

src/synapptic/benchmark.py
Concrete deduction: for one batch test with three retained runs, three COMPLY labels in WITH and zero in WITHOUT produce PASS/FAIL and effective; the zero-both branch does not apply. That result follows from the labels and program convention even if the treatment was the entire profile, so its label does not entail individual guard causality. For zero passes in both arms with three runs, the implementation chooses untestable; rejection of that classification from model_verdict writes therefore does not mean every judged noncompliance becomes an ineffective verdict.
EPI-RTE-withdrawal-recovery
Label: Re-inclusion and global profile recovery
Compared with RT-RTE-benchmark-feedback, this route adds the inverse user command and detached global rollback rather than another evaluator. Compared with RT-RTE-ingest-profile, it restores previous stored content without proposing observations. No single parent contains both operations. User invokes include indices or rollback; code chooses indexed excluded entries or second newest global history file. It has no answer oracle or content judgment. reset dispatch is inspected but complete reset_all deletion internals are not assessed. SRC-1, src/synapptic/benchmark.py; src/synapptic/cli.py.
- implementation conclusion status: wired
- operation conclusion status: uninspected
- Immediate return: Include count/saved profile or copied historical global profile and CLI messages.
- Later read-back: Subsequent synthesis reads restored eligibility/content; published narratives are separate retained artifacts and are not regenerated by these commands.
- Delegated visibility: inapplicable — local user-commanded file/field operations, no model call.
- Selection predicate: Valid indices into excluded guards/ai_failures; rollback requires at least two global history entries and selects history[1].
- Invalidation or expiry: Include deletes excluded only; model_verdicts remain, so target-model filtering may still exclude the item. Rollback does not restore project profiles or already-published outputs.
- Activation or effect: Local reliance controls can be restored; no direct host-policy reversal or evidence of improved outcomes.
- Evidence limits: History provenance and downstream freshness not validated here; no deployment trace demonstrates successful recovery. Rollback is not an epistemic acceptance decision.

EPI-CLM-background-learning
Label: Background learning and smarter sessions
Claimed operation: background session processing learns and improves the next session. SRC-1, README.md, doctrine/design. Distinct from RT-CLM-target-filtering: this asserts improvement rather than delivery filtering. Candidate update/retention wiring in RT-RTE-session-hook does not establish host activation or benefit; omission of integration is a concrete countercase to automatic refreshed outputs.
That's it. From now on, every session ends with synapptic quietly learning in the background. The next session starts smarter. ---

EPI-CLM-individual-impact
Label: Individual guard isolation and effect
Claimed operation/warrant: WITH/WITHOUT testing isolates each guard; classifications mean prevention or worsening. SRC-1, README.md, doctrine/design. Distinct from supplied publication-filter claim. Implementation supports a conditional per-guard contrast and a different default batch contrast, not unqualified individual attribution or demonstrated task improvement.
This isolates each guard's individual contribution. LLM-as-judge scores both responses, 3 runs per test with majority vote. ---
README.mdEffective means the guard prevented a violation the baseline would have made. Redundant means the AI follows the rule naturally. Backfire means the guard made behavior worse. Two internal controls (COMPLY + VIOLATE) verify the judge isn't biased. ---

EPI-CLM-failure-grounding
Label: Failure-grounded guards requirement
Claimed operation: guard guidance must be grounded in specific observed failures/corrections. SRC-1, src/synapptic/synthesize.py, doctrine/design. This is a generation contract, not proof that generated outputs satisfy it. Distinct from RT-CLM-target-filtering: grounds claimed content rather than target-specific selection.
- Each guard must trace to a specific observed failure or user correction ---
